FF 1 through infinity blows compared to Tactics.

Apples blow compared to oranges (and strawberries)

I actually agree with that sentiment. Just as I believe FF Tactics should have been a model for future installments of the franchise as opposed to what FF 12 did and whatever 13 tried to do. After all, most all FFs are turn based and what Tactics did were improvements all around. I also prefer its story above all others, though FF6s was a close second.

Delterius , have you played FF5?

One of the few I didn't play, but I am aware that there was a job system in it. Which is great, but when I'm talking about FF T I don't mean just that, rather the whole Tactics Ogre package.

Ah, okay. But other than the job system, there are no similarities between the main series and tactics, gameplaywise. So, I don't see how Tactics was an improvement. Rather something with quite different gameplay, I guess.

There are many reasons why I prefer FFT out of the whole franchise, and story is actually the main one. The power struggles over Ivalice were much more gripping than the traditional FF faire, including FF6 (which is a close second).

As far as the combat goes, I'm being purposedly obtuse -- the main series and FFT are very different experiences, true, and I can see why someone would like to draw a line between them. But I think that's foolish in the face of the many improvements that Tactics brought into the very simplified Turn Based combat of the series. Terrain types, elevation, cast times and asynchronous turns, etc and all this on top of the job system are nothing less than improvements. There's no spinning that.

If anything, looking back on how Square tried to change the series' gameplay after X -- the resurrection of the 'active turn based' in X-2; the somewhat lacking RTwP from FF 12 and the very lacking coaching from XIII -- makes me long for a new FFT. After all, if the simplified TB of old wasn't meant to stay that way then we might as well as focus on improving it. Well, at least Tactics Ogre is still alive.

The XIII "trilogy" has always struck me as odd: what is it about XIII that convinced Square-Enix to make two sequels to it? As far as I know, XIII is probably the most critically derisive game in the series, and each of the games have continued to sell less than the other, so it's not as though fan demand is the factor. Is it Lightning? Because from what I remember of her she's probably the least interesting main character in the series since Squall. The setting's hardly compelling, the rest of the cast isn't that interesting, so the only reason I can think of is that Toriyama is basically just forcing the series to continue out of either egotism or a fixation on Lightning and trying to prove to everyone how great she is.

FF12 was still firmly in ATB territory, except they cut out random battles and made them seamless as well as give you the ability to move around combat. I think they renamed the system ADB or something.

I suppose they wanted to release FF13 Versus between or instead but development of that took way too long than they planned.

Well, shit. I didn't expect this.
I had thought they'd port FFXIII, deem PC unprofitable since no one sane wants those games, then subsequently ditch the platform.

But this... sudden :incline: of Squeenix.

Supposedly, FF13 had horrendous mismanagement to the point where the teams were creating assets that didn't make it in the first game.

It was this pragmatic decision to make 2 more games to use their unused assets amongst other things. If you play 13-2 and 13-3, you'll notice a lot of asset reuse like the monsters. Heck 13-2 had a bunch of areas that are almost literally palette swaps of each other.

tl;dr: they spent too much money, needed to milk more with reused assets

Actually, much of the problems came from the console transition in regards to cutscenes. The expectations being so high that the cutscenes were done very early and the entire game being basically built around them.

Also XIII-2 was my favourite FF since IX.

Yes, seriously.

No it doesn't and you are dumb and stupid and childish and here's a 5,000 word essay explaining this in detail:
:pete:

Rahdulan , FF6 had a good translation. I've tried two different "purist" re-translation ROM hacks and they were nothing but weeaboo-cock sucking. At least Woolsey actually "localized" the games. Sure, there are a couple of items or espers named funnily but that's really not a big deal. He also did a really good job with Chrono's Trigger.

I tried the purist retranslation of Chrono Trigger and it was a pain to read. I wonder why Woolsey got so much negative criticism lately for his translated scripts for FF6 and CC when they just flow naturally. Yes, there is a bit of censorship but nothing major as far as I know — in Chrono Trigger the alcohol at the fair was replaced by soda. I know of one mistake in the CC script where Janus is refered to as Schala's half-brother while he her full-blood brother but that hardly impact the story in a meaningful way.

Woolsey isn't even responsible for the censorship, that's purely Nintendo America being fuckwits. Apparently his bosses gave him a really long list of things that couldn't be mentioned. Like chop shop for Shadowrun and Holy had to changed to Pearl and so on.

I think the worst thing about the weeaboo-"purist" translations (whether of games or comics) is the obsession with the honorifics and idioms. Even when characters are non-Japanese and events take place somewhere else. Fucking -sensei -chan -san -senpai placed fucking everywhere. But a proper translation is very difficult thing to do.

Oh yes, honorifics … It's not that hard to translate relationships in the tone used by people so the audience can just assume naturally how close or distant two characters are. One of the worst offenders of this I saw was in a an anthology animation movie called Peur(s) du Noir. One of the segments, written, animated and voiced by French people, takes place in rural Japan and of course honorifics fly here and there. It feels so unnatural …

Ok, your well constructed argument has convinced me that a game with weeaboo storyfaggotry and a rather restrictive class system is better than a game with a job system with myriads of options...
