The first one killed me before I even knew what was going on. The second time I saw one was by some NPCs with green names that were fighting stuff. The mutant charged at him and he shot his arm an boomed it from about 20 feet away. It was fun to watch. I then went in a building and tried to do the same thing but destroying the arm was a big problem :P First attempt I sniped him in the head from stealth and it did about 5% damage. Then he charged me and I sniped his arm with all my VATS points, but it was barely scratching him, he blew me to bits in slow mo. I reloaded and used my better weapon and managed to make him his blow up about 10 feet away. I will just go level up somewhere else or that place would end up draining my ammo. I still haven't fired my minigun yet. Up to about 400 rounds but I doubt that lasts long. Saving it for something big.

I love mines... Early in the game I found one of those weird alien looking mutants that mutates when it is injured and becomes stronger. None of my guns did shit so I tried a mine. Nearly made me deaf irl, took me by surprise. Blasted stuff all around, and blew the creature's legs off. Good stuff. Grenades not as good. :/ But ok. Molotovs, I love that the game has it but they seem pretty weak.

This game is so weird lol. And hard. But I kinda like it. I came across an enemy camp. Sniped the lookout, capped the dog that came. Then I sneaked in to finish off the others guys. But there is a huge Mirelurk Hunter (with a skull next to the name). It is massive. On my first attempt it ate me in no time. On my second attempt I sniped at it and it just ignored me, didn't even move. Just stayed on its rock right next to these guys encampment... Then the remaining guys in the camp instead of coming to kill me, they started shooting at it too. And it attacked them killed them all easily. One of them shouted, "You asshole! Just give up!" but he died in the middle of "up". Then it came after me again. I set a mine for it but it barely scratched. I unloaded with my best gun in its face, and even got a crit, the thing still ate me. Third attempt, minigun, even with crit, barely got it down to 70%.

I got the fucker. I used a Jet to slow time and get some good shots on him. And then I hid behind a tree and he mostly spat stuff at me which I dodged. I liked that I could queue up 3 shots with my double barrel shotgun in vats. So he uses both barrels then reloads and uses another. Then I could manually click it as soon as VATS ends.

This is what a family man, a veteran, a father, a husband, a son, and a war criminal looks like. Take a good look.

Commits war crimes against Canadians, wifed up a lawyer, destroys huge chunks of Boston.

Can we finally admit that Nate did nothing wrong?

I had a more interesting play. I killed a famous bad guy called Pyro, kind of uneventful. He killed me 3 times in a row, I kept reloading, in the end I sniped him in the head and he died with 1 hit. But then I had a much more interesting battle. I found a big factory surrounded by bad guys. I was determined to get in but I looked for lots of ways and couldn't find a way without them all coming at me. I was going to give up then some dogs or something must have attacked and they all left their positions to fight. So I sneaked in and set mines all over the place. Then when they got back, I sniped one and several came charging at me down a path I had several mines in. Some epic explosions and some nice sniping to finish them off. It caused a nearby truck to explode in a huuuge explosion. Then I heard another enemy behind the wall say, "Huh? Oh it's nothing, I must be paranoid." Then another guy laughs and says yep the Jet will do that to ya.

Silly game. Some fun moments though. p.s. Removing the explosives perk is a shame.

Glad to see my EQ bro finding out ways to have Fallout 4 be at least entertaining at times. That "Huh? Oh it's nothing, I must be paranoid" has been a Bethesda type thing for a good long time now. Always cracks me up. Their attempts at reactivity in the NPC's can have hilarious effects. The bottom part of the map has some great locations to explore. Automatron can prove to be quite fun. Building a robot companion is quite enjoyable.

:excellent:

Woot I just found an Explosives Bobblehead, +15% damage to explosives! They are my favorites :D It was an epic battle to clear the place out too.

It's interesting, the difference between Fallout 4 and Fallout New Vegas. Obviously, New Vegas has everything you need in a role-playing game. If you wanted to learn what Fallout was, or what an CRPG was, you could just play that game. It has fine characters (Mr. House is great) and an interesting story. It has an under-rated sense of restraint, there's little Bethesda humour in it.

Fallout 4 just feels so much more slick and approachable, however. Going back to FNV after F4 can take some getting used to. I wish there was an updated version that didn't revise the game, just improved the graphics. Maybe revive some content that was always meant to be there.

