5.5 hours in, just finished the first day. If it keeps up like this it's easily game of the year. I haven't found any of the writing to be pretentious thus far.

"Pretentious" is what happens when people are out of their league. POE1 is more pretentious than Torment, because while Torment is that university kid totally obsessed with philosophy, said kid actually did sort of read through the philosophy. Disco Elysium is not out of its league, it's in its element.

I think the Thoughts system really helps - it takes a lot of things where RPGs need to convey information or set the tone for the player in an expository and awkward way, and provides a natural dramatic situation for those functions to be fulfilled. That is actually a brilliant mechanical innovation to the dialogue system. You don't need to have fucking chosen one superpowers giving you flashbacks into people's souls filled with narrative information, because you can have Empathy point things out or Authority do so all in their own particular ways. Your primal urges can talk to you and so can your sixth sense, so you don't need long narrations inbetween dialogue about how the cave is filled with foreboding.

Character progression, equipment, roleplay, you missed a couple things there.
LoL you are dumb, the game have all that shit you braindead money. It have maybe the best character progression in a game,it rivals that of a torment.....for now. So it seems if there is no bang bang-boom boom then it is not an rpg,too many popamolist here this days.

what are some good builds?
All of them really, maybe a 4444 will be shit tho. It is nice to have a dominant attribute. Also 6666 could be bad because you get too many successful checks and end up loosing too much time.

Cant play it yet, but - how terrible would be a full int/psyche build?

Booksmart and emotionally intelligent. Doesn't seem too bad.

Afraid my character will get carried away by the wind blowing, thus gettting the game over screen 2 hours in.

Wanna role-play an ubermench who fell from his graces, thanks to the good old combo of alcohol, drugs, and depression. Prolly wont be able to drink a beer without fainting ingame, tho. Also, I find something about a cop who cant rise his coffee cup incredibly funny.
That is my dude, did have quiet the fuck beating the shit out of the racist nigga and the go talk with him about his racist theory, also ended up nationalist :)

Soo i played it for like 10 hours and now am going to bed. I am yet again amazed how lazy and retarded the journos and youtube roaches are. Their pisses filled noggins couldn't even gate the basic crudness and when they see a faggit they go full "haha great funny game haha",while the writing in the game is really fucking dark with some humour sparkled in to disguise the depressive setting.

Played through the first day. Whole lotta shit I want to talk about but I suppose I won't just because I don't want to spoiler tag everything and (Potentially) don't want to know the answers regarding alternate routes/solutions. First day was fantastic though. Character is 6 physical 4 motorics 1 intellect 1 psyche and I'm having a lot of fun with the fact that my character immediately gets hard every time he's talking to a woman. I don't think I've had a single conversation with one yet where electrochemistry doesn't pop up. Including the old lady in the wheelchair. Also not going to be racist because Kim is a ridiculously huge bro, but there's a menace, gentlemen. The roasties. Still going to fuck them of course, but angrily!

Well, finishing up my first day at about 6 hours. All I can really say right now is that this game is extremely unique and I'm actually surprised at how addicted I am to it and how engaging it is. I knew I was going to like it to some degree just based on the premise and the vague notion I had of the roleplaying elements presented within it, but I really wasn't expecting it to keep me hooked so thoroughly. Really impressed and surprised at just how good it is.

Latro - you show me any visual novel that plays like this, and I'm playing it. This isn't a visual novel, though. It's a true RPG.

To me, the most impressive thing about the first few hours is how it gets a sense of jaded, quiet loneliness - anomie if you like your old scholars - right. You're a drunk fat loser squeezing the last days of your liver, and that's funny in that black humour way, but it's also lonely - not in a melodramatic way but in a quieter, pervasive way. There's the loneliness of that old guy, wound up so tight in that old uniform like it's a tourniquet, his only remaining companion a god damned socialist. There's the loneliness of the late capitalist worker ticking the ever-increasing number of boxes required to stay barely employable, but also the loneliness of communism washed up on the rocks. It's all the kind of stuff that you need to depict with a subtle touch, not go into shitty sob stories.

