What about the slow as fuck turning rates? Sitting in a siedewinder is like flying a capital ship. Only rolling has good speed. I could live with slow turning left and right and relying there on rolling but up and down is soooo slow, too.

That's on purpose. You may have noticed that you have to plan your maneuvers in advance and that aiming requires a lot of finesse, since you essentially aren't allowed to "move your viewport" 1:1.

You are experiencing decline withdrawal. It will pass with practice and experience.

Did you play Evochron Mercenary or I-War 2? Waaaay better flight mechanics which allow a lot more tactics / maneuvering.

I have Evochron in my Steam library, but never tried it. I remembering reading that it had an excellent combat system but that everything else was a bit lacking. Like the economic or trading aspect. This was a long time ago though, maybe the guy expanded on those elements since then?

He expanded on it but it's still lacking or better a bit off from what you would expect. Still worth trying.

You think E: D flying mechanics are better?

I think that Elite's flight mechanics are elegant and have an extremely high skill ceiling, one which I haven't reached (and will probably never reach), as evidenced by YouTube videos of fairly skilled pilots running circles around multiple full-AI enemies who are flying superior ships, let alone players flying superior ships.

It think that they can be aggravating, awkward, and difficult to get used to for quite some time if they don't click for you immediately.

I have the feeling I won't like the flying system in the future, either. I don't know it's just feeling too much like driving a bus around instead of flying in space. Very artificial and unreal for me. Maybe will give it another try between the holiday.

I think Evochron Mercenaries flight system / ship mechanics and the rest combined with the universe / trade / faction system / missions of E: D would have been the game I was really looking forward. It seems such a game is still not developed. Sigh, maybe one day...

"In the first of our major story events, the Emperor has been taken sick and six rivals are rising to take his place. Players will decide the fate of the Empire as they take sides in a conflict which threatens to push the entire galaxy to war. A new Emperor will rise, and you will decide who takes the throne. What comes next will be determined by player actions. Think of it like a soap opera or box set TV series, where you never know what your heroes or villains will do next. Here you can help (or hinder) them."

this sounds much worse than the dragon age npc "buy dlc to continue this quest".

I don't see how that follows at all. It's a storyline centerpiece with 6 different sides a player can choose from. Ultimately the side with the most aggregated support will win.

There is now a PC-exclusive cockpit-based starship piloting game featuring smooth performance, slick graphics, proper support for head tracking, proper support for HOTAS and other 6doF devices, excellent keybinding, quasi-Newtonian physics and, most importantly, excellent and nuanced flight and combat mechanics in which you can fight with or against your friends.

Some people are complaining about it.

Reflect on that for a minute or so. Let us observe a moment of silence for the regrettable loss of sanity and perspective that has occurred since the turn of the century.

Thats mostly true , but you forgot its completely devoid of any content. I'd like to be young again like you guys living in illusion like this, enjoying a very average game . Its like this for little kids when they are watching cartoons , or playing video games they are enjoying a lot more than they should , seeing things that arent there, their imagination filling the gap maybe . Unfortunatly this doesnt works for me , i have the feeling you already seen it all after a few day of play and they have not much to offer .

Well, I wouldn't want to return to the mental development of a 16- to 18-year-old, that's for sure. Bribing hobos to buy smokes and liquor, listening to shitty music, wearing nothing but Quicksilver and ETNIES t-shirts and hoodies, and fumbling around with country girls of dubious provenance in shit-tier small-town movie theaters is pretty much all I cared about back then.

...Actually, yes, I want to return to the mental development of a 16- to 18-year-old. It was a lot more fun. :rpgcodex:

By the time you're old like me, you won't care about excitement, magic, or enjoyment. Only minerals. More minerals. WE REQUIRE MORE MINERALS. And pylons, always additional pylons. YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS.

I don't get the "it doesn't have content" argument? Are you looking for a storyline? Because ED is not that kind of game. It's a sandboxy game, you have tons of misisons, 6 career to pursue, and yes you have to use your imagination to make up the story for yourself, but I don't see it as a problem.

Ah, the old LARPing excuse for games which fall short on content.

GB2SKYRIM
It is not an excuse, this game is simply not Wing Commander or Freespace, with a developed story. It's like complaining about a Civilization game not having enough content just because it doesn't have a story like Starcraft.
