How viable are smaller parties? For shits and giggles, I did an initial test run with a human samurai, was blessed by some good rng so I took only a few rerolls in the fuckin' bee encounter, reached lvl 5 before even defending the village or whatever but I realized early on that the game ain't built around solo, definitely not with a single martial class. I'm thinking about running a 3 man party next but I'm still brainstorming on classes and shit.

mondblut if you are not getting this game, you will never get anything anymore. It's as incline it can be , despite the flaws.

As the Codex's most outspoken combatfag, my dear mondblut , you have to play this game. Visually it doesn't look worse than the original 80s Gold Box games, you even get used to the tokens and learn to love them.

But gameplay-wise, this is an absolute 10/10 for any red-blooded combatfag. A must play.

Early on, a 3 men party is viable but as level is capped at 20, I think, it'll get tough later on.
I'd pick Fighter + Wizard + Psionicist, mostly human for more feats.
Eventually centaur or dwarf for the fighter for better trip saves/rolls as he already gets a lot of feats.

Some tough end game fights like the Spider Queen (you usually take it on around level 16), the snares and the castle entrance will be next to impossible.

Of course, you could add Pizarra and Erzimon for the spider queen and then the "hidden" character as well for the castle, making it a smaller party early on and a 6 men party during chapter 4.

With a smaller party, i'd focus on saving throws gear and feats.

Strap Yourselves In Codex Year of the Donut Codex+ Now Streaming! Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
My body is ready to finally play this, a couple of questions:

-mantis unarmed monk - does it make sense? There's 14 STR cap during char creation on such character.
I also tried this build because I did play Dark Sun at one point in my life and remembered the FOUR attacks that a mantis gets out of the gate. Sadly, this is a weird ass home-brew hybrid set of rules because while it does list 4 attacks under the Mantis race you most certainly do NOT get 4 unarmed attacks as a mantis monk. Maybe you'd have better luck w/ Gladiator as someone mentioned but I will be rerolling into something else since 1 attack a round ain't cutting it. Also for a monk in general the STR cap is not a major issue if you take weapon finesse which will then run off your DEX stat.

-any tips on difficulty? I do not like cheating like every feat of attribute point at every level but I've also read here that KOTC2 is much more difficult that first part. I do not fear to reload and I am learning animal. Should I play on normal difficulty with all popamole helpers on (like those extra points or no gold to lvl up)?
The game is hard AF and very unforgiving. It is definitely of a different time, the good news is you can dial the difficulty down at any time. If you made it through the tutorial fairly easily you are fine, if you did not, then turn on the helpers. You said you only played the first tutorial battle, that is a mistake. Play at least up to the 3rd encounter to get a feel for what combat is really like.

What's the default difficulty setting for the number of feats per level? I've changed it to one per level from what I thought was 2 per level, but now I'm not sure.

I'm very slowly creating characters, have not found the time to actually play yet. I read the entire non-spoiler part of the guidebook. Very interesting.

Hmph....against my better judgment I bought this game.. Pierre needs to drop the price though. It's way too high. $35 would be perfect and the sales would make up for the price difference.

Shouldn't we make a build thread? Or at least talk about it! I still can't share much because i haven't started the main module. "Tutorial" + brainstorming takes a lot of time.

The only thing i am sure of is that I want a Gladiator and possibly a Mantis and/or Half-Giant. Because of Dark Sun games of curse, one of the few (the only?) D&D games having those.

So far I made myself a Half-Giant Gladiator, I'm not sure if the +4dex -2con is better or worse than the basic half giant.
People praise them so a Psionicist can have a place in the team. Also Dark Sun again.
For the rest, not sure. The traditional wisdom calls for a pure arcane caster (only Wizard in this game afaik) and a pure divine caster, which means a Cleric.
I'll probably take a simple Fighter.
Which leaves only one slot for something more fancy. Perhaps a Mantis Samurai? A Bard? Death Knight looks tasty. Not sure yet.
I am tempted to not take a Cleric but someone else with access to Cleric spells instead. Sorcerer?

Tutorial is already not easy, meaning necromancer battle.. Need re-do builds.

Bard, Rogue in general from what I see has a ton of unique interaction on dialogue as both has unique Skills no other Class has.

Nature based class also has unique interaction including gathering useful herbs (non combat healing items that basically let you to do stuff within the rest restriction). Those herbs are expensive in general costing hundreds of gold so having them for free is nice so far.

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Grab the Codex by the pussy RPG Wokedex Strap Yourselves In Codex Year of the Donut Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath I helped put crap in Monomyth
After a couple of hours of attempts at spider queen with this party, I got super lucky and had her die to a single prismatic breath from the Prince spider.

Not exactly an honourable kill, but I'll take it.

Beats the usual hoping to get lucky on a grapple and stopping her prismatic void insta kill.

There sure is a lot of RNG shafting and reloads.... It's kind of the point of the game though. It's a puzzle to figure out how to beat the battles with limited resources. And even as my party is getting stronger the battles are hard. It's pretty brutal but I love it. I like the music too, EQ vibes.

I went with Warrior, Cleric, Rogue, Wiz, Sorc, Bard. The wiz is evocation and sorc is like a shaman with some healing and stuff. Bards are pretty good. Feels like I'm playing TOEE again or something, fun times.

Serious question - do people actually like playing games like that? Wasting *hours* to get lucky?

Can’t speak for Tacgnol but I think that having a game that is actually challenging is such a breath of fresh air to some people that it’s worth putting up with a little bit of bullshit.

I don't know about him, and i'm not at the main module yet but i don't like the game "like that". If i run into a wall like described above, a battle that can be won only by chance after hours of replays - i'll reconsider my party, maybe i made a weak one. And consider lowering difficulty - maybe i'm too stupid for the current one.
On the other hand, battles that need to be replayed a couples of times, to be finally won with good tactics (+lack of BAD luck) are ok, that's what the game is about.

That made me remember a question i wanted to ask:
Is this game even possible Ironman? Assuming someone knows the module inside out, is good at d&d tactics and the difficulty settings are not set high? Would it be, in theory at least, doable or not a chance?

I really doubt you could make it through without it crashing and eating your save. The damn wizards cast alteffore all the time on me. That's what I call the spell that closes the game with no error message.
