In the "dark age of gaming" (i.e. the xbox-xbox360 generation), commercial failures were usually anticorrelated with the quality of the product (e.g. Looking Glass, Black Isle, Troika, etc.)

The same anticorrelation was seen also in the case commercial success: the more the games were dumbed down, the more the normies were happy to consume them (see Bethesda, the same Bioware, etc.)
