Come to think of it, MC's attributes are considerably more rarely used than AoD would have me expect.
The stat checks don't have the same impact with a party-based setup.

Neither do skill checks really, which sorta undermines the consequences your chosen build has for exploration, since skills can be nicely spread out between the group or such was my apprehension of it. I think that stands in opposition to the increased emphasis that was placed on exploring.

This creates game design dissonance, where game simultaneously encourages you both to try different choices but also make the same choices again and again. And obviously, treading the same path is not that entertaining due to lack of variety.
Well, this is precisely the appeal of ITS games for me: iterations and the optimization process. I remember trying out assassin in AoD like 10+ times if not more. But I'm no majority of players for sure.

I bought Colony Ship recently and it's definitely incline. It's also one of the few games released in recent years that was interesting enough to spend time on. More focused and an improvement over AoD. I still prefer some aspects of AoD more and it's a special kind of game, but Colony Ship is that game made by a small team and a dream that medium and large developers wished they could manage with these RPG variant games.

Yes!!! Thank you!! It has failed because its not that good. Not because of difficulty. Knights of the Chalice 2 for example has got way more complex and difficult combat. Reactivity and quests are not that great. Writing and lore and are huge step back compared to AoD. Retarded use to improve system, awful main hub with 3 factions we dont care about. The game is just not that good plain and simple. Oh and yes they have added woke crap.

Sorry guys I just really didn't like colony ship, and I think its flaws are very apparent.


Dungeon rats was ITS best game.

RPGs are still largely a niche genre with a small target audience.

Especially for indies without huge marketing budgets, AAA graphics and high production values.

KoTC2 is a premium product made for a very specific section of an already small audience. I think it may have been more financially successful if it had a higher budget for graphics, but that was clearly not Pierre's priority. I think if he wanted to make a great and beloved game for his specific audience, he succeeded, but I don't know his goals.

A decent chunk of its players won’t be reflected due to having the direct download version because, well… Why get it on Steam when it costs the same without dealing with a middle party?
But then Pierre also made every decision to make it as graphically unappealing as possible, which, like it or not, has an impact in marketability. My high-school friends are huge TT and WHF nerds, and they didn’t even give it a chance after seeing the screenshots.

I just checked, turns out that, during the kickstarter, the Steam key version was 8€ more expensive than the direct download. Freaking Pierre.

What the fuck does it have to do with the discussion? The whole point of that post was to show that quality doesn't neccesarily have a relation with a game's success.

People underestimate the first impression. The average gamer won't even read the game description. He'll just look at the first screenshot or two, think "Oh, more fucking shovelware" and move on to check the next game.
