It's trash and no amount of marketing can fix this.
It's a masterpiece, probably the best adaptation of 3.x we will ever get. It's almost poetic that it has the most confused and baffling art style I've ever seen, considering how it reflects the clusterfuck that was this edition of D&D.

Shame he didnt focus on making the tokens more presentable. The figurines and ai slop and different styles are just terrible
So are the tokens the way he made them. They certainly weren't a strong selling point for very many people. We are talking about potentially SELLING the game to more people than a handful of autists with "prestigious" tastes. The argument: "You can make them yourself!" doesn't work in this case.
He should have made it similar to KotC 1, slightly upgraded, instead. People liked KotC 1 graphics. Indie level but distinct enough from other games. Probably seemed a lot of work to Pierre at the time but since he ended abandoning tokens anyway... I don't think tokens would have worked marketing-wise no matter what. They certainly needed to look better if they were to have a fighting chance at all.

I am sure the tokens would have been better received if they were more polished and had better portraits. Most of the ingame portraits are completely terribad, uncanny valley

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
People complaining about tokens is what led Pierre to buy lots of asset store trash and subsequently make AI images for event/dialog backgrounds.

You token complainers are responsible for the stall in actual content development, and an even more amateurish and off-putting artstyle. Thanks, faggots.

Because it is not Pierre who makes all the decisions, right? :nocountryforshitposters:

I could say that people who encouraged him to pursue token idea, instead of ridiculing him from the start, are to blame. He didn't base his graphics on KotC 1 looks because of them. We could have KotC 2 with nice, clean KotC 1 graphics+. Instead we have what we have. But me saying so would be silly.

BTW, the discussion, in case you missed it, is about sales potential of the game not whether tokens are liked or disliked by a few individuals. The ones made by Pierre are simply butt ugly AND they were disliked by the average player. End of story. Probably the whole idea was disliked - by most. And I have sales as proof. Not that other genius moves by Pierre didn't contribute but whatever.

For the record, personally I don't mind tokens - i played with them for parts of the game made for them which is most of the game. If they were prettier i'd be happy. However for the game's popularity it would have been better if the word "token" never even came to Pierre's mind.

if I see a deranged hobo in the street smearing dirt all over himself, and I tell him to stop, and he starts smearing shit on himself instead, that is definitely my fault yes sir

Mortmal’s assessment is far more sensible. The second module isn’t stalling due to the graphics discussion. AoC wasn’t finished when he did the kickstarter, and that’s where the funds went to. Then the game failed to get enough sales post KS to keep developing full-time, so now he does it in his free time while holding a real gig to pay the bills. I’ve no doubt he’ll eventually deliver, but all the detours with AI slop to keep some semblance of updates going on have nothing to do with the users’ complaints about the presentation.

The man went his own way(singular achievement potential with solo devs is absolutely balanced out with their vulnerability to personal turmoil and tragedy) with it to a fate more Hopeful, after a fashion, than similar levels of impetus have led to situations like Incursion or the eternal embers for Darghul---I too think the next module(s) will happen, but their state at v1.0 even compared to this initial one with all the extra AI Baggage and whatnot heaped upon it feels greatly imperiled.

The silliest thing is that we would probably all do it again for Knights of the Chalice 3 lol
