In theory it allows to do any activities separately, fights included, just like in D:OS 1-2. However why would any sane players do that often enough is beyond me.

It also allows for each player to have a better view of their own surroundings. While it wasn't really that important in D:OS 1/2 because of the turn system, BG3 will allow players whose turns are consecutive to act at the same time to make combat flow faster, meaning that in certain complex terrains with different heights and things like pillars and such, like the spider cave they showed in one of the gameplay showcase, it would allow each player to have good visibility without disrupting the other player.

Furthermore there were certain moments were the party was forcibly split in the D:OS games, like the cave with the insect-like Voidwoken in Reaper Coast, and other times where players can split to solve puzzles that require simultaneous action, or just cheese the game around with teleporting, stealth, thievering etc. It has it uses. It also only activates if the players get separated, so is implemented quite nicely.

Codex Year of the Donut Serpent in the Staglands Dead State Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
You guys might be overthinking this. :P

Split screen couch co-op is a popular feature on consoles, which is why they implemented it for the D:OS 1 console port. No sense in dropping it as a feature now.

Wait, why the fuck would I need split screen coop in a turn based game? What is this?!
Have you ever played any of the D:OS games? Two players can fuck around in two different parts of the map/world, independently of each other.
But why on Earth would you want to do that?

The first rule of adventuring is: Don't split the party

The second rule of adventuring is: Don't split the party.

The third rule of adventuring is: All loot must be shared equally.

I don't know why would you want to do it on couch, but splitting while playing co-op is super useful. When you first enter the city everyone can split around to look for quests and shops at the same time.

Well, that much was obvious to anyone who'd bother reading the old books. Still, nice to have it in a form accessible to young'uns.

I have been active in RPG circles for about that much time. I know people who who liked Bane, were disappointed by his replacement, and were pretty happy when Iyacthu bought it and Bane could be brought back. I have never met a single soul who wanted the same for Bhaal or Myrkul, and plenty who fondly remembered ending their schemes of resurrection in vidya that came out 20 years ago.

I understand it is fashionable to blame "the people" whenever a high status individual fucks up. Sometimes it is even true. God knows the people are stupid. But in this case, there was no groundswell of support for Myrkul's and Bhaal's resurrection. No "people who based their character on them 20 years ago", when the novels detailing the Times of Trouble actually came out more than 30 years ago and those two of the Dead Three were never that popular to begin with. It was, as the comrade said above, the sole decision of Wizards execs to hit the reset button in this way.
Bhaal was not the only dead one, it’s easy to say “we ress them all let the people do what they want is their game”.

also ressing dead gods was extremely common in d&d, i mean mystra die every edition.

Wizards of the Coast has also sent me a reply to my query about what is considered "canon" around the events of the Bhaalspawn Crisis. Here's their reply.

Hello,

Thanks for contacting Customer Service for help with your lore questions! While Wizards of the Coast offers numerous ways to help you understand how to play Dungeons & Dragons, we do not offer support for rules or lore questions.

At the end of the day, D&D is a game. What’s most important while engaged in these epic roleplaying scenarios is having fun. Your DM has to make the final decisions on the fate of the characters in your collective imaginary world. They are the authority. Not Wizards of the Coast, the internet, or even fellow players get to make the final call on a rules or lore decision in your own campaign. Sure, we provide reference materials for setting up your campaigns, but your world is your own to explore and make memories in. Don’t forget to have a good time while doing so.

But to be serious - this is not only even more of a non-answer than Larian; it's also different from what was written back to me several months ago. So either the various PR representatives are making up answers as they go along, or WotC became more tight-lipped in order to not slip up and reveal something which will be present within the game.
Nobody care they don’t waste their time and the wotc money in similar pointless question.

The only one people in the planet that care about that stuff is Ed greenwood.

These numbers are changing continuously as we’re actively developing the game and new content gets introduced daily.

Shitting out the content like some great, dark factory, eagerly counting the number of combat encounter and words : ONE MORE

I can't say that these guys are doing it mechanically, "without soul" ; if anything they have to much soul and everything about the content is just going to be personal and quirky ; fucking disgusting, I'm going to piss in your mouth as it is rather spunky, you must admit. "Got the spunk", said the new animator eagerly ready to integrate the team ; it's all a wonderful family over here

I'm sure when the BG2 devs were tied down to their chairs and hooked up to mountain dew dorito IV drips to work 24 hours a day during crunch time they did it completely with soul

I kinda suspect that both Joseph Stalin and Gyor care more about Forgotten Realms lore than Ed Greenwood does.

The NPC personalities are really try-hard. I'm concerned about self-inserts and mary-sues. They seem like they have rather elaborate and grand backgrounds for characters that are supposed to be accessories to the PC's story.

Larian writing.

I'll take a hard pass on the companions.

If they don't let you make your own party/hire mercenaries, I'll pass on this game.

I could see myself doing a cleric-only run with Shadowheart, but that's about it.

I seriously would have prefered a larger amount of companions who occasionally talk with the main protag instead of companions who could have been the heroes of the game themselves.

I think that's one of the biggest downsides of the origins system they used for DOS2 and want to use for BG3. Everyone has to be a potential 'main character' for the player to play as.

also ressing dead gods was extremely common in d&d, i mean mystra die every edition.
It was the laziest way possible, yes. Mystra didn't really die every edition though. She died once during the Time of Troubles on the 1e->2e transition. Her ascended mortal replacement, Midnight, took the name Mystra to ease the the faithful and died in the 3.5->4e transition. No Mystras were harmed in any other edition.

I suspect that there's at least one companion they haven't revealed, one which will be solely a companion, and not a playable protagonist - Minsc. Up until that last comic issue I thought that he would be just an NPC, since he has his own adventuring party and whatnot, but now he is amnesiac, right after the events of Descent into Avernus, heading to Baldur's Gate... too many coincidences.

He's also the perfect "member berry" provider, since his "unique" intellect and ongoing amnesia means he can dispense bits and pieces of references, without us having the ability to drill him for concrete information.

Well, there is also Mystryl being destroyed by Karsus. Granted, that wasn't during an edition transition.

Which was a huge fucking deal, since it lead to the destruction of Netheril.

I didn't mention her because it is literally ancient history. About as relevant to edition changes as Tyche being split into Tymora and Beshaba, or Jergal giving up his position to the Dead Three.
