Valve needs to set the downgrade version as the beta channel. They could have done this when FOLON dropped.

Fallout 1 fan-remake taps out just 2 months after it got a meaty demo, but promises it's not because of 'infighting' or Bethesda meddling

Fallout: Vault 13 is traipsing into the Wasteland for good.

It was just the other day that I told PCG writer Ted Litchfield that I want a whole game—Museum of Mechanics: Lockpicking-style—that lets me walk through the ruins of all the doomed fan attempts to remake old games in a modern engine. KOTOR's Apeiron, that Resident Evil 2 redo, innumerable attempts to remake GoldenEye without attracting Nintendo's baleful gaze: They all went the way of the Dodo, lost to time.

Alas, there's one more for the pile. Fallout: Vault 13 was a fan project that sought to rebuild the original Fallout 1 in the hi-res, first-person skin of Fallout 4, but now it's pretty much dead. It actually looked like it was moving along pretty well. Just two months ago it got a demo showing off some of the game's early areas that was very well-received. Not, generally, the kind of thing you expect of a project just a month or two away from throwing in the towel.

But that's exactly what it's done. In a message on Discord, Fallout: Vault 13 co-lead culinwino posted: "We have decided to officially suspend development on Fallout: Vault 13. This was not an easy decision, but we believe it is the right step at this stage of our journey. I know this may come as unexpected news, and we sincerely apologize for any disappointment it may cause."

Which is a bit of a bummer, but there's a silver lining. Culinwino says that "we will release a full build of Fallout: Vault 13 that includes all unfinished content" in the weeks to come, letting players root around the content that was already made and—just maybe—letting other modders pick up where the original team left off. It also sounds like the team has a kind of post-mortem in the works, promising "a retrospective that will take a look back at everything we’ve accomplished with Fallout: Vault 13, celebrating the highs, the lessons learned, and the passion that drove this project."

Which, if a project has to die, is probably the best way it can go. Plus, it sounds like the devs had good reason to pack things in. Despite the outward appearance of progress in the wake of the demo, culinwino says behind the scenes there was "burnout, difficulty in recruiting and retaining team members with niche skills, and personal life changes among core team members." They emphasise that the decision to call it quits wasn't due to "infighting" and there was no "cease and desist from Bethesda." It's just the way things shook out: "The decision was made to prioritize the well-being of project members."

Which is, I think, the correct decision. Still, if any team of passionate modders out there is hungry for a project, I wouldn't say no to someone else picking up the slack when culinwino and co release what they have so far.

Today, we couldn’t be happier to see the success that Fallout: London has become – reaching the entirety of 1 million owners on our platform, and achieving it on Fallout Day no less. We’d like to take this moment to wholeheartedly congratulate Team FOLON® on their groundbreaking record!

Yes, with reservations. Do you at least tolerate Bethesda Fallout? Can you deal with occasional bugs?
If yes, get the gog version and wait for current patch. Or, high seas.

Been playing FOLON and I must admit as far as slop goes this is pretty decent. It's still basically FO4, so meh, but at least the Bri'ish setting and free mod let me pretend its flavored a bit differently.
The mod is not exactly an attempt at improving the formula, it's the same deal but in a slightly altered setting. Even the old "everyone lives in filth" trope is alive and well. Fuck, people, if you're making food at least clean out the glowing mushrooms first...

Also my doggie freaks out when she sees Churchill on the monitor, lel

There are quite a lot of things it does better though. Apart from the main plotline there is a conflict basically in each neighbourhood and you can choose sides and sometimes even switch them and backstab your former allies. Some quests have numerous solutions based on your stats and perks.

I guess you haven't yet been admitted to Westminster? The Gentry enjoys pretty high standard of living, streets are clean, security officers are on every corner. Which is a reason for many of FOLON's antagonisms - rigid class structure and the willingness of other factions to get their piece of the pie.

Well, since you can eat glowing mushrooms, maybe others do it too? Who knows...

I'm playing FOLON on Survival atm and am really enjoying it. I wouldn't say it's hard but the debuffs, lack of weapons and gear makes it very opprsesive which fits the lab rat origin very well. Too bad the radio stations are so lackluster compared to FNV.

I really don't get the lack of weapons argument. Sure, I don't have a shitton of EVERY type of ammo, but always have enough bullets for my favorite gun (which I got from the thamesfolk), favorite sniper rifle and usually for the flamethrower too, which helps against the bosses. And when the combat gets too close for my taste, I also carry a really big poisonous claymore.

Scrounger is the first Perk I picked. I just got to the dog, I am debuffed into the ground and all I have is a switchblade.

You're right, Westminster is civilized. Although there's still rubble and hooligans around, which I found odd.

That said I'm about level 30 and feel like I've seen everything, despite not finishing any of the main quests. As I said, it's FO4 at heart and that means it gets tedious. The Perk system is just shit, there's barely anything interesting there. FOLON also seems to lack gear variety, I got the combat armor almost fully upgraded and that's pretty much the best I can get.

It's Over
That's Project Mojave, which has been over for a long time, since the "Early Access" build was released and its two main devs got jobs with Bethesda. This isn't exactly news, some other guy came along, did a little work here and there, but it was obvious the project wouldn't be going anywhere, making a whole new Vegas expansion for Fallout 4 ain't a one-man job.

The big ticket is Fallout 4: New Vegas, which was a recreation of NV on the Fo4 platform and got quite far along, but that's also been over for a long time except the devs still don't wanna call it. In fact, I think it's been over since the PM guys split off, but I don't have the details, there were rumours of drama there.