You don't interact with the object directly from your inventory. I think a yellow button should appear when you stand in front of the lights.

First, does this need 10 major patches and 3 DLCs to be a playable, finished product?

Also, am I gonna like it if I'm completely retarded at solving crime plots and never see the murderer coming?

It’s much less buggy than most games at launch, even major ones.

How do you feel about being a failure?

Maybe Obsidian will hire some writers from ZA-UM.

A man can dream.

A *dream*? That's nightmare! They will spoil them! I have seen it too many tomes - taleted persons changed their lifestyle and enviroment, sity and country only to find themself NOT talented anymore - instead drunk dry as if by a vampire, with all creativeness soaked into the sand.

I would un-ironically like to see a mashup of Josh’s combat system autism with ZA/UM’s deranged writing and worldbuilding. Maybe ZA/UM could hire Josh?

So basically, this is a 40-eur point and click adventure game that probably runs for around 5-6 hours because there are no difficult inventory puzzles?
Ah no my friend, it's similar to the book you read and can interact with it's story each line. It's very goood crpg with lot of refreshing factor.
It's not action one crpg like many other these days. For enjoy it you must be in the mood, have time and like to read.
Then it's great own paced game, with lot of fine feautres and very fine details.

In some way it reminds me era when games were not only products made for money but also a work of passion and kind of art. To be honest i m sure that kind of games today are made with help of ancient aliens.
It is not similar quality as Planescape Torment in the writing , it's MUCH BETTER than Planescape Torment.

This game my man is instant classic, i only wish for that studio to make long expansion packs for it and Disco Elysium 2 .
Anyway anything they will release in the future i will be first guy in the queue to paid for it.
It's really something new, great and having same feeling of playing fresh , goundbreaking game out of tradtional schemes that locked crpgs for years is very similar to the feeling when i played Fallout 1 for a first time whe it was released.
Please give this game a Chance and it will take You for an incredible role playing journey.
It's not only another simple cliche of the genre modules, it's game that will give you similar feeling to the painting oil on canvas.
It will make You Wonder, Wander, Ask, Think, it will give you right to question your own sanity, it will make you entertained, YOU will NEVER feel bored when enter Disco .

It's perfect, it's already eternal.
It's climate is like Blade runner detective get drugs , and enter victorian high tech post revolutionary steam age with communism flavour around, when post apocalyptic and eerie lovecraftian insane beings takes control of human morality and desires, it's like slowly dripping of oil paint that will uncover true image under first layer, it's like spending days on psychiatric clinic while whole world outside gets really insane.
It's not fucking simple love letter to role playing fans, which fucks with your nostalgia about elves and dwarves fucking around to save the world once again. It's brutal wicked and hungry, loud bizzare sex with most secret fantasies of each role playing gamer. You will love it man, you will love it becouse no other crpg game will fuck your mind so good in the disco lights. It's Chet Baker fucking quality of trumpet in the genre. You will return becouse disco calls.

If aliens doesn't exist who made great games like this one then… im not saying it was aliens but it was aliens who made this exellent title.
Lets ask an expert here… Giorgio my man what do You think about it:

I've made more decisions about who my character is in 3 hours than the entire Witcher trilogy

Would you kindly fuck off already. It took me four hours just to punch out a nigger.

Playing a high phys character is really mixed bag. I *should* be winning all my rolls to break stuff, but I'm still failing. And getting hurt when kick inanimate objects.

Who says the game doesn't have combat? I've already fought it out with a door, a potty mouthed kid, a black supremacist and a dumpster.

But seeing how much you are missing is a bit agitating. Really not sure if it is worth it.

Not terrible at all. Just expect to fail at doing anything physical. Also I recommend putting a point in Perception early and finding some way to raise the cap or you’ll just obliviously walk past everything.

There's just one thing that's bothering me. I really can't get close to the body. What happens if we can't finish a task before the end of the day?

Nothing, but your partner will complain that you didn't do enough on the first day (although you can blame it on your hangover and what not).

Weird to see comparisons to PST here. Is the writing/story THAT interesting? (I mean, how can the story be nearly as interesting as the PST story? Of course, I am asking *you*, PST fans.)
