This "only WE know what's best for players" mentality is ridiculous beyond reason. Why not do it both ways? Egotripping motherfuckers.

We knew when we announced our intention to modernize the combat system in JA2:R that we would spark off a heated discussion. However, we are shocked at the way this discussion is being conducted in the forums. It is extremely useful for us to hear the honest opinions of all the members of the forum, but personal insults, slander and abuse have no place in this forum and are totally unacceptable. Our aim was and is to engage in an objective and mutually respectful discussion. We are ready to listen to all proposals, wishes and complaints, but we would ask you for objective comments, even though the subject has clearly aroused some strong emotions in certain forum participants.
We have of course been thinking long and hard of how to optimize the combat system. With a new edition of such a closely monitored and universally loved title as this, we would not satisfy the players’ demands were we to merely change the graphics while ignoring the other aspects of the game.
Our objective was and is to modernize both the both the look and feel of the game to live up to the expectations of a contemporary title. With this in mind, we have of course also scrutinized the combat system to assess how here too we can produce an up-to-date adaptation and version. This has not happened without first having an intense exchange of opinion with fans and enthusiasts of the genre. In this respect, we have also looked closely at the later developments in classic games such as the Fallout series for example. As opinions differ wildly, we regret we won’t be able to please everyone. However, we believe the changes to the combat system will make the gameplay much more accessible, intuitive and up-to-date, while retaining the elements that have marked out JA2 as special.
We assume you would like your input to have some influence on the development of JA2:R and are still keen to receive your support in the form of constructive and objective contributions and comments. Once the new combat system has been reworked, we will give forum members the opportunity to test the game flow. More info to follow shortly.
Best wishes until then

I wonder if they really think the original Fallouts' fanbase welcomed Fallout 3 and its shitty combat system. Seeing as the only people who give (gave?) a shit about JA2-Reloaded were the original JA/JA2 fans.hoverdog said:oh for fuck sakeIn this respect, we have also looked closely at the later developments in classic games such as the Fallout series for example.
They are obviously under the impression that the market for a non-turnbased JA2 is somehow so much bigger than the market for a turnbased JA2, that the "old" fans don't matter at all.Reconite said:I wonder if they really think the original Fallouts' fanbase welcomed Fallout 3 and its shitty combat system. Also, SA only has a couple of pages of reactions to Reloaded in their JA2 general thread so far, I'm a bit surprised, I expected more outrage.# The Jagged Alliance series achieved numerous awards and is considered to date as milestone in the genre of real time strategy

Fallout 3 was a much better game than JA2, so I can dig this change.

I'm not sure if there is such as thing as a good turn based game in this day and age. Now that modern CPUs can handle multiple characters moving at once, what use could you get from breaking all your actions into constant, repetitive clickfests? Turn based games are like Diablo 2 without the cool spell effects.
There's no reason for the 'XCOM' style games to be any better turn based at all, especially as once you reach a certain size the system just breaks down. The old games were turn based for technical limits and those in turn put limits on the gameplay that don't need to exist anymore.
this is all awesome and exactly what I would write in a design document for a new JA/XCOM style game.
Turn Based systems just can't capture the essence of a firefight in the way that WEGO/Real Time systems can.
I know that some older gamers think that the turn based combat was tolerable in JA2, but for most people it was by far the biggest flaw of the franchise, and SirTech went bankrupt over it. This is a 100% positive change, and it has the potential to transform a good, but dated game into an all-time classic.
JA2 is an ugly ugly game with ugly gameplay so anything they can do to make it a little less ugly is good I feel. I play JA2 for the mercs and the insane attention to detail when it comes too how stats and merc interaction works.
Looks like they got the full rights, otherwise they couldn't do things like these:
Außerdem wurden bei den Charakteren einige Dinge entfernt, die recht rassistisch waren und heute möglicherweise anstoßend wirken.
"We removed some things about the characters which were rather racist and might seem repugnant nowadays."
The people at Sirtech always seemed to have a problem with niggers and wetbacks, so this change is good with me.
