The only technologies that are worthwhile to use separately from base-building are the training dummies for melee attack, assassination, thievery (easy to improve by stealing, though), and lockpicking (also easy to improve). You can build certain crafting stations inside city houses, but you'll need to purchase most inputs for them without a base to supply these inputs from mining, farming, and manufacturing, and it's probably more trouble than it's worth to make things for yourself rather than buying or stealing them.

Got ya. So research until I can build training implements, then wait until I decide to build a base sometime down the line for things like smithing.

leveling armor smith is pretty easy and doable earlier, if you can hunt lots of animal skins, you can level by only crafting leather and eventually new armors for your crew at every new quality tier or just to burn some leather and fabric (this you can buy from shops)

So why am I not getting any faction points by dropping off unconscious Holy Nation Outlaws into the Holy Order cells? The king or whatever told me this is work I can do for him but I'm not seeing anything for it. Do I have to do something special to trigger getting bonus faction points?

I'm not sure who you are picking up but for outlaws who have bounties on them, you have to go into a police station and hand over the prisoner. You get the bounty and a (usually small) reputation gain with the given faction. Look for buildings that have a sheriff's badge marking on them and/or a faction symbol on the outside.

I was just doing as the king said, taking heretics and bringing them to him. In Stack. I'd throw them in the prisoner pen but I guess they have to have a bounty on them? I was just taking Holy Nation Outlaws to the prisons and throwing them in. :P

Sorry for the triple post, but also, I bought a robotic arm because my arm was almost falling off (bleeding and at -88 and falling fast). How do you attach it? And does someone sell backpacks?

Would everyone agree researching tech is worth it?

I've played for a pretty long time without doing any research or base building and have been selling all that stuff off as I get it. I've had no problems getting high end weapons for my squad of 17. Armor is another story. Most of my stuff is Specialist or High quality but I have some Standard gear too and only one Masterwork piece. I hear there is a secret high end armor store that I haven't been to yet but due to the randomness of vendor inventory, I only expect it to help a little bit. Upgrading armor piece by piece on a large squad through vendors gets expensive and the gains tend to be small.

I don't know anything about crafting but from the perspective of someone who has been playing without it, I would say armor crafting will pay the higher dividends because weapons are so easy to just buy and armor is much more diverse and specialized.

I'm still not going to craft. Just waiting for the point where my squad can take down five or so spider sentries without getting wiped and then I'm gonna loot the shit out of every lost armory I can find and hope that works out.

below the button Backpack in the inventory there is a button for prosthetics limbs and you can change them freely.

In Stack and Squin you have shops with the icon with a guy holding a stick, you can buy backpacks there.

Limbs is greyed out and I can't click it though.

And do the bounties get marked on your map? What was the king meaning when he said to bring heretics to him, is that the bounties he's talking about?

I haven't worked for the Holy Nation because many members of my party are considered undesirables. Maybe they do want you to bring these people in. Bring them to the police station/faction HQ and find out.

And how do you locate the outlaws after you buy the bounty?

All the ones I've found are in a base of one kind or another. The bounty will tell you what region the outlaw is in and then you need to find the base.

Edit: Also, you don't need to buy the bounty first. If you find someone with a bounty on them, it will show next to their name when you inspect them. Just have to make sure you bring them to a faction that wants them.

Edit 2: Also, unnamed Dust Bandit Bosses (not to be confused with the Dust King) have a small bounty on them but are not on any wanted posters. Not sure if other bandit factions have similar counterparts. These are just generic bandits who are a little more skilled and have slightly better gear.

What Ironmonk said about buying backpacks/replacing limbs. But also, the limb has to be gone in order for you to replace it. A limb with a big negative score is not gone, it is just badly wounded and possibly bleeding you out. You will notice when a limb is gone and the health meter for that limb will have all Xs across it.

Got it, thanks.

