Is your character Magician(wasn't changed to another one)? Was he always a magician? If so, this may be one of those things removed from the port(unintentionally, perhaps).

It's a Bishop, with the usual Mage Spell Up high mastery skill at a lower level, which is usual for the class.

I just started up Original to see if it's any different in that game, testing it with a character with 0% boosts, and then 150% using the Elemental Wand. It made no difference.

Only high mastery and EX skills affect the spell, it seems.

well, in the japanese wiki it says:

"To attack the entire enemy in the explosion of non-attribute
Magician only power rise by raising the attack attribute of Hikorikaminari."

now after googling hikorikaminari i found the following: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raijin

"Kaminari-sama: kaminari (雷, kaminari, thunder) and -sama (様, a Japanese honorific meaning "master")"

i assume that the hikori prefix refers specifically to Mage Spells Power Up+ ability, and the fragment "Magician only..." in the spells description can only lead us to assume that it only works if the character casting it is a Mage and not any other class.

it would make sense because Immoraliti only takes off 1/2 of the enemy's HP if the caster is a priest; if it is a bishop it takes of 1/4 and if it is a valkyrie or a lord it takes off 1/8 damage.

oh! i almost forgot: the other thing governing damange for ANY spell is INT. when i first entered Ibag's Tower and encountered the God-type enemy "Terror" (floating man-shape inside of a square crystal) he was the first enemy to cast Enterook Mista on my party and do 100-200 HP's worth of damage. This was immediately noteworthy for me because it had been at least 50 hours' worth of gaming since ANY enemy that used the spell on me dealt more than 50-80 damage.

after looking at Terror's stats in the bestiary i noticed two things: he has no elemental attack bonuses except dark attack; and second that his INT score was about 40. i couldn't find any other enemies with an INT score approaching that number with my current bestiary, so we can only assume it increases damage linearly, just like STR does for physical attacks and AC points do for damage-absorption.

i.e. 1 point of STR = 5% increase in damage dealt and 1 point less of AC = approx. the same 5% less damage taken. Polete the archer enemy (Thief Class) would deal 400-500 HP of damage on my -25 AC samurai, but then would deal only 300-350 damage on my ninja with -30 AC at that particular moment.

Correct. This also goes for the other games in the series. Though it's a good thing to look into even obvious things - did you know that for a bunch of queries about the game, only this thread pops up on google?

Take some Dove Bells with you, especially on 14F. Elvish Iron+Devil's Lapis, AP doesn't matter.
Dragons are starting to get more powerful. I just got through 16F and I'm getting Lufia 2 ancient cave vibes here.

I've also encountered the dreaded Stargazers, and like Polete-chan they attack four times per round+pursuit sweep. They deal twice as much damage, have Swallow Return, heal ~400 HP per round, and come in groups. They have little magic resist and unlike Polete are vulnerable to most ailments.

More findings:
-Blue wisps are weak to sleep (0% resist)
-Skillving is vulnerable to confusion (20%)
-Death Scythe are weak against elemental attacks (-20%), vulnerable to sleep (30%)
-Emerald Dragon is vulnerable to sleep (35%)
-Phoenix have perfect (100%) resist against every ailment, and summon buddies
-Archangels have low AC, heal 1200HP per turn, and autocast Immolarati at the end of every round...
-Status effect chance on spellcast is not affected by high mastery or anything besides monster resist (dice of fate show the rolls)

aweigh and Courtier, it's been pretty cool reading your posts. It almost made me want to pick the game back up again but it sounds like it's alternating between fun and torture. Anyway, really interesting stuff, thanks for posting it.

eric__s I'm surprised and glad to hear it. Let's hope the Elminage Original rerelease comes out in English on PC, because that game is so much more forgiving that even casuals players turned off by Gothic will be able to get into it.

I actually petrified and easily defeated the one in the picture, they're vulnerable to status ailments and so will seldom be able to assheat you for more than one turn

has anyone ever put to use the ex skill Level Drain? i don't think many enemies have 100% drain resistance.

also i have begun to think that the shaman is the secret uber-DPS'er for post-game because of his 8 charms. 8 attacks each with smithed 20%-30% chance to behead? that sounds amazing.

or find in the bestiary the status ailment the fucker who is giving you trouble is weak to and smith all 8 charms with petrify or sleep or confusion, etc. i wish i had a medal of power handy.

(i could hex edit the class into one of my characters via the save game but meh... it's not the same. game won't calculate shit correctly if you just swap the classes. medal of power is the thing. obviously i could insert MoP's into the Shoppe Inventory but that's lame)

really wanna try out a shaman spec'd specifically for 8-attack-disables.

Nearly every enemy in the game has at least 70% drain resistance, and it's an active skill that takes up a turn. I just tried it on those level 1 worms in the first dungeon. Failed 5/5 tries.

I have a shaman in reserve. They get really good main weapons on par with hunters, but only a few charms. Whether your shaman can do their 8 attacks really depends on how many Divine Charms you've found and sold to the shop. I had two, and accidentally broke one (tested effect for minor stat increase then saved). Think they drop in B4F-B6F of the Ancient Cave. You'll need to go hunting for ores too. Remember that Swallow Killer is an active, limited use skill (you get only 6 SP and it uses one). Needs an herbalist postgame, might be difficult to work it into your party composition.

I was just aimlessly wandering around the Cave of the Ancients, which I thought I had mapped completely, when my thief detected a secret door. Inside, a hooded man gave me something really interesting...

This or Labyrinth of Touhou 2? Played both last year, but lost saves with my system.
Elminage - somewhere after Royal Tomb and Labyrinth - around 9-10 floor.

Codex 2013 Codex 2014 PC RPG Website of the Year, 2015 Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire MCA Serpent in the Staglands Dead State Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 BattleTech Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
I'd say Labyrinth of Touhou for the battle system, encounter design, and large-scale party management and character building, this one for first-person Wizardry-like dungeon exploration and early Wizardry-like party building.

Too bad they decided to cut custom portraits out. I need to do all this work again.
