Frontier are probably being as honest about the background simulation as EA was about Sim City. Forcing always-online by holding part of the game hostage has proven to be the strongest DRM yet, as it takes longer for crackers to write a new server than bypassing a few lines of code.
We'll probably seen an offline client eventually. But I wouldn't count on it coming in the first year.

Servers are still total arse today and it's not patch day.I am not sure about this. In my experience, only the first day after the patches is critical, after that, I never experienced any disconnections.If the last couple of gammas are any indication, the game will be downright unplayable until mid-January or they release a proper off-line patch.
