next they will change the name of America to Pocahontia and you will gobble it up
Amerigo Vespucci was an evil white man and most likely a racist whose pamphlets led to exploitation and oppression of indigenous population, rise of slave trade and illegal enrichment of Europeans. Therefore, the continents shall be renamed as Northern and Southern Oogaboogia
I assume you were just kidding, but I ask anyway if this is even true?
It have no information that Vespucci was anything but a great scientist who studied the geography of the new world and came to the right conclusions before anyone else.
The outcome is fascinating because everyone believes Columbus should have received the honor but he fell inches short of the real discovery of America, which was unexpected and required hard evidence, not just a voyage to the nearest Caribbean island.
Columbus was one of the best navigators of all time, who correctly foresaw the westward route around the globe, was actually able to organize and complete the trip and discovered the Caribbean which naturally became the springboard to the subsequent discoveries in America. But he did not look for America but a route to India. Which ironically was blocked by his real discovery (America), a huge ocean (the Pacific) and that the globe was actually 40% larger than he thought.
It was a bit ridiculous though. His achievements as a navigator also made him a scientist and he came within inches of "discovering" the nature of the new continent himself. Had he just sailed a little bit longer on his trip along the Brazilian coast he would have found the gigantic Amazonas estuary and thereby established that he had navigated a continent and not just a big island. But he was not a very lucky man, burdened by his political ambitions and difficult character.
Vespucci on the other hand had the time, providence and ability to complete the work that was still necessary, not only on sailing voyages but also in the long scientific argument that ensued. Columbus had no time for that.
Btw Vasco Núñez de Balboa is largely forgotten, but he actually delivered the real proof by searching for, and seeing the Pacific as the first human from Europe. Unlike the two others he was merely a conquistador, but he had enough foresight to make sure that everyone else stayed behind so he could be the first (white) man who saw the Pacific, all alone. They should have actually named the Pacific after him, not after the deceptively "good" weather.
