I always destroy my maps after finishing the game. Makes me happy.

When I replayed Summoning, finding and using my old maps for Ebony Knight's Domain and Otherworld One, teleport puzzles, was very satisfying.

Do you have to melee them?
I noticed that the Ash Bow is called "Troll Slayer". Maybe that's a hint?
Checked my old save. Bow skill is "feeble" and cutting is "weak" (now modest). Found a way to grind, though. You can save on the first level, so I just kill several trolls, return back and save on the first level stairs. Fire spell is good for killing trolls, but there are giant army of them on level 3. I can't even use invisibility spell because they block narrow passages.

I actually found the Trolls quite easy. Energy Blast on minimum power kills them; several if they are lined up. I made sure I was not overburdened (I think it slows down your character and dramatically increases the spawning rate) and rested after casting spells.
But the Troll boss was a different matter. He killed my character in one blow. Seems impossible to kill. The game text said Energy Blast hurt him, but he was never anything but Unwounded. I tried the Stun&Melee combo with not much more luck.
I guess I'll just have to Stun him, grab the Lightstone and run upstairs.
I think the devs were trolling us with this boss fight...

Just use spirit-fire - Balefire - and pray for the best.

Great thread. Over the weekend, I found a folder with the maps I made for Eye of The Beholder (and other series.)

Back then, I was using highlighters on graph paper to mark progression, along with written notations.

And something more recent, a Grotto level from Elminage Gothic.

That second map looks just like something I could have done.
I went from highlighting progress with a pencil, then moved on to just using a pen, and marking each square passed through with a dot.

Yeah, I later switched to the method of marking steps with a dot, and then fill in the walls of hallways and rooms.

The maps in Elminage Gothic are uniformly 19 x19, and easier to work within those confines. Eye of the Beholder was a real nightmare not having coordinates or known starting position, often running into the edge of the map paper and continuing on the other side. I also realized, I was playing Eye of the Beholder in 1995, and Elminage Gothic in 2015. Twenty years of dungeon mapping!

And with just increased to "fair" strength I'm finally not overburdened.

This is my own character after having cleared the Goblin Cave and found the Tome of the Ancients:

I've spent all excess money on herbs so far, but I see Power Control has increased quite a bit, so I guess it's safer to cast Heal now.
I'll also buy an Ash Bow if I know I'm about to enter a Troll infested dungeon.
Although relying on magic may be safer, since in my experience one casting uses far less "action points" than loosing one arrow (which rarely do much damage anyway). So I'm using bow outdoors, magic indoors and melee against weaklings and critically hurt enemies.

These screens are from.. a Wiz 1 port?

How do you know what's a floor that you haven't passed and what's an unpassable wall between the floors? On the picture I can't tell the difference.

The colors are gouache. Green is Holbein G 553 Moss Green. The grey (magical darkness) is Winsor & Newton Neutral Grey 3

The last of my Proving Grounds maps. Didn't fully map floor eight cause that rotation field is lollerskates. Also didn't do floor ten, because dumapic doesn't work there and it's pretty linear anyway.

The pink (magical dead zone) is Winsor & Newton Flesh Tint. In retrospect I wished I'd used more of an Ash Rose sort of color, tho I still think the flesh tint is pretty pukey in a way that works for the effect.

Digital aberration on floor six is a result of rotating the image, alas.

What size are those paper sheets? Looks bigger than A4.
I recall trying to find bigger graph papers at my local stationery when I realized just how big the Wiz 5 are, but found only A4.

They're the same size as the other sheets, 11 x 8.5. Really small squares, tho. Had to draw it out with a .3mm Pentel mechanical pencil. Larger sheets with regular sized squares would've been preferable, but like you I wasn't able to find any.

I have to say, after starting to use grid cartographer I can't imagine going back to paper, though your maps look really great, almost like pieces of art

To unlock the maps, player have to discover some scroll that will teach a secret password. Next thing to do is to use this site, it reveals the drawed map of an ancient adventurer, but I've been told they are still uncompleted.I've also unlocked the Darven Mine map level, but I've lost the scroll and didn't save the code :negative:
