How Eidos Montreal is streamlining Deus Ex: The Fall for mobile

In The Fall, you can still kill or knock them unconscious, but you don't have to drag the body — it will disappear.

In another example Dugas gave, players don't pick up crates in The Fall because the controls would make it cumbersome. Instead, the game has contextual objects, so if a player has the strength augmentation when they're around an object, they'll be able to move it. Movement is controlled by double tapping on the location to make the character walk and, if the player is near cover, they will automatically take cover.

"Before we launched Human Revolution, a lot of people didn't like that they could see markers on the screen or yellow highlights on objects — they thought it would make the game easy," Dugas said. "But in the end the game was a good challenge and it was really demanding. It asked you to be creative in the way you solve challenge, and I would say for The Fall, it's exactly the same thing."

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Then why the fuck they trying to mimic full 3D Deus Ex in tablet?

It'd be more better if this is a 2D action game that they revealed as an April Fool's joke.

I still don't understand if the DX:HR team at EM actually developed this game or if it was somebody else.

London, 8th July 2013 - Square Enix is happy to announce that Deus Ex: The Fall, the winner of seven “Best Mobile/iOS Game” awards at E3 2013*, will be coming to iOS devices this Thursday, 11th July.

:lol:

I still would've preferred THIAF for mobiles. Oh well. Can't have everything.

Why are they even insisting on making shooters for tablets? They play like absolute shit anyway. It's good for games like Xcom or Space Hulk, not this.

Anybody with an iPad to check this bullcrap out?

Reviews: http://gamebanshee.com/news/111812-deus-ex-the-fall-released-reviews.html

Not only has Deus Ex: The Fall been released (a day early in fact, as the game was already available yesterday), but a few reviews for the mobile title have been released and, while overall mixed, the positive opinions seem to outnumber the negative ones.

IGN, 8.2/10.
Frustrating combat aside, it’s almost astounding how successful The Fall is at distilling the core Deus Ex experience onto a mobile device. The mysterious and well-told story, steady stream of powerful new augments, and impressive game world all combined to create a mobile experience I didn’t want to put down after I started.

GameReactor, 7/10.
As it stands, we do want to see more, play more. But it'll take a few more runs to see if the combat system clicks. Those used to action titles in this ilk on the format may have an easier time of it. This is an impressive title for a format that continues to surprise us. Deus Ex fans shouldn't feel that they're being short-changed. One thing it does trump Human Revolution though, hands-down? None of those damn boss fights.

Eurogamer, 5/10.
On paper, this is just the kind of iOS tie-in fans often ask for: it's faithful to the source material, filled with familiar systems and details, and it's even made a decent attempt at matching the graphical style of the main game. It's Deus Ex in cross-section, but although so many of the right pieces are in place, the energy and skill that usually brings the whole thing to life is missing. Regardless of whether you believe Deus Ex's basic genome should have adapted a little more for its new platform in the first place, there's no debating the fact that any sequel will require some serious augmentation.

GamesBeat, 82/100.
I’m shocked. The Fall works. Bringing an experience as complicated as Deus Ex’s to a touchscreen should have been a mess, but I was easily sneaking, hacking, and headshotting my way through the short campaign. I don’t know if I’m ready to call myself a mobile gaming convert, but this is definitely one of the deeper experiences I’ve had on an iOS platform.

Computer and Videogames, 6/10.
But while it has everything the main game has - augmentations, weapon customisation, freedom to use stealth or direct combat, branching dialogue, computers to hack, moral choices - it's all hindered by the touchscreen controls. Movement is sluggish, and the twitchy camera and unreliable lock-on make combat feel laboured and unresponsive. Stealth in Deus Ex requires a level of finesse that these ungainly controls simply don't provide.

...

There's about five hours of game here, or three if you don't pursue the numerous optional missions on offer. For us, the best thing about this spin-off is returning to Human Revolution's universe. It's one of our favourite game worlds, and the high production values and beautiful environment design in The Fall are as good as anything in the main game. So good, in fact, that we wonder if - and hope that - Square Enix will release it as PC/console DLC.

I wonder when 9.9 will be the new 1.

Maybe game journos should switch to a number of nines scale already?

Suddenly 11.2/10, game of the eon :hearnoevil:

I don't think I can take it anymore, maybe I should take up hard drugs?

I thought about using a numbered scale on the reviews i write on my site, but i opted for a simple "i recommend it" or "i don't recommend it".

As i only review games i enjoy and only those that are about zombies in some way, it all works out. :smug:

That reminds me of a pretty funny fake HL2 "review" from the Finnish Pelit magazine: 97/100, best game ever, and so on. It was actually column that was written based on early HL2 previews, meant to ridicule the hype-driven reviews in other magazines and especially the people who trust that kind of reviews. It was pretty spot-on and pretty much read like an IGN review.

Then the same guy (Niko Nirvi) reviewed the final game when it came out and only gave it 96/100, saying that it was the Sistine Chapel of video games*. Oh well. It was a pretty well-written review nonetheless, containing some actual criticism and enough information to tell whether the game is worth playing or not. Nowadays it's hard to find a review that says anything of value about the actual gameplay, except that it's either completely awesome or completely frustrating depending on the amount of Doritos sent to the reviewer.

* Another reviewer in the same magazine gave Halo 2 a ridiculously high score and compared it to Mona Lisa shortly before that, so it was mostly just a jab at a somewhat less critical collegue. It's not like it makes a huge difference whether you give a game 91 or 96 points anyway.

Who wants to bed you can spend credits on cash items in a cash shop, and buy them now for just $19.99?

- Increased XP rewards for completing objectives;
- Increased the amount of credits gained as rewards, across the game;
- Improved damage and accuracy stats for the Combat Rifle;
- Increased accuracy of Shotguns for better mid-range effectiveness;
- Reduced some weapon costs (including high-end Plasma Rifles and Rocket Launchers).
So... patching means streamlining these days.