I also like the base building in Fallout 4. I like any activity where I can just fuck around without worrying about what I'm supposed to be doing. I didn't play the game as a distraught parent, just as someone who had 'old world blues' and wanted to recreate civilisation. Fallout 4 also has a nice big world to explore, while in FNV everything seems to orbit around the Lucky 38.

Playing a hundred or so hours of FNV always leaves me feeling fulfilled, however. It's like I've actually accomplished something. With pure Bethesda games, on the other hand, I always manage to clock hundreds of hours before I become completely over-stuffed (yet somehow also malnourished) and just quit cold-turkey.

I kind of like how Fallout 4 will let you create a character and then see her interact with other people. It helps to give the feeling that you're guiding your character in this world. But I also feel like this kind of game-play isn't really Fallout. It's Mass Effect, or Dragon Age. It also isn't Baldur's Gate (I'm looking at you, Larian.)

I like how Fallout New Vegas managed to continue the themes of Fallout 1 and 2. The Fallout series is like an old TV mini-series that covers a history of hundreds of years. Like Roots or Centennial.

In my mind the series works like this:

2077: End of the World

(2097: A Fallout Adventure —— Capitol Wasteland)
(2107: A Fallout Adventure —— The Commonwealth)

2177: Fallout: The Vault Dweller
2227: Fallout 2: The Chosen One
2277: Fallout 3: The Courier

I think this game is much better than what they usually make. So many improvements over the previous game. The locations are far better. I sniped a guy up on the crumbling freeway and couldn't see how to get up there to loot. Turns out you have to kill a bunch of raiders in a junkyard first and then lower a crane which lets you get onto the overpass. Stuff like that is what I always wanted from these games, they finally did a decent job. Interiors are better too. I liked the building layout where you meet resistance dudes early in game. You can't reach the top floor unless you go up all the other floors. And there's a shortcut if you can handle jumping across. They are making much better layouts. One dungeon I did earlier, it was a factory, and it was pretty big with a decent layout. And then there was a whole other area next to it which joined onto that building. A furnace building to work with the factory. So a dungeon within a dungeon. I liked that. I like that the roofs of important locations, factories etc, have guards patrolling as well as down below. That factory I raided, I couldn't even figure out how to get up there. I think it was only accessible from inside. I like the more intricate layouts. They've come a long way from the terrible copy paste Oblivion rectangle dungeons.

There are a lot more enemy types too finally. I just battled some weird sci fi creature that was like a cyborg that could blast me with lazer beam eyes. It was super strong. Also although the AI often sucks, at times it does a good job. When I sniped the guards at the junkyard, some guys came out to get me and one of them ran fast sideways. Hard to snipe someone when they are moving fast like that. He was also trying to flank me.

The guns are better too. Nice variety. Gun nuts must love this game, getting to peruse a huge list of weapons while the game is paused, to find the perfect tool for the job. I got a good selection now. Also I'm super strong now. Several levels and perks can make a huge difference. I pumped rifle shooting so now there are a lot of heads blowing up when I snipe them. I got the gun crafting upgrades perk too so now all my guns are tweaked to perfection. I'm kind of a big deal now.

I don't usually like crafting but they did a decent job of that too. Some of the gun upgrades can really change how they work. If you like a particular hand gun you can crank it's damage or fit a long barrel to give it more range or whatever you want from it. I was amazed you could even change the caliber of the gun. My sniper rifle is really strong now and it still had the option to upgrade it to a .40 cal :D The guns feel good to shoot too. Wild firing with a rifle has it jump around with recoil. Sniper rifles are much steadier. The crosshair even moves with breath and you can hold your breath to help aim... And they tied it to AP so you can't overdo it. They are finally making this series into what it should be! There were moments with good battles against AI where I felt like I was playing ArmA. Enemies now sprint for cover! And then they peak out and shoot from behind cover, just their head peaking out and their gun hand which you can try to snipe.

All these little things really add up.

Can't say I really hated the story. It's more of a story you have to experience and not re-tell it to anyone 'cuz things straight up sound retarded then.

There are tons of memorable moments and side quests in the game too. And if anything I'd say it's worth it to play the whole game just so that you can finish the Far Harbor DLC. Which has some really solid atmosphere and writing in it.

