Frontier are probably being as honest about the background simulation as EA was about Sim City. Forcing always-online by holding part of the game hostage has proven to be the strongest DRM yet, as it takes longer for crackers to write a new server than bypassing a few lines of code.

We'll probably seen an offline client eventually. But I wouldn't count on it coming in the first year.

If the last couple of gammas are any indication, the game will be downright unplayable until mid-January or they release a proper off-line patch.
I am not sure about this. In my experience, only the first day after the patches is critical, after that, I never experienced any disconnections.
Servers are still total arse today and it's not patch day.

They've been coming out with a new update sometimes twice a day. I'd say it'll be at least a week after launch before the server issues clear up. Maybe 2 weeks.

it's fascinating how just a simple music change changes the feel of the trailer so much that it's not so cringe-worthy any more...

It's still shit. The music is even worse than the original track, which isn't actually that bad to begin with.

How can someone say this is beyond my comprehension. You can say that this trailer is still bad, but if you like that kind of music more than the remixed version than you have a pretty bad taste in music. That one is awful. The shittiest kind of rock.

I didn't say I liked it, fanboy. Slow your roll.

It's certainly more engaging than a horn blaring electric farts into my eardrums.

it's fascinating that to you it is less cringeworthy now, when to me that generic epic soulless jarre-imitation only highlights the stupid action nature of the visual content further via contrast, making it even worse than the previous shit.

guess i'm getting old...

This sounds really scientific, but it is bullshit. This music doesn't highlight anything, but I guess it is useless to argue about taste in music.

If the music of a trailer doesn't highlight anything in the trailer then you've just made a bad trailer.

scientific? the problem with the trailer is the fucking content, not the music. the previous track at least fit the content, this one doesn't, and only makes the content look worse due to not even fitting it. nothing scientific about it.

of course it's soulless, it's 2 Steps from Derp... i really don't hear much Jarre in it (not enough to call it "imitation", at least... but then again, i'm far from an expert on his opus), it just sounds like "generic movie trailer music" (tm) that you hear in every "epic" movie trailer ever. it's bland and boring but still 10000000 billion times better than that angsty teen rock that would make a nickelback fan cringe. that shit wouldn't fit a CoD trailer.. fuck, that shit doesn't fit any trailer. to me it didn't make it worse, it just "calmed" the mood, made it a bit more... something that isn't the obnoxious assault on my intelligence and ear drums that was the previous one (yes, the trailer is still bad... no background music can make it good). it upgraded it from "holy fucking shit is this stupid" to "fuck, this is pretty bad"

oh well... i guess their skills at making trailers is about on par with their skills at maintaining servers :troll:

i told you so, it was very obvious, but you laughed (and i still believed you all and bought it anyway :( )

2 hours 32 minutes until release. 2 hours, 30 minutes 15 seconds until servers go down. 2 months, 2 hours, 32 minutes, 58 seconds until servers become stable.

Also, Frontier Developments flip-flopped on a promise (wow, where have we heard that before?)

Following last nights patch, the 25% insurance reduction for early backers was reduced to only being 25% on the hull. All modules are insured at full cost now. (And on a fully upgraded ship, modules make up ~80-90% of the ship value). PEople were upset about this and made threads in the forum, which are now being locked and deleted.
