I hate romances in RPGs, don't get me wrong, absolutely terrible.

But we've all succumbed to Drow porn at some point. We're in a BG thread, we can at least all come clean on that. In fact I'll throw the gauntlet down and say if you haven't then you don't belong on this site to begin with.

You will be executed come the fourth dawn.

Because I cannot pick up the axe nor possess the swing through potential I will ask fantadomat to do it for me. Your organs will be distributed evenly among the boomer Codexers and your skull shaped into a coffee mug.

Seriously now, those of you excited at this BG3 reveal, are you excited about anything other than TB 5E?
I am not even excited at 5E or any other DnD, TBH. DnD is pretty crap and even good PnP system is going to be pretty crap for cRPG.
But here's the thing:
Whatever Larian has ever done awesomely right was system agnostic.
Whatever Larian has ever done horribly wrong was (their) system specific.
The good thing about it being DnD 5E (or any DnD apart from 4E) is that it will prevent Larian from going full retard with their RPG systems, but won't prevent them from implementing their hallmark system-agnostic interactivity for great incline.
:incline:
Larian game without stupid amounts of bloat and cooldowns? Count me in.

Agreed. Whether I like this game or not, it will go on to influence the future of the genre.
Which is overdue after BG fucked the genre for over two decades straight.

Hmm, so irresistible Viconia that many, many boys around here have a hard on for was actually written by a gay man?

He also role-played as her on the forums one time.

Gaider is the "seduces straight guys through female npcs" type DM. :)
Someone needs to make a porny Viconia gif that suddenly flashes Gaider's photo at the end.

Please elaborate. I'm new around here, so I don't know how and why BG fucked the genre for over two decades straight.

Well, then the culprit is Diablo, leave poor Baldur's Gate alone
Diablo was secretly RtWP all this time, folks.
It's not rtwp, but it's one of the most successful rpg ever. You can't really believe its combat system didn't influence every single rpg released shortly after. Well, you can, but you would be wrong.

I mean, fucking D:OS 2 influenced Deadfire with its voice over and you think Diablo didn't influence Baldur's Gate?

Apparently, the main reason that Baldur's Gate has RTwP combat is because of the huge success of Diablo in 1997. A player can't control an entire party in real time, so Bioware adopted a RTwP system.

Some trivia: Diablo was being developed as a turn-based game, but the developers eventually changed it to real time game. Thus a cash cow was born.

Some trivia: Diablo was being developed as a turn-based game
This is a myth I see constantly and it refuses to die. They never developed Diablo as a turn-based game, it was suggested for it to be TB in design documents, but someone (publishers?) said no and they went with real time.

Apparently it was actually changed during development, just rather early.

Brevik also remembers that the decision to make Diablo real-time, rather than turn-based, as a controversial one. He said that, despite rumors to the contrary, it's not true that when Condor first pitched the game as a turn-based game, Blizzard said it was great -- but that it had to be real-time and multiplayer. That came later, after development of the game had begun in earnest.

I haven't succumbed to that shit spider boy. Matter of fact I squish spiders wherever I see them. Kinda recall one looking just like you. A relative maybe? I don't know. Y'all look the same to me.
Anyway go skitter in some of the other dark corners of the internet.

Yep, that's correct. David Craddock in the Beneath a Starless Sky brings it up explicitly.
We all played so much WarCraft, StarCraft, and Diablo that I'm sure Baldur’s Gate would have come out several months earlier without [the team spending so much time on] those games," Ohlen admitted, laughing.

WarCraft developer Blizzard Entertainment and Diablo developer Blizzard North had collectively garnered a reputation for accessibility. Their games were designed so that anyone, even a newcomer to computers, could take up a mouse and understand how to play within seconds. Every action in Diablo could be performed with a mouse.
Ohlen and Ray Muzyka butted heads over combat in Baldur’s Gate. Muzyka loved the Gold Box games because they had been predicated on turn-based combat, just like Dungeons & Dragons tabletop games. Turn-based systems allowed players to think through their moves before taking action. Ohlen appreciated the classics, but insisted that turn-based play was outmoded. Real-time strategy titles such as WarCraft II and Diablo proved that the future of gaming lay in fast, think-on-your-feet tactics.

They reached a compromise. Baldur’s Gate would play out in real-time, but players could pause the action during fights to take stock of their situation and queue up orders for their party to carry out when the action resumed. "You got the finer control of turn-based, but at the same time, you got the kind of exciting action of a real-time [strategy game]," Ohlen said.

this thread has rapidly degenerated into biodrone territory
well it is continuation of the bioware's finest franchise,it is only natural.

I wasn’t under the impression until now that codexers played BG2 for the romances or thought they were something other than cancer
Once more, there is only one good romance in BG2 and that is...
The de'Arnise Romance mod.
Still no ToB component though. :negative:
Really is it any good? I dabbled with some NPC mods for my latest BG2 playthrough and found them to be universally awful.

After Diablo 1 came out, there was pressure on Tim Cain to make Fallout also real time and make it more like Diablo.

He's a spider... on the web...

That web is a large one. Hence the corner switch advice.
