What exactly is this mode, aside from beeing harder?

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/01/23/youre-going-to-suffer-levine-on-1999-mode/

Our goal with BioShock: Infinite was always a way to bring those people into this kind of game, but I think the plan right now – my thinking, anyway – is we’re going to hide this mode behind an old-school up, down, left, right, left, right, start button combination on the console to unlock it. You’re not going to have to finish the game to unlock it, but we’re going to hide it because the last thing I want is some guy who’s not an old-school gamer stumbling into this thing, because he’s going to think “alright, this game sucks, I’m never getting into this because it’s so brutal and so punishing – forget it!”

This is so retarded it boogles the mind. "hurr, let me show you how i am a hardcore gamer inserting a cheat code to make the game EASIER, durr". He even says this BS to a PC only blog(yeah i know, most people there only plays console ports anyways).

They could have just called her Alyx and not said a word about what to do about her, players would have figured it all out instantly and not even batted an eye.
Alyx is a HP sponge but she can still die.

It’s not simply a matter of adjusting the difficulty sliders in the game – the team went much further than that. Resource planning? If you’re to survive this mode, proper planning will be crucial. Combat specializations? You’ll need to develop them efficiently and effectively throughout the story; any weapon will be useless to you unless you have that specialization. Combat? You will need to carefully target every shot, and your health will be set to an entirely different baseline. Game saves? Well, yes, there will be those, but according to Irrational Games Creative Director Ken Levine “there are game saves, and you’re gonna f***ing need them.”
“We want to give our oldest and most committed fans an option to go back to our roots,” said Levine. “In 1999 Mode, gamers face more of the permanent consequences of their gameplay decisions. In BioShock Infinite, gamers will have to sweat out the results of their actions. In addition, 1999 Mode will demand that players pick specializations, and focus on them.”

FUCKING GAME SAVES, HOW DO THEY WORK ?! 2 SAVES PER GAME ! HARDCORE 19999999 CYBRPNK

Has Ken forgotten that in 99% of PC games from pre 2000 you could save at anytime any number you wanted?

Read again, he doesn't mention any savegame limitation. He just says you'll need to reload saves a lot because the game will be hard.

Guys, bullets? When you fire them, they're gone. C&C, bitch.

Of course you can always reload to get them back. Pussy.

But you'll immediately get more from whatshername.

umm... That's how we create emotional engagement. Yeah. Every time you have to have her help you become more emotionally indebted to her for her kindness and charity towards you. This is why you should respect and protect women.

If you don't like BioShock Infinite then you hate women. Why do you hate women?

The end of a console cycle should be when you ramp up the difficulty of games and especially sequels since you're dealing with a saturated market and they've already played games before and don't want to play the same thing with a different skin (brand loyalties excepted) or something even easier than what they've already mastered. Disappointing to read that Jew Levine's White Person Killing Simulator took the opposite approach. :(

Levine talks like System Shock 2 had some kind of soul scorching difficulty. It really wasn't that hard of a game, it just required the player to have a level of competence above a zucchini.

This chimp is willing to make the System Shock 2 awesome pro-gamer old skool experts™ jump through hoops to unlock a mode just to spare the feelings of shortbus passengers, lest they tell all their 3 friends not to buy the game because it insults them by listing modes above Shit For Brains

Worse for Bioshock 1 was the choice of whether harvesting the Little Sister for an immediate large Adam reward that lets you buy plasmids, many of them useless or moderately useful compared to those you get at the very start, or save them to get a smaller Adam reward, enough to let you buy the good plasmids, and unique plasmids that are rather useful. The story and game flow is simply unaffected, at best you get different lines from the characters and a different ending video, and though the gameplay is largely unchanged one outcome is simply better than the other, giving you little reason to harvest them unless you want to "play a role".

What a tool. He says this like it's walking in on a mafia crime, pit of spikes, or parents fucking.

Label your difficulty settings appropriately then Levine you pretentious fuck. Have things gotten so bad that you have to hide harder difficulty settings? If people cant read then they should get the fuck off.

All three of them should be unemployed. I'd make fun but they are living stereotypes so no embellishment is needed.

Thing is, tr00 gamers like to play them popamoles at high difficulties. The problem is that these challange settings are totally unbalanced. Either a popamole game is too easy(even on hard) or too frustrating. So Ken don't want his players to be frustrated because he can't into balance.