Down's (Syndrome): The core story is retarded. The writing is juvenile. Bethesda comedy <<< 'Wild Wasteland'. Perk/levelling is dumb. Enemies level scale. The old factions do things out of character and the new ones are just plain stupid. Minecraft (wtf?). C&C is very limited. The 'legendary' system is stupid. Basically too many MMORG and looter shooter elements and watered down RPG ones.
Upsides: Combat is fun....for a Bethesda title. The world is big and fun to explore. It's easy to burn hours in. Prettier than 3/NV.

A 2010 Obsidian or an Interplay could do so much with this engine.

I'm not really paying attention to the story and skip all the bad dialogue and bad characters. I do that in most games though. This seems on a par with others to me, but the start was really surprisingly bad. Lol.. Lets throw every cliche at the player in under 2 minutes? You have wife, you love wife! You even have baby! Notice how you and wife love baby? Life is perfect! Hey want to buy a nuclear bunker? Sure. News Alert, nuclear bomb is coming! Hey lets go to that bunker I just bought 1 second ago. Ok, now we will freeze for many years. Now we are awake, but wife is dead, and baby is gone! You must feel terrible about this huh? Good, we successfully engaged you in the story. Expert storywriters at Bethesda.

Quests I've done seem about on par with F3 or better. But pretty buggy even after all these years and updates. And I get the sense that the game needed more quests and creatures and stuff. I'll be glad if I can get a few weeks out of it though. Exploring and fighting stuff is mostly what you do and I never felt like they had that working right in any nu Fallout or Elder Scrolls. But this one I like much more. It's still not great but best I've seen from Bethesda. I haven't seen the space game though or Fallout 76.

The Settlement thing is ok. I felt bad for Abernathy Farm and I also wanted to make sure the dude didn't die because he was the only trader I knew. So I built them a generator and a sentry gun and some stuff. And it makes people join the settlement. Kinda nifty. Does it generate resources or something for you though? Seems like it could use an end goal to be worth doing. I cleared out a nice looking 50s style diner and noticed they had a workbench. I thought it would make a nice base but I couldn't be bothered to do all the goofy building. Maybe if it provided more as a reward. Needs more development though. Like, I think that farm never got attacked once. It had enemies when I arrived but none are roaming anywhere near there I think.

Your settlements get attacked later on and you have to defend them. You can also send some of your companions to a random settlement to defend it for you (you can later pick that companion from where you've send him). There was a whole storyline of quests for settlements too and I think it was ideal you develop that side of the game if you plan on going big with crafting. Shit was too boring for me tho. There were also a bunch of achievos for this too.

I played this game when it came out and gave up. But went back to it a few years later with some mods to make it into more of a survival game, a tent and campfire, recipes for food, you know the normal stuff. Then it was fun, leave the main quest as soon as you get out of the vault and go full-on murder hobo (I prefer to be Mad Max 2), there are some fun moments to be had.

As people have said, the dialogue and writing is so bad, but many of the maps work well and are interesting to explore. I had more than a few fun fights. It's not Fallout and hardly an RPG, but there is fun to be had exploring.

If you want a sandbox to play in, it works. I made camp on a rooftop near Diamond City and stalked everyone in the streets below, sneaking around in the dark looting dead Mutants and friendlies too, then back up to my eyrie to dick about with crafting. Good times.

I had another epic battle, reminded me of Icewind Dale. I just went in a building I came across and there was some serious shit going down. A set piece. A big 'named' guy tells one of his crew to shoot another guy. He doesn't want to do it but the boss threatens to kill his family. You get to try to intervene but I failed persuasion so he shot him. Then he says to kill the stranger and all 3 of them come at me. Usually if something is too hard I just go back later. But I thought I'd give this a go. Used some buffs that slow time etc. I had 25+ molotovs so threw a few to start the fight. Capped one guy fast. Second guy I got with VATS, then I popped a stimpack and rushed the boss. Took me a few reloads but it was fun. It only cost me 1 or 2 stimpacks and some ammo but I got far more from the bad guys. The character really gets a lot stronger all of a sudden.

Fun game, love the set piece battles like that.

I liked cleansing Boston with my Brotherhood homies.
The whole settlement system needed an option to claim locations for your faction, which is sort of what you do for Teagan, but no Brotherhood members actually spawn.
