Codex Year of the Donut Serpent in the Staglands Dead State Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
here's the actual quote from the video:

"earlier in this month, at the beginning of it, I have rather suddenly quit my Encased gig....and so we just got into, uh well I had some conflict with the leader of the studio. He has decided to be very very rude to me in a public chat and y'know I am not taking no bull from anyone and I just couldn't care less! And I sorta, well, I'm not sure if I feel any shame, like logically speaking I understand that what I did was rather bad because you see it was like the month before release." then he goes on to talk about how it's a shame it comes out 5 days after WotR because "it's a 1/3 of [his] channel's income" and also releasing in the same month as diablo 2 remastered and gamedec

he continues saying he was demoralized by the release date: "I'm giving my best to make this RPG system nice...and you are giving me THIS kind of release date and you expecting loyalty after that?" says they should have delayed it another three months to not release near WotR and not worried about 'the haters' complaining about another delay or getting bad reviews from people tired of the delays.

quitting because he was butthurt about the release date but yeah people will tell you that he "got fired" because it fits their agenda....

Sheesh, what a big baby. You manage to score a gig as a designer on an RPG that gets picked up by a fairly major publisher and you can't suck it up for another month?

Consequence of this is that mole popper will get a bad rep and further employment will get harder and harder to land. Word always gets around about difficult employees.

Where did you get this idea? My impression was the opposite of hardcore.

I suppose that's what it's turned into now, but considering it was pitched as being heavily inspired by the likes of Fallout, the "hardcore" crowd seemed to be their initial target audience.

Check their original kickstarter campaign pitch if you need further citations.
I've read their kickstarter page and the most relevant I've found is combat system description which says "Encased combat is inspired by classic, tactical turn-based systems, with a grid overlay, action points, cover system, special abilities, various ammo and damage types, many different resistances, and more!" and the general description is "old-school isometric RPG". Also heavy hints at Fallout itself overall, obviously. But all of that doesn't necessarily mean "hardcore". Fallout wasn't a hardcore game, after all.

Now they have "A tactical si-fi RPG" and "A classic isometric RPG..." descriptions which doesn't mean much. I suppose even if they didn't scammed completely regarding combat (cover system and ammo types are missing) they did revise their target audience, yeah.

So what's the Codex opinion on this so far? The general features sound nice, but the specifics make it sound a bit like a complete Fallout clone?

Hey! Since I actually have an account...
Thanks to everyone who is following Encased. We're almost out there, hehe. I was following Codex in terms of news about Encased but had no time to engage more, unfortunately.

About Nerd. He is very talented, but his 'soft' skills are also a bit nonexistent which makes it a bit hard to work with him, but we managed for a while. Still, he did a whole bunch of stuff for the game, I think he has a huge influence on the final product in the end.

He indeed is not on the project anymore. I don't agree with the 'fired' case cause without talking to me about this situation he directly wrote to the studio operations head "what I need to sign to quit". I think this does not fit in the "fired" agenda. The reasons for conflict as we always do in this industry (we Russians honestly give less shit about being polite but still) I will sweep under the rug, but I believe that release date was the least (if existent at all) problem. It's not like I have nothing to say, it's just this industry standards say we need to be polite in public and smile

I will get back to work.
Cheers, Slava.

Any specific reason you decided to launch it one week after Wrath of the Righteous and one week before Gamedec?

Not trying to side with Nerd here(honestly I wasn't even aware of that situation with him and couldn't care less). It's just that for people from outside it seems like a nonsensical decision because it's clearly gonna hurt your sales.

Is it even up to them? Release dates are usually decided by the publisher (Koch in this case) and devs can't usually do much about it.

IMO, as someone previously said, people who like rpgs already have this game on their radar and will (probably) buy it regardless of P:WOTR.
Its a niche indie game from Eastern Europe devs, not a huge mainstream release.

It's funny because Koch are also publishing Wrath of the Righteous physical edition.

Most people here on the Codex, probably. Outside our bubble though, I doubt it. Once they're done with WOTR, they'll probably go for Gamedec.

All 3 games are niche products from indie devs by the way. The production values don't change that fact. They might have a slightly different player base(people who prefer sci-fi to classic fantasy) but being Isometric cRPGs, it definitely overlaps, and WOTR and Gamedec can afford losing many more players than Encased because their player count is/will be much bigger.

You do make a fair point, BUT, what is stopping someone from buying all of them and playing them in a certain order? IE i will buy WOTR but due to Owlcat being prone to bugs will wait a month and play Encased/Gamedec/Trudograd instead

After Kingmaker was barely playable for months after release, who's buying WotR before the new year?

The 30k+ concurrent players and the 500+ pages Codex pre-release thread and almost 100 page release thread suggest many people will.

People who have a backlog usually don't buy games at launch because of the higher price or simply because they don't feel like it's worth picking it up if you're not gonna play it immediately, unless it's at a discount.

True, but there are those with disposable income who buy it just for the feelgoodz and knowing you have it in your backlog. Also - backers.

There are those who spend thousands in a Kickstarter campaign. They are minority though. Only in expensive hobbies(like audiophilia) rich people are a majority.

So has anyone played any of the most recent EA build of this? If so, how are you feeling it has shaped up? Very much so hope it's going to turn out well and be a success for Dark Crystal Games. Always thought the setting was great, and the developer's hearts seem to be in the right place.
