I was actually surprised by how little effort they put into Piper, the other companion they try to push you the most, including promotional material.

She's the Intrepid Reporter trope and she runs a newspaper in a town of 50 people.
She's always in trouble because of it.
She wants to help innocent civilians.
She dislikes (formerly) bad karma stuff.

That's it. Not one flaw, no struggle, no depth, no goals, no internal conflict, no restrictions, no fears. Apparently she doesn't even have her own quest after the first one when you're introduced.

Yeah at some point I half expected 4 turtles and a rat to jump out of a manhole...

PS - she is super-annoying, but that's an integral part of the trope.

Funfact: One quest in Vault 81 has you choose between a kid dying or you having your hps permanently lowered by 10.

Is that even a choice? Is it supposed to be deep and moral and touchy-feely?
Actually, based on the descriptions it sounds like a pretty good choice for a Bethesda game, with both options being somewhat justifiable instead of just having to choose between "goody-two-shoes" and "lolevil".

Then again, we're talking about Bethesda here, so it's very likely that you'll want that kid to die as painfully as possible.

I was looking at the rest of the companions to see how many I've yet to recruit, and there's only Elvis Presley and Black Synth left. Then I looked back at FNV followers, and to say FO4 pales in comparison is an understatement.
I think there's plenty of subject matter for an in-depth comparison, if anybody wants to write about it.

Let's try to pair the "types":

Codsworth x ED-E
Piper x Cass
Danse x Boone
Strong x Lily
Preston x Arcade
Dogmeat x Rex
Hancock x Raul
Cait x Veronica

[FO4 has Nick Valentine, X688, Deacon and Curie as outliers]

I mean, It's not even fair.

It is entirely possible to make it through the vault without getting bitten by a mole rat. To do so it is highly advised to have power armor, no active companion following the Sole Survivor, have a weapon that has a high rate of fire or does damage in an area(ie: rocket launcher). Try to use objects around the Sole Survivor to hide behind or stand atop of. Players with hacking perk at level 2 and sneak at rank 4 will find this quest much easier than those without.

Yeah, no extra companion quest for Pipes was disappointing. Just lockpicking everything I see made her love me as well. No need to take her on quests, or talk to anyone. The legendary agility of your fingers is enough to fall for yo--- heh, now I get it.
I am not saying Cait is better, since all you have to do is fastraveling in circles while being naked, but at least she wants you to go to meet some nice ASSaultrons. Fuuuu.
But it's okay that way, at least it means I don't have to do radiant settler quests for hours if I pick on of them up after doing most quests.

Curry Ze Curie on the other hand.... is there anything you can do outside dialogs to increase her affection? I haven't found anything yet.
Thankfully some dialog choices during quests give a shitload of affection, but it's a metagaming pain in the ass.

How sickly ambitious do you have to be to savescum yourself through this just because of 10hp? Ah right, consoletards and their grinding archievements... forget I asked.

The character's popularity might also be due to the fact that Nick Valentine is the one character that Beth actually bothered actually putting some sort of decent "writing" effort into, apparently...

He's just the likeable private eye archetype is all. There is no good writing in F4 (there's a spark of a promise of something potentially non-drab in Deacon's personality but that's it). As a companion he's rather boring and bad at combat, with a completely useless perk.

Indeed he is. I guess my bias and penchant for anything even remotely noir kicked in. That said, the writing of his character does stand out as "decent", if compared to everything else I've seen so far (haven't met Deacon yet).

And, I'm keeping the dog as a companion. He's cute and kinda useful and his writing surely can't turn into disappointment.
I tool Lone Wanderer perk so I can only have the dog anyways. Although I have considered getting rid of him more than once because he loves to block my movement. But he also on occasion knocks enemies down and finishes off low hp enemies for me.

AFAIK Beth considers lone wanderer working with dawgmeat a bug, so don't get too comfortable there. But he can still carry more than Piper, so in future runs when I heared all the companions babbling I am going full dog as well.

As adorable and optimistic Curie V2.0 is, after hearing her telling me about the U.S.S. Constitushun for the 15th time am I sooooo fed up with her. Every time you enter/exit the shitty boat the line plays. It's worse than Lydia and the caves..

I want a mod where you can use KLEO as a companion. RoboLydders. More robot than I can handle and sworn to carry my burdens.

I thought the dog counted as a companion, towards the not-perceiving of the benefits from the lone wanderer perk... Gotta respec now. XD

I wanted to like Fallout 4, I really did. This game isn't for me.
this game isn't for anybody with a brain.
even non functioning brains apply.

If you are new to fallout and never heard anything about previous fallouts, Fallout4 is actually a good game.
And if its a very first video game you ever played and you are a mentally challenged 7 year old then it is a divine masterpiece, 10/10, an amazing RPG with tough moral dilemmas, complex role playing system, unforgettable characters and dialogues set in scary, brutal and grim post apocalyptic world.

Well I don't own Fo4 so they cannot force the patch on me. And to patch the game and lose him, I hope the patch at least brings in performance problems and some serious fixes to improve the game.

That's actually an important post, because his dismissal of Ghouls and Super Mutants as inherently ridiculous is a perfect window into his mindset. In the good Fallout games, Ghouls and Super Mutants make perfect sense within the game's own logical framework. FEV is an outlandish idea, as is the Unity, but they were depicted with such detail and explained so fully in Fallout that there was nothing unbelievable about them. To Pete, the Fallout world is effectively a psychedelic playground, a world where nothing need make sense so long as it's cool.

Re: Jet, I don't understand why they don't just say that "Jet" has somehow become the term used for all inhaled drugs.

It doesn't make all that much sense either, but it's the closest thing to making sense.

He's just a PR prick in charge of Bethesda's marketing, it'd be more important if it was Todd answering. He probably thinks the same, but it'd be good to hear it from him.
