Sheesh guys chill out, you do know that you dont have to pay for games on the internet? Yea, I know, it is a novel idea but still worth considering. Then you could buy it after trying if it really is worth the price!

Looks like boring game with great atmosphere. Damn. I don't know if I should give it a try or not.

I checked the website and the reviews at bonusweb.cz (79%) and czechgamer.cz (76%). Here are some highlights:

general

- the game has reportedly been in development for more than 10 years
- it is (apparently) a Diablo clone with three classes (priest, paladin, thief) and an integrated torture sim (The official site describes "basic game principles" as investigation-arrest-torture-trial. Your character detects, gathers evidence against and hunts down perpetrators of crimes "against God and the king". Once they are captured, there are four torture methods/implements to choose from to extract further information/confessions. After the trial, you get to personally burn the heretic.)

from the czech gamer review

- the reviewer estimates playing time at 100 hours (main storyline) to 150 hours (with sidequests), HOWEVER he "naturally" did not finish the game as it was "just too long"
- the reviewer further criticizes the dated 2D isometric graphics ("most gamers will dismiss this as soon as they see the first screenshot") and the fact that the game contains too much text ("a veritable tome") with no voiceovers
- the story and dialogues are nevertheless cited as the game's strongest points
- the reviewer complains about respawning enemies and (supposedly) very high difficulty even on "normal", but he also sounds pretty retarded, so I would not rely on anything he says
- the inventory is a mess and items are difficult to pick up

from the bonusweb review

- game is extremely long, gameplay is Diablo + a book's worth of dialogues
- story and writing is where the game shines
- there are recruitable companions but you do not get to choose their equipment and they level automatically (it is not mentioned whether you have any actual control over them)
- the inventory is a mess
- items/loot are extremely hard to pick up as they are small and require frustrating pixel-hunting
- you cannot buy more than one item of the same sort at once (thus, buying 50 potions is a major headache)
- the game owes much of its length to long stretches of dungeon crawling

All in all, it sounds like Divine Divinity with a torture gimmick. Quality of writing (which I have my doubts about in the first place) will probably deteriorate with translation.

Stop it. You've ruined game industry enough by buying mainstream games and/or downloading good games.

Looks a hell lot like Arcanum, even down to the jerky animations.

It would have been a better game had the developers removed a lot of inane combat that occurs at the end of each act (there are at least three afaik) as you have to explore overlong, encounter brimming, multilevel dungeon(s).
With pure realtime combat. Respawning enemies. And insane difficulty.
fyi game difficulty has been already lowered 3-4 times through patches. Initial version was hardcore

I kinda burned out at the end of second act, after around 50 hours of gameplay. Pity as the story was very intriguing.
Might do a LP of this once the english version comes out.

Wait, they actually made this? I seem to recall this being some sort of scam website trying to get money out of people. You mean this is an actual game?

So, any Czech patriots here that have played this and can give us an idea about what it's like?

I picked up a copy and even contemplated writing a review for the Codex, but in the end I barely managed to complete the first chapter (out of the total of three, if I'm not mistaken).

It is more or less a Diablo clone. There are differences, but combat mostly consists of repeatedly spamming the best spell/attack available, interspersed with copious potion consumption. I did not find the gameplay particularly well balanced or addictive and the main dungeon in particular became really tedious relatively fast (the need to backtrack constantly due to absence of a "town portal" spell did not help). Overall difficulty felt distinctly higher than that of similar recent games I've seen (which are not many -- Diablo clones are easily my least favourite RPG subgenre).

Interface and inventory leave a lot to be desired and can get downright annoying at times. There's a large number of quests but practically all of them are linear and of the fetch/kill variety. The torture gimmick is a gimmick.

There are many dialogues, but a very large portion of them is taken up by various NPC's responses to the essentially same set of questions (related to the investigation you conduct) which predictably does get repetitive (although this also means you get to hear various views on and interpretations of the same facts which is arguably one of the game's more interesting elements).

Writing is uneven, full of faux "ye olde" Czech, and generally nothing much to write home about. Given the huge quantity (i.e. high cost of even a passable translation) and questionable quality of the original text, I expect the English version (if it ever happens) to be something along the lines of the first Two Worlds game.

All in all, the game has a large quantity of everything from text to spells to NPCs, monsters, etc. (it's advertised as having well over 100 hours of gameplay and I think that may even be a conservative estimation), but is otherwise quite forgettable. Even if the translation proved good (which I doubt), I'd only recommend it to people who are either really fond of this type of gameplay or find the idea of playing as an inquisitor particularly captivating.
