plstkme-blog asked:
Is there a particular difficulty you consider "canon" in the PoE series? Like how Bungie said that Heroic was the canon difficulty for their Halo games.

Nah.
Not even the one with his face on the achievement icon?

feel like we're at the point where this stuff(i believe tvtropes called it 'Dear Diary Today I Died") is included mainly for purposes of a wink wink joke and for tradition. I always associate it with Lovecraftt stories though. Bro is literally penning a letter as a monster is knocking at his door.
Clearly inspired by Gandalf reading the book on the last days of Moria as the Fellowship was travelling there, so I'll allow it.

shin-bnang asked:
Do you have any insight about what was going on at Sega when Alpha Protocol was supposed to come out? I remember waiting for it to unlock on Steam and then (probably the next morning) finally learning that the release was pushed back several months. I can't remember any other instances of such a major failure to communicate from a publisher.

Uh... idk, to be honest. I only worked on AP for a little while (the CQC system), years before it came out. Around the time that AP came out, we were in full production on Fallout: New Vegas so I don't remember the details. Sorry!

I don't know why Obsidian is still a thing honestly.

All of the chances they were given and really, how many truly good titles came out of it? New Vegas and what else?
Obsidian's purpose was ultimately to serve as a vast sink of talent, able to achieve commercial success only when putting creative, capable individuals to work on sequels re-using game engines developed by other companies with existing IP handed to them. These talented developers would have been generated a greater quantity of superior output if they had struck out on their own, or at least found work at better employers.

sergeantaegis asked:
When coming up with skills/perks/traits/feats/whatever for a game, do you deliberately try to make sure they're all balanced/viable or do you leave some there for more casual players who don't care for optimization/want to focus on roleplaying (or are just left there as schmuck bait)? Do unbalanced skills (ex: one perk being fairly useless) just come from time running out on balancing the game's mechanics? Ex: perks and traits in Fallout 1 and 2 that affected radiation resistance, when radiation was a fairly marginal mechanic to begin with. I hope this question makes sense in words because it made sense in my head lol.

I do my best to make all options balanced (given a specific style of play) for the player. I do not believe in intentionally including obviously superior or "trap" options. People who do are my ideological enemies, forever.

if you strive for balance across the board, shouldn't there be balance when it comes to... balancing?

sergeantaegis asked:
Did your skills in German (and to a lesser extent, French and Spanish) ever come up in your professional career? (For instance, being the "go-to guy" at Obsidian for communicating with customers or partners in Germany).

I am the "go-to guy" for spot-checking German localization but I'm not a native speaker so I miss a lot of things. That said, I have caught some flagrant issues (e.g. strings mixed up, wrong understanding of context, lacking a gender-specific string when addressing a character of variable gender). Still not a good replacement for a native speaker.

I've also done spot checking in French and Spanish localizations but my skills there are much poorer. Again, only helpful for catching errors that someone with even basic skills would notice.

It's never been necessary for me to speak to business partners in Germany because they've always been highly fluent in English. When demoing Pentiment at Gamescom I did speak German to some of the younger players because they weren't as confident in their English skills and it was easier to just use German.

It also came up in English-language interviews for the German markets as a parlor trick because it's uncommon for Americans to learn much German. So I'd say like, two sentences in German and we'd laugh and go back to English.

krisweitz asked:
Hi Josh "Pentiment" fan here :) Just wondering…and no pressure intended with this question haha… What's next after "Pentiment"? Are you planning on continuing doing your own games?

I have a little while to think about it. What's most important to me is that it's something I'm really passionate about and that my leads are passionate about (even if it takes some convincing).
I'm not that concerned about it being a big project or small project as long as I/we believe we can execute on the ideas we have.

I think hardcore RPGs with a multi-player co-op component are insanely dull and a waste of resources, but we will be required to have one for Van Buren. I know there are eight people out there who will play through 1/10th of the game as a novelty and then abandon it, but oh well.

Over 10 years later and Swen would prove him terribly wrong on all counts and show him how it's done (not dull, not a waste of resources, a lot of people played it).

That's because DOS actually took the cooperative part seriously. The game is built around characters having compatible skillsets. Most rpgs with coop just have it to help you mow down enemies faster than usual.

Read through the GQ list if you want an aneurysm. Even when consulting "experts", it's still fucking terrible.

Sawyer's Top 10:

1. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory 2. Ninja Gaiden (XBOX) 3. Quake 4. Fallout 5. Journey 6. Half-Life 2 7. The Bard’s Tale 8. Ultima IV 9. Elden Ring 10. HITMAN: World of Assassination

Transparent attempt to harness old-school credibility by including The Bard's Tale and Ultima IV late in the list. :rpgcodex:

Is Josh Sawyer actually a cuckold? I've seen that said before and it's often stressed that it's not just figurative.

Well... Josh observed how Avellone was owned and de-ownered by Feargus. Perhaps Josh was jerking off while this was going on. You can draw your own conclusions.
