Do people know the truth about Team Fortress?

They stole the idea from a much better game and then won just because they are Valve. Then they made the lame cartoon sequel that's all about buying hats. And that's what people think Team Fortress is all about. But originally it was awesome before they stole it and turned it into shit.

1. Valve was 1/10 of what it is now when TF 1 was made. They won because they had a good eye for talent and quality. That's an admirable quality in itself.
2. You are being reductionist about TF2. You can make anything seem worthless when you describe it like that.

The "truth" you are speaking of is a nothingburger.

No they won because they took a successful mod from a game and copied it, only worse, but people played it over the original because they didn't know about the original.

Team fortress was for people who were too poor to afford quake 3 and/or the unreal tournament games.

It was long before those games existed. It was a mod for the original Quake in 1996, it was awesome.

It was like Team Fortress that Valve made but earlier and better. It was faster paced, and the physics allowed you to fly around with explosions. So aiming took more skill because you often bounced your enemy around up into the corners of the room and stuff, so you aimed at all angles and had to get good at predicting the way people fly around so you can aim ahead. But it also allowed you to do things called Rocket Jumps where the soldier could shoot a rocket at their own feet and jump at the same time and it let them blast themselves up onto high ledges where snipers waited and stuff. It took some of his health to do it but could pay off. And later people figured out how to do it with grenades which was much harder but could blast you across the map.

Also it started with 2fort2 which was the original 2 castles with a bridge between and flags in each. But they quickly made bigger and more advanced maps, and there were a lot, some were amazing. And most of them never made it to Valves lame abomination.

It's one of the first big online games. And it was also beautiful when Glide and 3dfx came along. Nicer looking than any of the videos I can find.

No, they actually hired the guys that made the mod to make it for Half-Life.

https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Team_Fortress

Because of its popularity, Team Fortress has spawned an endless amount of mods for not only Team Fortress, but other games as well. The game continues to be played competitively today, largely through its open-source fork FortressOne.

Valve took an interest in the Team Fortress Software organization and hired the three creators to work on a Team Fortress Half-Life mod, and later a standalone version called Team Fortress Classic (TFC), released in 1999. A standalone sequel to Team Fortress Classic, Team Fortress 2 (TF2) was developed by Valve and released in 2007.
Also it started with 2fort2
2fort4 and it wasn't the first map, but it was the most overused and overrated one.

Is this a serious thread? Valve did not steal the modification, it hired its creators (as pointed out by Saint_Proverbius) and they all worked on both Team Fortress Classic and Team Fortress 2.

That may be so but the Valve game was like a military shooter that was totally different to play. And sucked. And it took people from the original game which died and didn't deserve it.

Robin Walker to this day is one of their best hires so I'm glad things worked out the way they did.

That's exactly what poaching is. And it killed that game. It killed the better game.... and all the money and focus went on their shitty remake. Do you not see an issue?

I'm pretty sure they were better off getting paid to make stuff, rather than making a "Team Fortress 2 4 Quake 2!" or whatever else, for free. I also dislike the way Quake plays in general, it's a good game but I much prefer Half-Life's movement and gunplay. And I hate Half-Life.

This is a bomb shell. I always had my doubts about Gabe Newells claim that Team Fortress 2 idea came to him in a dream
