So far I've managed to avoid ever using a controller. But I guess I should bite the bullet and start using one for Elden Ring.

I'm guessing that mouse & keyboard would be an actual handicap since you've got less fluent control of the angles that you roll in and attack from.

Any DS vets actually using mouse & keyboard for Elden Ring? Any advantages that I'm missing?

I beat all of them with KB&M (even Demon's Souls). They are not very demanding games and they don't require player to be precise.

Was Kingdom Hearts III just a disappointment because of its quality, or was it a buggy mess like the other two?

It was because of its quality. The game's difficulty was too low with some new mechanics that were questionable. In particular the "attractions", a kind of cinematic attack that made you invincible during their durations and could clear whole hordes of enemies easily. While the Dinsey worlds were overall better and very distinct, the last segment of the game felt rushed, with small levels and a lot of boss rushes. Also there was a lack of interesting side content, and the secret boss was easy and boring. The plot was considered even worse than usual, with a very shitty ending and there was some fuckery with FF's characters not appearing at all with the exceptions of the moggles and some references like cactuars.

While the RE:mind DLC would then improve the game greatly, introducing Critical Mode, allowing the player to deactivate the attractions attacks in exchange of a higher rate of weapon transformation (which was much more fun), adding a new ending segment that improved quite a bit over the original, and the new Data Fights, which are some of the hardest and best fights of the series, plus a new and harder secret boss (that may be relevant for the future of the sage), the damage was already done. The game remains quite divisive for fans and the mainstream considers it a failure. Doesn't help that people seem to have memory holed that KHII had the same issues on release, and it wasn't until Final Mix that it became the "DMC3" of KH so to speak.

I do play those games with controller, but I imagine camera controls during unlocked combat are more responsive and precise.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
Playing those games with M&K is more than doable but controller is preferable, movement is way smoother and more precise. It's not a huge deal but crossing the narrow beams in Blighttown or the branches in Great Hollow can be annoying with MK. I've always found the janky-ass jumping easier with a controller too.

I avoid controllers whenever possible but they are far more convenient for me in dark souls. You lose precise camera control but the ergonomics and ease of use make up for it imo. I think the only other games I use controllers for are Devil May Cry and it's lookalikes.

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Grab the Codex by the pussy RPG Wokedex Strap Yourselves In Codex Year of the Donut Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath I helped put crap in Monomyth
I've completed all three Dark Souls titles with KB&M, but it's generally smoother on a controller. Having analog input with regards to movement speed in particular is very useful for several sections where you need to move very carefully.

That said, I was able to execute parries much more smoothly with the mouse, but that's probably more of an issue with what I'm used to rather than the control system itself.

I'm kind of surprised that a lot of people here played Dark Souls with mouse and keyboard. Usually that is my preference as well, but DS was pretty much designed for a controller and I can't have it any other way. Really, you can play it with anything, people beat these games with the Guitar Hero drum sets and bananas.

Made me remember that this Dark Souls speedrunner beat it using a dance pad. I guess M&KB will be fine.

Launch trailer is out. It shows a ton of new stuff, so don't watch if you want to avoid spoilers.

That launch trailer is pure hypetrain but also full of spoilers:cry: But can you be spoilered if you do not know what the fuck you are looking at?

Two more days:bounce:

Guys, just don´t watch trailers. Knowing Miyazaki, it's confirmed there are gonna be poison swamps, crestfallen warriors, level ups waifus, big dragons flying away, Patches-like trolls, the Moonlight Sword, 20 Berserk references, annoying snipers, etc.

Just get together fresh to release date.

Re. the controller issue, I wonder if they're so well suited to fighting games because the "travel" of a button is so tiny (as opposed to a normal keyboard key that you have to press down a fair bit), so your reflexes are transmitted faster?

If my theory is correct, then laptop keyboards should be better for fighting games than normal keyboards; still not as tiny an amount of travel as a controller button, but much less than a normal keyboard.

The mapping of the buttons in Dark Souls is very intuitive, left shoulders for the left hand, right for the right hand. Dodge (you'll be doing it a lot) with the rightmost button, easy to find, use Estus/item on the opposite side so you don't press it by accident. With the d-pad you cycle your items, conveniently represented on screen in an analogous manner.
Where it fails are the ancillary actions that had to be jammed in somewhere. Jumping is the obvious one. Clicking the left analog stick is awkward, but pairing it with the dodge button was downright imbecilic. You jump by accident, when you want to dodge, no i-frames, sad.

The guy writing the Game Informer review says the embargo ends tomorrow morning. Key sites like GMG and Fanatical are also sending out keys tomorrow.

Oh yeah, one small concern. From's games like to have issues detecting controllers on PC. This wasn't an issue for me with DS3, but with 2 I had to do some real fiddling around and I can't even remember the solution. Then with Sekiro I couldn't get it to recognize my controller no matter what. This was an.... evaluation copy, but that shouldn't affect it.

Now, I have a DS5 emulated as a 360 controller via DS4windows so it's not the typical setup. Retroarch also didn't like this setup - I believe it is because it makes the PC see two controllers at once and only accepts input from one?

Anyway, something to keep in mind. (if someone had a similar issue with Sekiro and managed to fix it, do tell me.)

Keys won't help you since it's still locked on steam.

Replayed Sekiro this month, no issues with my controller, just plug and play.

I hope you meant to say action games instead of fighting games because gamepads are shit for fighters. I'm far better with a keyboard and most people would take a stick over a gamepad. Also there are a lot of options for travel time to actuation for keyboards. Gamepads aren't special in that department. My optical keyboard has a far lighter touch than my PS5 gamepad and I wouldn't be surprised if the actuation point is lower.

Preload seems to be available now, although I think it's still dependent on your local time.

You need to tick the option in DS4Windows that says "Hide DS4 Controller".

That actually didn't help with Sekiro, I know it does with others.

Off topic: I play fighting games on boxes but a lot of great players use pads.

On topic: I replayed sekiro recently and had no trouble with a ps4 controller. Granted I wasn't using an "evaluation" copy lol
