It's sad when people can't recognize gems like D:OS 2 for what they are because of nostalgia glasses. Baldurs Gate 1&2 had way less C&C and reactivity than D:OS 2, not to mention worse combat. They were good games, but far from perfect.

I'll concede that BGs story is superior though, no doubt. Although D:OS 2 has its moments.
I'll agree with the general idea that the Codex is way too negative on new stuff just to be cool/hipsters, but good lord. I'd rather replay BG2 a hundred times than go through Div:OS2 again. I liked it at first but it turned into a horrible slog, fine for a single playthrough but now I can't even get through the prologue. The combats take way too long and consist of blanketing every area in firey smoke lightning water, the writing is unreadable word vomit, the characters are hideous, the world is tiny and has no sense of coherence, and I don't even remember the story it was so boring.

I replayed BG2 just a bit ago and it was still as good as ever. Still, I bet if you comb through archives you'll find plenty of people here saying BG1/2 were casual decline compared to Wizard's Crown or whatever.
Personal favorite was reading on the Dex about BG2 represents Bioware's Decline.

Their second game? That's the start point, huh? That would imply Bioware was almost never good, and the 'Dex's top list has a lot of Bioware on it.

In other news: I find it weird that Larian include fucking Vitiligo but not more common disabilities. I get it, resource wise we're talking about a saturation slider, but would it kill them to include a missing eye, or crooked nose?

Beyond that, game looks fine to me. I enjoyed D:OS 2 and I'm sure I'll enjoy this when I get it.

The game is like a better vesion of DOS2 so far. It's a solid timewaster but I don't understand why all normies are so hyped. They really enjoy the narrative around a game more than the game itself. Other devs complaining about the effort put into BG3 was probably the single biggest advertisement for it. As long as there's enough hype people would play any piece of shit and call it the greatest game ever.

From everything I've witnessed so far, the degeneracy has been vastly blown out of proportion and you'd essentially have to be trying to seek it out to witness it.

But yeah, you'd miss out on companion quests and their occasional input in conversations if you don't take them. I'm sure there is plenty of content in the game anyway, so just ditch them if you don't think you'll be able to avoid things you don't want to see.

No, it's very real and very omnipresent, BUT (mainly) only in the conversations at camp. As myself and several others have said, being in camp you're frequently confronted with sluttiness/faggotry and looking for conversation options that don't "advance the adult romance" is sometimes like looking for a needle in a haystack, and when you do find it (by adroitly avoiding, like a fucking ninja, all the options that you can just smell are leading to romance/sex-furthering), the choice of avoiding all that shit makes you look like an asshole.

For example, at one point Gale is pissing about with magic (an image of Mystra he's conjured) and he starts waxing eloquent about the intoxicating beauty of the Weave and invites you to try contacting the Weave yourself. There's a charming sequence with some skill checks where you fumblingly try to do emulate him conjuring something weave-y, then you succeed, but then there's a faggot moment where Gale gets close, your two characters are repulsively animated like two faggots smiling and making sheeps' eyes at each other, and then two of the subsequent conversation choices lead to faggot shit in one way or another, with the remaining option being to brutally close the interaction. There's no option where you can be charmed and intrigued by the magic and terminate the experiment in a pleasant bro-like fashion, thanking Gale for the experience, without him sticking his tongue down your throat. This sequence might have worked for a female character (although what are you doing, doing romance as a female character if you're a male player lol), but it's quite jarring the way it's set up - presumably as a "teaching moment" to teach you that "love is love" don't you know. It's quite disgusting.

[Later note: silly me, I realized a few further posts down what it is. The sequence was obviously designed for a female player character and Larian were too lazy to change it appropriately for a male - and being conformist to woke crap afforded them that laziness, and they probably thought it was funny.]

Now you could say, "you don't have to do any of that," and you'd be right. But it could have been alright as a sequence just with a pleasant termination as an option, it's just that the game makes you seem like a Trump supporter for missing out on the teaching moment. While "romance" in CRPGs is a dubious proposition unless very carefully handled (as someone said above, as in BG, where the romance unfolds very gradually from casual to deeper conversations), building relationships in CRPGs can be a good thing, and it widens the gesamtkunstwerk of the CRPG if you have them. But this game canalizes that desire for richer imaginary relationships with your imaginary friends into you being taught to "tolerate" degeneracy.

So yeah, while you can handle the game without any of it, and the combat and exploration are pretty good overall, this (as I've called it) Loverslab Lite approach to the companions is really annoying.

As I said, haven't witnessed any yet. I kind of have a sixth sense for avoiding romances in any CRPG I play though, so that might be part of it. We'll see how it goes I guess.

In other, other news, I finally had a moment where the game really felt like a BG game, felt worthy of the title. It's the side-quest "Search the Cellar", which is partly connected to the side-quest where you look for something for Karlach. The ambience, the music, the types of environments and creatures involved, the difficult combats (if you go that route) even the way you discover the quest (there are several ways of stumbling across it), all of it had a solid BG feeling. Very nice indeed.

There are quite a few little quests that you get just from reading the books, scribblings, etc., that you pick up in your travels, which is always a great immersive touch.

The exploration and combat in the game can be seriously good at times. I find myself polarizing more and more, in terms of loving the game side of the game and hating more and more the woke side of the game - it feels more and more like a carbuncle Larian felt obliged to include, an alien importation derived from taking the worst aspects of BioWare games and cranking them up to 11.

Tbh, this quest was far more involved than any BG quest.

Did you find the book? Did you activate it using the gemstone? And I think researching it continues into the next act.

There are very few BG quests that go this far.

Bro, the guy literally says that he wants you to meet him alone, so that he can show you some magic. It’s the most obvious mingle invitation a man could make.

Just enjoy your virtual gay romance, no need to pretend to hate it, you ain’t deceiving no one.

Forgive me for not being the expert on gay romance you clearly are.

I don't recall anything in the dialog about meeting him "alone". You're right there in the camp. You don't go anywhere.

He just says a bunch of bullshit about magic being like music and then offers to show you what he means.

See 2:12 for the invitation. Nothing romantic about it, unless you think by "Weave" he means an asshole.

I think I'm nearly there, it's not quite finished. I'm having a break and I just felt moved to come here and praise it because I'd been right into it for the past half hour or so and was really enjoying it. (For me the quest started from a bit of side-exploration in the phase spider cave, coming off the looking for infernal iron for Karlach quest.) It's definitely one of the best experiences I've had with the game so far, it has the thing I think most of us chase in CRPGs, that sense of deep immersion, of transport, presence and "being there."
