They're just following the hype train. Sadly, if the critical consensus on this was overwhelmingly negative, those same people would be slagging it off. In this industry it's all about the hype. People love what they're told to love and hate what they're told to hate.
True, although in the past I've seen most popamolers dismiss turnbased games without even trying them. I honestly thought turnbased was an automatic dealbreaker with that sort of crowd so am genuinely surprised at some of the feedback.

Just have a look at the comments section under this IGN review. Those popamole lovers are practically singing praises. How in the fuck did Larian do it?
Because the people at IGN are sheep, told by their IGN overlords to praise Divinity: Original Sin. But on a serious note, this game is getting praised almost everywhere. They made an old school RPG (so people praise it to feel like a part of the old school elite master race club) that manages to be pretty accessable so the popamolers were not scared off.

The only people who seem to be negative about this game are the old school RPG fans whose first RPG was BG2 or Kotor 1 on the XBAWKS, because old school RPGs were for most of the part RTwP and not turn based.

Yeah, you're probably right. But then again, the massive hype and follow the crowd mechanics can convince them to give it a try and stick with it longer than they'd normally do, but they do seem to enjoy specific aspects of the game. Like its difficulty and lack of hand-holding. Maybe, just maybe those popamole lovers simply didn't know they'd enjoy a good RPG, because they never tried it... naah, I'm beeing silly too optimistic.

I have one question. Why doesn't Zandalor's trunks talk, or sing or whatever it supposed to do? Do I have to do something in the game to "acitvate" it?

Not really. My trunks talked without any activation. (e.g. accusing me of being an oaf, when I smash vases :P)

You need to use the member who is equipped them. He actuallty won't shut up especially when stealing/pickpocketing...

Edit: It talks,

When you level up,
When you break lots of things with one attack/spell,
When you steal or commit a crime,
When you enter some major place or encounter a major event.

I always like when my ARPGs have me spending 2 hours in town exploring, talking, solving murders and framing innocent people.
Hommlet sucked though. :P

There's a tagline for you. Divinity: Original Sin: Like Troika's ToEE except actually good.

good news for those playing this in co-op

This is a very simple mod which allows up to two more people to join your game where they can control the companions/henchmen.

This shouldn't require updates and work whatever the version you have installed.

I am planning on doing an 'Extended 4 Player' in the future which would allow the customisation of four characters, but this is simply for those who are daunted by Hex Editors or cannot be bothered to change the Main.pak after every daily update.

Note: This currently only works for games created with this mod activated. I will remedy this to allow for existing games created without this mod activated if it is possible.

Some hilarious posts in that thread! This one guy actually cites Endless Space as an example of a hardcore game with a steep learning curve:
"Like I said I cut my teeth learning to play Endless Space without any assistance, didn't win until my 4th match, I am not averse to steep learnign curves."

And of course the classic "I'm too busy to think while playing a game":
"I just don't have the time to figure everything out. With our busy lifestyles, sometimes we just want to kick back and have fun, not waste the little time we have or I have trying to understand the game."

Well that review makes it painfuly obvious that the reviewer only played like for 10 hours tops just to see a half of the first city, lol. What a goddamn retard.

A lot of people love things where you can just fuck around, whether it's the Sims or Minecraft or whatever. A game includes these fuck-around mechanics = these people end up playing and enjoying it as long as it doesn't have obnoxious elements as a barrier. Arcanum had fuck-around mechanics, but alas, too much obnoxiousness for most.

guys is there a way to make it so that you select the inventory of a person by clicking their portrait instead of having to shuffle through their names in the top box? its so annoying. a mod or something for that?

Ok. I have wiped my install, wiped my account folder with all the form information... basically a 100% fresh install and I still can't swap hotbars. At all. This game is 100% unplayable for me now until I figure out how to fix this or Larian does. But it seems I am literally the only person having this issue. Fucked up.

What a fucking hassle!

Just finished the sleeping goblin fight, I figure I wasn't supposed to fight them, but eh, looked like fun. Was one of the funner fights I've been in, those overwhelming numbers, and individually they have crazy ap scores, not to mention level difference was big. Was getting bored with the difficulty curve but that was enjoyable, remember, definitely engage them when you get up to that point.

This. Retards are buying this on Steam just because they see it in the #1 seller slot. They have no idea what a turn based crpg is but... hey, it's t3h best seller so insta-buy! The highest rated review of the game says it combines the best parts of Skyrim and Witcher 2... need I say more?

After todays patch I can no longer scroll through my hotbars either with the up/down buttons on the hotbar itself or the new hotkeys. Am I missing something?

It could be worse. I clocked in 87 hours and and had no idea there are multiple hotbars until reading the last few pages of this thread.

No. That's not worse. You're just an idiot.

I honestly think the game's success owes a lot to the following:

1. VERY well-made coop. Guy#1 enjoys game, plays with guy#2, and even if guy#2 doesn't normally play RPGs he enjoyes it due to Guy#1's guidance + emergent nature of the game, Guy#2 tells about it to other people and so on... It's the best and most direct kind of word-of-mouth advertising a developer can get.

2. Big open interactive world- with note on INTERACTIVE world. That feeling of "Hahah, that shit actually worked!" and "lol, I made a pumpkin helmet!" make this game as much as a big sandbox filled with toys rather than "just an RPG". And it's not the barren, lifeless sandbox Bethesda games usually offer, either. You don't have to be an RPG fan to enjoy that kind of stuff. It actually has pretty huge appeal.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Ultima's success also due to it's big sandboxy nature mixed with a user-friendly interface (compared to most RPGs of the time)?

3. Also, iirc Larian did some youtuber promotion for the game, and that could very easily set up a chain reaction.

And on top of it all, it's a great quality game. Combine it all and this kind of success is what you get.
