Well if a kid wants to imitate a character it's probably a visually pleasing and a strong archetype/character, kids are honest about that stuff, you can't make a kid love some tranny or feminine hero instead of Phantom or Batman.

I can already picture the socially awkward pubescent boys who will practice this expression in front of the mirror.

Are they really the target audience of BG3? Are drow even considered cool among the kids nowadays? I'm asking because I really don't know.
I really don't know either. But I hope Mike Mearls knows :)

I agree with the sentiment that we need more AAA RPGs, but in case you didn't notice, Larian is NOT AAA. DOS II is NOT an AAA game, and neither will be BG3.

Yep. DOS2 is not AAA, it doesn't have lootboxes :P, anyway, we have AAA RPG's To name few.
  • Diablo 3 where even your minions, spells and unarmed attacks scale with the size and sharpness of your axe
  • WoW
  • Fallout 76
  • Anthem
  • Dragon Age Inquisition
  • Elder scrolls blades
  • Mass Effect Andromeda
  • (...)
Anyway, Larian has 350 employees. About the same number of Valve employees. And the reason to why AAA RPG's sucks is because they needs to appeal not to the "average" gamer, but to the lowest common denominator. It applies outside of RPG too. EA was concerned that maybe the FPS players will not recognize WW1 and BF1 was the first BF to sell more than Children's Online Daycare.

-------------------------

I don't care much about production values. Be able to do cool stuff and be immersed is much more important than having a amazing animation and realistic models. BG3 even if is not AAA, looks way better than most AAA games. Seriously, just compare the visuals of BG3 demo with the Mass effect andromeda and the recent BUGThesda games.

I really doubt anyone below the age of 30 thinks edgy purple elves are cool today.

What about above that age? I can't really imagine them being in vogue there either. Anyway, the game's success doesn't hang on that.

Keep dreaming but the reality is that 5e is the most popular PNP RPG ever.

WotC habitually dismisses the entire history of TSR when claiming best-selling status for their latest version of D&D. Certainly, "5th edition D&D" has enjoyed far greater commercial success than the hideous blunder that was "4th edition" (a low bar to cross), and it might even have surpassed the earlier WotC versions "3rd edition" and "3.5" combined, but D&D currently has nothing like the popularity it enjoyed during its zenith in the 1980s.

Why does this thread attract so many posters with terrible English? Really makes you think.

When I read Lilura 50-70 pages back, that was decent stuff. Delicious even I would say.

If you cant survive below a certain level in the underdark, how do drow/duergar gain their first level ups?

They claim they were racially opressed and got those first levels for free, cause now every moll in the Underdark has those unlocked on shelves.

I don't think you virgins got the message yet; BGIII and what Larian decides to do IS the new D&D lore, approved by WOTC.

like Menzoberranzan and Gracklstugh

Those names sound too Europe-White centric! I guess, in the light of today's events WotC will reshuffle lore completely, and will add MORE BLACK culture to black elves (lol elf-alv is literally mean white in european nation's myths), so expect Menzoberranzan to be renamed into somethign liek Zimbabve or Fentanyltown.
Sounds like a joke but remember this - it is not.

first picture is much better

Ypu don't understand people.
THe point is not first is ugly or on the contrary - the point is she is white.
ANd when fntanyl shit hit the fan I literally said - now probaly bitches at Larian ferosiously invent black character and try to shove it in the plot.

I think the first 6-7 books of Salvatore's Drizzt adventures can still make a drow fan out of anyone.

I have read only Douglas Niles "Darkwalker on Moonshae" - was cool when I was 13. Doubt Salvatore any better - all these series that has dozens of books always is a wastepaper.

When a D&D book is announced and go in number one of amazon book for a week or more is easy to understand that is not PR stunt

I'm pretty sure BG3 has AAA production values. It looks like DA:I and DA:I is definitely AAA.

