The character models of FF7 have aged poorly, and the game falls off after the first disc. When people think of "FF7", what they are really thinking of is the dieselpunk dystopia of disc 1. There is a reason why all of the FF7 franchise stuff focuses on Midgar. No one's favorite memory is of meandering around aimlessly in disc 2. Later JRPGs have both better aesthetics and a more uniformly good experience that lasts beyond just the intro arc. FF10, Xenoblade 1, Trails of Cold Steel, etc. I would hesitate to recommend any of the PS1 FFs as your very first JRPG since all three of them fall off after a few hours in, but if I had to pick one then it would have to be FF9 since it's good for two discs and it looks the best. To be clear, they're not bad and they are worth playing, but they are not the best representation of the genre to newcomers nowadays.

Contrarian asf lol. And lol @ the dumbed down, ugly, feminized FF10 rec instead. Rewrite history and reality some more would you?

For the record, Midgar is my least favorite part of the game, because the gameplay is in training wheels phase. I like:

Optional exotic locations with lots of secrets or cool side content like Wutai, Under the Sea exploration or Cosmo Canyon.
Temple of the Ancients, Great Glacier and Northern Crater are epic dungeons, all three have a shot at top ten dungeons of RPGs (western included).
Gold Saucer is a fricken small-scale theme park built into a video game, even if a lot of it sucks that's still wild, impressive and memorable.

To name a few.

Later FF7 media is completely irrelevant. They focus on Midgar for a variety of reasons, none of which says anything as to the quality of the other 85% of the game.
As usual it's a case of storyfaggots, weirdos and edgelords shitting things up, unable to comprehend what is reality.

I hate ANY game that forces me to play as a crossdressing dude with spyke hair and oversized sword. If FF7 had character creation, would be better.

Crossdressing...why are you taking that seriously? It's a silly quick section of the game handled humorously and does not try to make any statement of any kind. It's a fricken joke. Other equally cool media has done the same. This was back when you could make fun of the subject.

Highly suspicious you have even played the game.

I dunno, I think doing various sidequests and fighting cool materia in disc 2/3 was my favourite part. Midgar is the best part of the setting, but it's the worst of the gameplay; you've got basically no options in how to kit out your party or where to go. It's a glorified movie and that influence on the genre was cancer. My favourite thing to do in jrpgs has always been trawling around on the world map looking for caves, towns, or anything else noteworthy that I haven't been sent to yet. Provided there are actually things to find that impact gameplay.

And besides Midgar, golden saucer was a cool place as well, and the reveal of Red XIII's father was pretty cool. All the generic villages were lame though.

Got bored and stopped playing.

My point remains, if someone mentions that don't like WRPGs because everything in Skyrim has no consequence, recommending a RPG with even less choice and consequence is silly. Just like recommending cloud or Van(ff12) to a guy that want to play as this :

So yes, for him, SMT-3 Nocturne is imo the best recommendation.

It's a glorified movie

YES!!!

I also think that is sad that FF7 popularized JRPGs, instead of the much superior Kingsfield franchise and Wizardry Franchise. So many Wizardry games have no English translation...

Officially outed yourself as 'tarded. Good job Cancermancer. Kings Field is mediocre and fully in the shadow of Ultima Underworld. The game design is mediocre, the production values are low, and it contributes almost nothing to the sub-genre of FP Real time Action RPG despite being one of the earliest. It's seriously like childs play next to other First Person games of the 90s, even other console games. It took From Software decades to make anything nearing greatness. Armored Core is jank. They ruined Tenchu. Kings Field is mediocre. They were slow on the ball miles behind the many legendary developers of the 90s, but smart enough to fill the gaping void left by all those movie games taking over the market in the late 2000s.

Midgar is very story-focused, though with still plenty gameplay merit often overlooked. Had you given the game the time and respect it deserves, you would have been treated to a proper game experience once the training wheels come off. But you gave up after 3% and robbed yourself of that and then go on to say stupid shit like Kings Field is "far superior". Go try the game again and be patient, it pays off.

Ah there we go, someone that isn't talking nonsense. Mostly. Unexpected source.

