I can't think of a single RPG that depicts sex in a healthy way.

I agree, sex should be reserved for sex havers.

To me the main reason to have romance in an RPG is to find out a bit extra about a character you like, once it tips into long-term committed relationship stuff like marriage or children it starts to feel awkward and uncomfortable so I'd rather avoid it.

That said I'd be fine with just cutting romance altogether and having more in depth friendship conversations where you can't be locked out for being the wrong sex/orientation, it's annoying that some RPGs seem to think you'd only want to know more about a character if you want to fuck them, you shouldn't have to jerk off your bro to find out his full backstory.

Nudity does not always mean eroticism, eroticism does not always mean sex. And in life, all these things go with other things. Life is filled with matters of sex.

An order to remove erotica is like an order to remove references to food. It's just unnatural.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
RPGs should be like a Conan story. You fight monsters, defeat the big bad, steal treasure, and shag beautiful women.

Of course, modern video games need to put in the beautiful women first.

Where are they? Oh, wait I see what you did there. Wow, times have really changed and my brain is still in the 90s it seems.

I think a great compromise would be having loads of nude babes in the games, but then they remove the romances which are actually more gay than any of the famous gay sex scenes that you can see in video games. Then everyone is happy, or at least I am.

Most people want to escape/evade the friendzone, your suggestion would make it obligatory.

I agree you should be able to bond with your followers regardless of their sex (should you wish to) while forging your camaraderie. But I'd leave the romances possible, while clearly limiting the romantic/sexual interests of the companions. They should certainly not be 'playersexual'. I think DAO did it best. You know/feel that Alistair and Morrigan are heterosexual while Leliana and Zevran swing both ways and the others are simply not interested. So, depending on the character you created, you can only work with what you have available. Also, the companions should not be too aggressive in pursuing their own romantic interests (unless their character justifies that).

Sex never was a problem in games, romances are. There is nothing wrong with PC killing monsters, looting treasures and shagging hot women. The problems start when you for some retarded reason add 10 hours of teenage drama to it.

Witcher 1 did it right, you kill uglies, fuck babes, 95% sexual encounters are just casual sex with random women, it's basically "You see that hot girl? You can climb her", no teenage drama, no bullshit sob stories. Pure testosterone-fueled classic male fantasy game. Based.

Of course tranny crowd complained about it, so to cater to them, in their next games they removed most of the random sex and instead added more and more romance drama, pure decline. As I always said, successful devs can't make good RPGs. That's why it's important to pirate prestigious games, keep the good devs poor, don't let the coin corrupt them. One taste is all it takes.

And perhaps violenceless?
Cool down Disco Elysium, this ain't about you.
It's not that.

I simply mock Ameritard approach according to which a game can have all the gore in the world and its ok, but a mere suggestion of sex is a big no no.

I think it was GRRM who said that a penis entering vagina is much more natural than an axe entering skull. Hence American priorities in this regard are pretty fucked up.

Alas, what can you expect from a country set up by guys calling themselves 'puritans'.

Here in Europe we've got a much more healthy approach.

Btw, there's plenty of violence in DE. You can even shoot a child, which was unheard of in gaming since the early Fallouts.
Yeah, this was true up until...maybe as late as 20 years ago. Now? Some states are veering towards authorizing child protective services to abduct your kid if you refuse to expose them to transgender indoctrination.

Romance in RPGs will always suck because your character is a blank slate, and you can't have a believable romance between an NPC with a defined personality and a self-insert avatar who has whatever personality you can imagine for him within the confines of the plot and dialogue options. There are no exceptions, either - you might thank that (for example) the Aerie romance in BG2 is well written or whatever, but it's not, you just want to fuck Aerie and your brain is filling in the blanks. That's okay, it's how video games are supposed to work, but that doesn't make the actual writing good.

RPGs where the MC has a more strongly defined personality can kinda make it work, sometimes. And of course the numbers argument also applies: writing is hard, writing romance is hard, and the people who can write both videogames and romance rarely overlap, and even when they do that person seldom has total control over the writing process and might have to balance what they want to put with the desires of a less capable team. So the rarity is not surprising.

In order to show people behaving naturally in a way that is true to life and somewhat positive, you have to be a mature, worldly person who likes people, who likes the natural world. This is where the famous Miyazaki quote that "anime was a mistake" came from. He was saying that as the people who increasingly make anime are more and more withdrawn and anti-human, it has lost its virtue as an artform which can capture truth.
Which is to say that for RPGs to capture friendship, love, sex or anything else was a tall order twenty years ago, and it isn't getting more likely.

Itoh is right that the only good examples I can think of depicting a relationship between a man and a woman are with predefined characters or don't involve the main character.

MotB has a beautiful romance with safiya, and its the only romance in rpgs i genuinely like. it is meanigfully interwoven with the plot. the plot itself is about love, and love - unfortunately for disfigured, socially inept, ugly - is the one and only worthwhile thing we can experience throughout our lives.
watching your character have sex in video game (it sounds humilating itself) is nothing more than a feast for sinful eyes. unless played for a joke with all details hidden, its a hollow, sad experience.
never pretend you are creating something meaningful, when you insert explicit fellatio scenes into your game...

Edit: fucking chicoms splitting the thread.
I can't think of a single RPG that depicts sex in a healthy way. It's never about two people in a committed relationship reproducing; it's either done for adolescent giggles or it's pornography for lonely people.

Violence, on the other hand, is usually depicted in a healthy way. It's shown as heroes stepping forth to rid the world of monsters and save the day. If we go with the idea that media influences human behaviour, this is actually behaviour that we want to promote and encourage.
Sex in video games is portrayed in a silly/pornographic manner because no normal person would play a video game to find fulfilling relationship content

If this is an actual concern for you guys, try spending less time on the computer.

Violence kills people. Sex can kill whole societies and cultures. I cite the 20th and 21st centuries as evidence.

That said, Shaki is precisely correct. Sex wasn't the poison, romance was. It diverted the experience from adventures to ego stroke and validating the player's emotions. That was the problem. It changed the fundamental experience. It's why the genre is now plagued with self-inserting losers who want to vicariously live through their PC rather play a game.

I will concede that sex in most games wasn't explicit outside of perhaps Witcher and Mass Effect. Even then it was mostly fade to black. If the brothels in BG2, NWN, and Arcanum had fully visual pornographic scenes, that would have been an issue.

It's possible to *not* includes sex in video games, which is why I started with that.

I do like the relationship with Annah in Planescape torment, it's a relation through time, experiences and aventure. At first, she even hates the nameless one when she first meets him.

You know, I always found it funny how the supposedly puritanical americans (and not just them) get offended by some broad showing her titties and ass and by the idea of nudity, but are A-Ok with someone getting their fucking skull split wide open and bombs blowing everything to smithereens.
Anyway, yeah, I agree with you. The vast majority of porn games are stupid and degenerate, either furry shit or some other disgusting shit. I have also yet to encounter a game that treats eroticism seriously, as you've said, sex in a really mature and realistic way. Shit, do we need background dice rolls, skill and attribute checks for that? Heh heh...
