I could just be out of touch since even the old BG character creator was fine by me but I remember Larian joking about how basic people were in EA character creation so I just assumed not caring was the norm.

There is a game, and there is marketing. In this polish interview Swen admitted, that "core RPG players" weren't, what surprised him, main customers. That's why marketing is aimed toward different people.