Dragon Age Inquisition was AAA 6 years ago..... And keep in mind by the end of 2020 BG3 will still be in EARLY ACCESS, so the final release date is far, far away. You can't tell me that a game that resembles somewhat an AAA game from a decade ago, is AAA.... I mean, even ATOM RPG looks leaps and bounds better than the original Fallout, does that make it AAA today? Dude, quality standards advance with the time...

https://gamingbolt.com/baldurs-gate-3-has-a-triple-a-budget-and-team-says-developer

The game has the budget and budget is what makes it AAA. Its ugly due to bad art direction but that doesnt matter.
You could argue its indie(pendent) due to being self published (as Larian is not a normal publisher) which would make it triple I but noone uses that terminology.

1) AAA games don't Early Access. These things are mutually exclusive. If your company feels the need to early access a game, then that game cannot possibly be AAA, because AAA means it has the budget to be developed without having to ask for players to buy it as it is being developed.

2) Just because he said so, doesn't make it true. People lie, especially to market products. Shocking, i know. Hard to imagine a world where people lie to sell products, i mean don't their moms punish them for lying when they return from school?

Give us some official budget numbers, then we will talk.

DAI was nearly six years ago, so I'd drop an A.
But DA:I wasn't an "isometric" RPG. Had they dropped the face to face conversations, nobody would've argued it wasn't AAA. Larian have 350 employees, that's pretty AAA, Swen just knows how to keep costs down by hiring mudbrick bakers from Somalia.

AAA game industry, as any corporate industry, is ridden with corruption and budget bloat mechanisms - AAA marketing costs being one of those that are clear even to an outsiders eye. Without suits and corporate overlords the project budget can be WAY less than what EA or Activision needs and still produce same or better results.

1) AAA games don't Early Access

Yep. They are always bugged... You can criticize OwlCat all day, at least they fixed Kingmaker bugs faster than Bugthesda with fallout 76. Just kidding. Anyway, AAA games has it. They just don't call it "early access" i played BF1 far before the launch. And the unique map on beta was Sinai Desert.

Dragon Age Inquisition was AAA 6 years ago..... And keep in mind by the end of 2020 BG3 will still be in EARLY ACCESS, so the final release date is far, far away. Compare with Mass effect Andromeda then(3 years). Or Anthem.

And note : Action based RPG's always sells more than more tactical. I don't like Larian or DOS2 but the success that they did with DOS2 is pretty impressive. Cyberpunk 2077 will probably be the unique decent AAA RPG of the last decades. Why? Because CD projekt red seems to be focusing more on immersion and freedom, not on balance and accessibility.

My guess as to why this game has EA is because Larian manage to polish EA areas to a mirror shine content-wise due to bug reports and so much free testing (it also cuts down on QA costs). That helps them with sales and reviews because most people don't finish RPGs.

And then a year later comes a Definitive edition and all your save files are incompatible

At least it's not developed by Atlus. Then it'd come after 3 years, all save files would be incompatible and it'd cost $60 with DLC on top. This is your brain on boomer Jap devs.

Nah ATOM is not a AAA game because it is a good game. You can't have triple Ass and a good game at the same time.

AAA requires high budget. High budget requires appeal to the lowest common denominator to be economic viable. Appealing to the lowest common denominator means that the game can't have any depth and Teletubbies should be able to play it. This is the rule for 99% of AAA games. You don't have the newest autocad version with less features than the previous one. But you have Skyrim with less spells and weapon types, no attributes, etc; compared to Morrowind for eg.

So, i an not expecting that BG3 will be great as BG2. Nobody expects a lot of strongholds depending on the player class, over 300 spells, epic adventure with some times linearity and some times open world and etc. Only by not being a wow clone like neverwinter mmo which is a disrespect towards NWN1 and 1991 Neverwinter, nor a complete butchering of rules like Sword Coast Legends, BG3 will be a great RPG FOR MODERN STANDARDS.

PS : Blizzard had a thing called "grandma test", so their games even on 90s needs to be playable by your grandma. Now AAA industry had the "Teletubbies test"