I brought the outlaws to the Faction HQ (which is the place with the faction symbols outside and prisoner cages inside, and the king is there, too, right?) but putting them in the cages didn't do anything, and the king just had the same dialogue as usual, "bring me heretics if you want to help". Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

The fact that you buy a bounty just means you have the Wanted poster with you to read its description. You have to find them on your own with whatever directions the paper gives you or by chance while exploring the world. You beat the target, pick it up then take it to the police station of whatever faction wants it.

You won't be able to replace a limb unless this one is completely cut from your body, which would require receiving a lot of damage with a single hit on said limb. Otherwise it's just heavily wounded and you need to rest on a bed to let it recover, using split kits help you recover some mobility on it but that's about it. As mentioned before, the stores with a guy and backpack tend to sell backpacks and maps.

The bounties don't get any quest mark, you must find them from the description or while exploring. I assume the Phoenix meant the likes of Molly or whatever, and not to bring literally anyone.

Assuming you have someone they want, you need to talk to someone while carrying the outlaw and they will take the outlaw from you and pay you. Every time I've done it, the person I needed to talk to was the one hanging out closest to the front door of the station.

Wandering the world randomly in search of maps
I wish I had given in and become a thief before wasting all that time mining. Ah well.

If I started a new game, I would go to Squin and World's End and loot the weapon shops. The trick is to have a buddy with a heavy backpack outside (or pack bull) to dump the items onto. You make 40k+ a trip easy. Just sell the weapons you loot from one shop to the other.

It does take a bit of savescumming to get your thievery skill high enough to swipe the items safely but it's way easier and quicker than the tedium of mining and trying to keep a dozen people fed from store-bought food.

Curious as to what others did for the early game grind as far as leveling combat skills.

The best I found was hanging out by the Hive village closest to the Hub. Lure a gorillo in to the center of the village and take him out with the Hive soldiers. The gorillos last longer than Hungry Bandits do versus town guards so as long as you engage before they get completely surrounded, you can get your shots in and train your guys. They are considered much more powerful than noob characters so that helps with the leveling. If you go down, the Hive bros will even heal you up. Sometimes you get the odd bonedog too. Saw dead beak things there once but I think they chased a caravan in from somewhere else. Hive doesn't give a shit about you looting anything they kill and they pay well for animal skins.

Hive certainly gives a shit if you loot their fallen dead from the battle. But yeah, that place was nuts, there were beaked creatures coming in everywhere, those giant brontosauruses, and gorillas. Slave traders too. But the Hive bros took em out for me while I collected the spoils. Was fun.

I'm having an issue with the game crashing a lot. Anyway to stop that from happening?

Which station though? I saw a Barracks I wasn't allowed to enter, and the prison/slave area where the king dude was. Talking to him didn't do anything while I was carrying the outlaws. No clue. I was throwing them in prisons left and right and nothing was happening.

I don't know what they look like in Holy Nation cities. For the other factions, sometimes they are large towers (big round buildings) with sheriff badge logos painted on them. Sometimes they are just small towers with the faction logo hanging by the door. I imagine it is the same in the Holy Nation but I'm not certain.

As far as the game crashing, I was having issues with the occasional crash and every time I exited the game, it would crash instead of closing down. The issue is fixed now and I think it was a recent Windows 10 update that did it. So if you haven't updated Windows in a while, try that.

Can you build training dummies and train your combat skills with them? How do I unlock more stuff to build?

Gotta build up the research benches and research training dummies. Under building they have own category.

You get to work up 10 points per rank for things like thievery and lockpicking for a max of 30, while the martial dummy only gives 5 for 15 total.

It's a nice boost to get your guys started.

Also, you can using faction dummies, like the dummies at police stations and get them to aggro and beat you up before dumping you outside so you can work up defence and toughness too (just be careful of dismemberments).

What do you mean by build up the research benches? I have 2 outposts and a research bench in each one, but I can't research much of anything. Do I need blueprints?
