Ironically, Icewind Dale released at the end of June 2000, and was as a refreshing way to pass the summer.
I got into IWD because i read at that time book called "The Crystal Shard". Story was similar to the one in the game so i got really hooked. :)

Main requirement for IWD character is INT < 12. < 8 INT characters are preferred.

The game should calculate sum of INT of all characters in the party, and create some check for story branching.
High intelligent party would side with Chimera because immigration is bad, low average INT party would do normal lame duck story.