FF7 Midgar (4 hours, and roughly 5-10% of total game length) has more gameplay nuance than the entire first 8 hours of FF6. And lets not forget your beloved FF4 which pretty much never turns into a respectable game outside of its basic core challenge. I went looking for hidden content and it was rare to find shit. Any storyfag decline in JRPG starts long before FF7 with the likes of FF4, Chrono Trigger & Earthbound and in a more offensive way. Some kind of sad joke people try to lump the responsibility on to 7 when it's only the tutorial, whereas the entire length of something like Chrono Trigger is pure storyfag with zero gameplay worth talking about.

FF7 popular, therefore bad!

What a coincidence! I spent two hours forum-diving on the Codex yesterday to collect PS2 and PSX recommendations. I won't play all these in a hundred years, but gotta download those ISOs for safekeeping before they get taken down.

Maybe it helps.

Not disagreeing. But by merely not forcing me to play as Cloud, I consider them superior. Not a hard bar.

Among Final Fantasies, I would recommend trying 1, 2 and 5. Those seems to be the best ones imo.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
How tf is the FF7 remake so dissed in a jRPG section of all places? Does a chunk of the wider fandom hates it or is it just Codex being Codex?

Haven't played it, but from what I gather it is not really a remake and more of a sequel that changes the story, which is not what the fans originally wanted, so that might explain some of the hate

People complain about monetization, breaking the game in 4 chapters and about some story changes. Also censorship of Tifa's breasts.

But FF7 is trash. Go play SMT-3 Nocturne, the best JRPG that I played. Cool story, amazing dungeon design, amazing encounter design, amazing turn based combat...

NPC-brained way to look at complex multimedia,

Nope. Pick Baldur's Gate 2. My favorite game of all time.

If BG2 forced me to play as "Cloud" would suddenly become unplayable.

Not using the protagonists to criticize JRPGs more because WRPGs has protagonists like >

It's also just pretty shit in it's own right. It looks pretty, but it's got a ton of shitty filler to pad it out, ranging from sidequests to collect 10 widgets for children or whatever, to dozens of 'cinematic' spots where you have to shimmy through a narrow passageway or climb a ladder painfully slowly just to reach a dead end and backtrack through it. Combat is boring and drawn out, character customization is bland and shallow, and the story is some sort of nonsensical garbage involving time travel in a retarded, arbitrary way.

Aside from any other changes to the story, characterization, or gameplay, Squaresoft somehow transformed a 40-hour JRPG into a series of at least three games, which necessarily implies that the developers have bloated the game with extraneous content. :M

Which could be a good thing in theory, if the new content was good, but it's not. Full of filler, fluff, busywork and ultra-cringe. That there are people out there that think it is good including some fans of the original just blows me away.

"Old thing gooood, new thing baaad!" is standard Codex procedure, plus a lot of brainlets got filtered by the marketing bait & switch and couldn't handle the fact that it was a totally new game rather than a remake.

Let me straight up tell you:
The game starts the same, but after the first hour the villain appears where he shouldn't and he has *literally* read the script and is here to fucking change to story of the entire game, because he is suddenly aware of the multiverse.
To stop him, we have a swarm of dementors that force the characters to stop breaking continuity and literally push them into the ''correct'' direction.
They grabbed the first 5 hours of FF7 and somehow stretched them to an absurd 50+, by wasting your time in the most extreme ways possible.
And all of that, is without getting into any spoilers. The ''remake'' part of the name doesn't mean that the game is a remake.

Can't commend on FF's because they seem to have a TB but not really approach to combat so I never played them. But if we are still pitching games I'd like to suggest the first 2 Golden Suns. Quality games in my opinion who's only major flaw is the UNSKIPPABLE dialogue dumps the game likes to throw at you. Other than that major drawback the gameplay is fun, definatly weeb but your not running around with a team of loli's, no need to grind but there will be plenty of random encounters unfortunatly. And quite the focus on environmental magic puzzles which I quite liked. They are not very hard but are what I'd personally consider classic JRPG in setup, and my first experience with the genre if you don't count Pokemon games.

