That teaser demo was made many years ago only as a test to see if there would be interest for a remake. It was thrown away and has nothing in common with the actual remake.

Oh no doubt the playable teaser was terrible, apparently it was put together by 7 people in about 6 months and whoever was in charge misunderstood heavily what Gothic is. That is why all that work was scrapped. But it still showed (in number of downloads/views) that there is interest, so remake was greenlit with the feedback in mind.

The only thing that worries me is the "Unreal Engine 5" bit. UE5 is a unoptimized piece of shit that demands way too much and delivers way too little. Lords of the fallen(2023) in particular got fucked by that engine. The vignette effect that is in all the shots especially does not fill me with confidence.

I want this to be good but if this is another "DLSS mandatory" hack job the studio deserves to fail.

The edginess is amusing, but fact is, pretty much nobody who didn't play Gothic back in the day is ever gonna play it. Videogames have the distinct disadvantage of aging badly, especially early 3D ones. The remake is a chance for new generations of people to experience the greatness of the game (assuming it is well done). And for us retarded grognards it is a chance to experience it again after many years with improved graphics, playability and new content.

That said, yes there is an opportunity cost and maybe some new game or IP would be even better. Or maybe not. I will take what I can get.

Afaik LOTF has been fixed and runs well (although for me it ran well at launch too, on PC). There are UE games that run great (e.g. Robocop) so it is more of a matter of developer skill whether they know how to use it properly.
