Okay, I think I've had enough of this. Chapter 3 is a brick wall. I'm restarting with a different party.

*laughs hysterically in kobold*

Fights with the black dragon wizard go like this, mass frailty, mass hold, crqash boom bam. I can clear most of his friends except the super psychic treant, but by then half the party is dead and held and the dragon himself is all but untouchable. The white dragon and the frost giants go like this, celerity x4, breath weapon, held, trip, grapple, kaboom! Leaving my poor little gladiator all by herself to deal with an army of giants. She's good, but not that good.

If I had to do over I think I would roll 2 gladiators, a psion, a warlock, a cleric, and a wizard.

So what are your preferred psionic feats? Improved stomp, improved initiative, improved concertation, anything else that is a must?

At least spell range 1, take talent and sculpted energy cone and energy wave later, your party will thank you for it. Do NOT pick psychic healing it's broken at the moment and does nothing, if it did my party would at least survive one whole more round before total destruction.

Yeah I realized I missed this earlier, trying to do it now and it's not ending well. Even if you clear all of the first wave of spiders she comes out and then after about 3 or 4 rounds a huge statue gets thrown into the mix who can drain levels with his weapons. Prismatic void x2, empowered ice storm, everyone dead except the Samurai and Gladiator.

Sorry for flooding, but while we're on the subject of SR I think I found another bug, my red wizard is stuck at 19 SR even though he has a mantle of 28 SR. The mantle itself shows up in the effects, but the total SR is only the 19 from natural ability, needless to say this is a serious issue for having the slightest hope of surviving any of the shit later monsters are throwing at you.

I tried to go cold turkey and failed, just finished beating the moon chamber only to find out I'll be fighting with a split party. Called it for the night.
Hate that paying gold for leveling bullshit.

Current party (everything's felt quite doable so far, haven't used any scrolls, saved them to teach to my wizard as he hit each level):
Gladiator halfgiant
Rogue mantis (was good at first, now took a dip, waiting for her to catch up with the rest)
Samurai salamander
Cleric halfling (100% focused on healing and buffs)
Blue Wizard elf
Psion human

The way I see it the only possible way to win that fight would be to kill all but one of the spiders and then try and have the fighters right there in the area waiting for her to show up, dump anitmagic cloud and hope to God that you win init and she fails her rolls, still does nothing about her entourage or the stone statute and other spider that shows up later.

In other words, it probably cannot be done.

I just don't understand what your intended approach to kill the hydra is, other than using the arrow of slaying and praying for luck. You can't melee it, and it heals so much per round. It even has great saves so you can't lock it down with spells easily either...

By the way, you get 200 extra XP if you kill the hydra before the lizard king...

We have to talk to Pierre about encounter design.

Having an NPC sell an Arrow of Slaying, then hoping that your ranged attack roll hits, and the high Fortitude save monster fails its saving throw, is not acceptable design. I can live with the "you lose if you don't get initiative," questionable as that might be, but I do not like a fight that comes down to reloading until someone fails a save.

(For the record, I have beaten the hydra. And I think in THEORY I can beat it in melee as well if I can position the 13 attacks (hasted) gladiator mantis next to it AND have it get tripped by the 5% chance of Resilient Grease or disable it some other way, but that's crazy.)

Oh, I found a line. Confuse has a 70% chance to work on the hydra. If it gets confused and ends up not attacking, it's doable.

Also, why does it get to do a full standard attack AFTER using its Breath Weapon? Shouldn't Breath be a full round action?

Okay, here are your Arrow of Slaying alternatives:

1. Hope Confusion takes and that he doesn't use his turn to attack
or
2. Place a Gladiator with 13 attacks such that he gets to attack before the hydra, so that, even though the Hydra will still crush him once it gets to move, its HP will be low enough that it can be nuked down.

If you take a drake its breath is a standard action but there is a feat to reduce it to move action, I guess the hydra has that feat too.

I think the optimal 3 melee characters for your starting party are:
1 Fighter or Gladiator trip Half-Giant. Fighter gets wade-in, Gladiator gets higher ability scores. Both should work.
2 Mantis Gladiators. At level 8 they get 11-12 attacks per round of you have Haste. Unless your melee does retarded damage or can Trip, melee is pointless...

Honestly, the Whirlwind build I'm using is worthless. It would be amazing vs. hordes of enemies, but Pierre completely skips the minions and just throws hordes of killers at you instead.

My gladiator is worth her weight in gold, those dual maces from the genie destroy anything she gets within distance of, provided she can hit them. If could hit that spider bitch I could take her down, but they all come with crazy levels of buffs that you have no chance of dispelling. In the meantime I doubled back to the undead room I didn't finish, I just need to squish the lich now.

In hindsight there might be better weapon combos out there, but I don't have the luxury of experimenting with them. I think there's two death scythes, one in the big undead room and one on the vampire who can trip and push everyone into electric pits of death, they both have vorpal and crit buffs out the wazoo so it might be the better combo and some of the other weapons the genie can give you are nasty.

I'm wondering, a set of enchanted weapons with shattermantle might help open up resistant targets to magical attacks.

I've made it to chapter 3 with my very nice party, but there's still a nagging feeling I should reroll and replace the Samurai with another Gladiator; he just does so little and he's never going to get any better, either, I don't think. I guess the DR penetration comes in handy.
Contrary to most of you I found the intro fight not too bad. Got lucky with initiative, disabled the bitch and presto.