I don't hate anime as such, just the modern pedo variety. I actually love the older anime movies from Ghibli or the early Ghost in the Shell movies. And I liked Vinland Saga too. Is there a Vinland Saga-inspired jRPG? I'd play the shit out of it.
If your problem is with more recent trends in Jap entertainment, then I think you can play most JRPGs from before 2000, and some in the few years after, without encountering these issues. Whether they're otherwise worth playing is a different story. 90s Square is a safe bet, though imo their output started faltering in quality once FF8 came out. I've only put a few hours into the 7th entry of Dragon Quest, but it was pretty good up until i got lost. Valkyrie Profile 1 rocks. Excepting Persona, everything SMT related in the 00s was damn good. the DDS duology and Devil Survivor 1 in particular are worth a shot (an aside, I'd be weary of Atlus's DS-to-3DS ports, they often inserted P2W DLC into the games and then messed with the game balancing to move sales of said DLC). While I haven't played many of them, there's a ton of JP-only Fantasy/Dark Fantasy JRPGs for the SNES, Genesis and so on that have gotten fan TLs over the years. You may find the likes of Tales of Phantasia (also has PSX port, far cry from the weebery of its successors btw), Dark Law, Mystic Ark, the Langrisser series (do not under any circumstances play Langrisser 1+2), and etc. to be at least close to what you're looking for.
I'm surprised no one mentioned Koudelka, an anti–weeb JRPG (Shadow Hearts series, Koudelka's sequels, are weeb as fuck though)

Koudelka is an interesting game, but not necessarily a good one. Its massively handicapped by the devs' decision to slap a boring/time-wasting/tension-killing/etc. battle system onto what was supposed to be a survival horror game, rather than figure out how to program NPC interactions. That being said, the "fluff" (everything other than the gameplay) of the game is immensely inspired, and it's short enough that it's worth playing once, if there's nothing better to do. Another game like this would be Terranigma, in that case a lot of the devs' ambition was hampered by technical limitations. Beautiful game though.
I'd also like to warn all longtime jRPGs fans that I'm just a vanguard of a vast army of wRPG nerds who are currently being routed from the genre by screeching fat purple-hair vegan landwhales and zero-T soyed male devs who WILL keep cramming empowered black wahmen into western RPGs until nothing but rubble and tumbleweed remains.

You don't accept immigrants? Well tough, your cute snug niche will be like that small American town overrun with Haitian dindus very soon.
To be honest JRPGs have suffered the same kind of decline western games have, but instead of taking up tumblr politics and antagonizing their would-be customers [to cover up how shitty the games are] JRPG devs went girl crazy (and started ripping off whatever LNs were trendy at the time). Course their partners in the West would rather the Japs be more like them, as previously discussed.

Can't commend on FF's because they seem to have a TB but not really approach to combat so I never played them.
Final Fantasy IV adopted an "Active Time Battle System", which is functionally the same turn-based, Wizardry-like combat except now with timers determining when the PCs and enemies individually act (and the player can suffer adverse consequences from delaying too long in selecting a character's input); this system was employed in the next five Final Fantasies. FF X returned to fully turn-based combat, FF XI was an MMORPG (as is FF XIV), and the later games all imitated different real-time combat systems.

Ah I thought it was more degenerate than that, requiring RL input during your TB actions. Makes it less bad but the games don't seem all that interesting to me anyway. I genreally don't play for plot and gameplay seems so-so.

The game does open up after Midgar and becomes enjoyable.

Replaying it years ago, though, I was struck by how poorly put together the story/plot is with very bad world building slapped on to make it worse.

The pacing is bad where the heart of the game is the journey from Midgar to the northern crater.

I think the main thing the game does it evoke the imagination, especially in fleshing out Midgar more, but all attempts afterwards by Square to do so have failed because nothing can compare to what has been imagined by people.

How tf is the FF7 remake so dissed in a jRPG section of all places? Does a chunk of the wider fandom hates it or is it just Codex being Codex?
People wanted the game redone with an enlargened scale, to show that which the PSX couldn't show back in the day.

Instead of a strict remake, they used the story to make their own story that no one wanted.
