Watched the 9 hour cut-scene version on youtube. Seems nice.

the thing that always irks me about those kind of sendups is that the joke depends on the audience thinking that geeks think their hobbies are important.

true geeks hate their hobbies because they hate themselves.

Kitase explaining Sephiroth's eariler appearance on Midgar in the remake.

https://square-enix-games.com/en_GB/news/final-fantasy-vii-remake-story-sephiroth
"You may not know this, but I was inspired by the movie Jaws which took a similar approach of teasing this powerful presence, but never fully showing you the shark until later in the story. We wanted to build him up as this really big, powerful character in people’s minds. By only referring to him indirectly, it created this feeling of fear and oppression – so when he makes his first appearance, it’s a big deal."

"But for the remake, that doesn’t work so well – partly because everybody knows who Sephiroth is (laughs)! We didn’t think it would be as effective to have him held back until later on in the story.

Secondly, Sephiroth is this massively overarching presence that looms over the whole FINAL FANTASY VII saga. We wanted to make sure that aspect of him was present in this first game in the project – that’s why we have introduced him much earlier in the story now."

By that logic, may as well show additional cutscenes of Aerith's death in Midgar as well since everyone knows the damn scene already.

Heck, why not show Yuffie and Vincent as well, spoiling the fun of knowing that the two are optional characters.

That is very reasonable from Kitase, though he missed the logical conclusion, which is "therefore, we chose not to make a blockbuster hyper-inflated remake of a 20 year old game."

It's apart of their culture or something. Their anime are like this as well. Coincidentally Japan has the highest rate of virgins and the lowest birth rate. It's almost like teaching kids from a young age to be afraid of sex, even if it's not serious and used for comic effect, still has a very real effect on the population. I suspect their women also aren't anywhere near as aggressive either.

It wasn't always so. Back in the 1980s-90s anime characters were often properly masculine and interested in women rather than inhuman permavirgins. Ranma 1/2 and Yu Yu Hakusho being good examples. It's part of why anime was always translated into Spanish/Portuguese and broadcast in South America.
Not sure that's true. At least with Yu Yu Hakusho I remember the guy being scared of his gf and although he proposed to her at the end of the show. He never appeared to have actually kissed her once as he was surprised when she kissed him in the final scene. Reminded me a bit of Chi Chi in DBZ and Bulma with the guys constantly being afraid of the girls and them always yelling. I also remember at least another one I watched as a kid where some guy had 3 women lusting after him but he never did anything. Only saw a few episodes of that but hat would have been 80s or 90s as well. Several anime shows were translated into English and on TV in the US, I just never knew they were Japanese cartoons until later.

It's just with the way people have changed over the past few decades in various views and ideas so rapidly, it's difficult to imagine television/media hasn't had a powerful effect on people's minds and culture. Especially if you grew up on this shit as an impressionable kid which almost everyone has done now.

In Yu Yu Hakusho the protagonist casually grabs his girlfriend's tits and lifts her skirt to check out her ass. She kisses him in the first couple episodes. They're recognized as being an 'item', people talk about them being in love, and when they're left alone people talk about leaving them to what guys and girls who like each other do when alone. All healthy, natural stuff. Ranma 1/2 is full enough of nudity and sexual content that the Americans only ever got a trimmed down, censored version(thankfully South America didn't work that way) . A couple years ago my wife watched a bit of Bleach to see what a much more recent anime is like, and it is a night and day difference. There isn't anything relatable in the way men and women interact in that stuff if you are from a healthy country, especially if you're older. It's really bizarre. The generational change-over is glow-in-the-dark.

You're absolutely right that media has an effect, but I think in the case of Japan a more serious cause of their newfound fear of cooties is their economy having been in recession for ~25 years. Women are aggressive, they aggressively want to get married and to have a baby put in them so they can trade in crushing wage-slavery in temp jobs for pushing a stroller in the park. For a man staring down the same fate with a couple additional dependents, it becomes unappetizing(just hit up the red light district) . That's if you can attract a woman at all with good salary-man jobs scarce on the ground(she can always just stay with her parents if nothing better comes around) .

Beat the game. I don't think they actually changed the story at all. The arbiters of fate are just a (extremely stupid) justification for having a proper boss fight at the end. Otherwise the end boss would be that six-wheeled mech on the freeway. They make about as much sense as Necron, and he's canon. Classic Final Fantasy. So everyone can stop hyperventilating over this already.

All the other scenes are just callbacks for fans/teasers for any new players. Heavy-handed and melodramatic, yes. Story ruined, no.

Took me 45 hours to beat. If you dick around a bit less, you could do it under 40. To get it done in 25 you would have to skip tons of content. That video review is completely full of shit.

Turn right after Alpha Centauri
My favorite thing about the remake has been watching the twitch streamer shills cry on camera, saying how emotional and deep the game is, while the same exact scenes have me laughing given how overacted, hamfisted and animu they are. Love it.

For me personally that is part of the charm of manga/anime, how over the top cranked up to 11 that shit is. Then again I do consider it a guilty pleasure and not my life unlike these weeaboos.

I will say one thing about the FF7 Remake. (Concerns opinions outside of the rpgcodex)

For years I considered FF7 waaaaay overrated and while I appreciated parts of the game I never considered it among the top tier of JRPG's or Final Fantasy Games. I have been called a hater and contrarian over several years on several parts of the internet and in RL as a consequence.

Now, in the span of less than a year, I've apparently become a FF7 purist and fanatic without changing my opinion at all. Even by some of the same people that considered me a *hater* before.

Shit's hilarious.

Japan really is just wannabe America. They pulled a Terminator on final fantasy. SEriously Terminator has like 4 can time travel remakequels. Now Final Fantasy time traveled back to 2004 to copy that dumb marketing strategy. Genius.

I bet it has to do with Avengers.
