Like 8 hours in and the game is nice but for whatever reason I just don't want to play anymore. Maybe I'm just burned out on this genre.

Question for those who finished the game - were you able to beat Laxasia solo? And - if yes - how many tries did it take?

Yes, no idea, 4h+ split in 2 evenings (before nerfs, no throwables).
I mostly rolled and played it safe, only pguard the air projectiles.

I finally got her, after ~ 30 attempts split across 3 days. I think she is harder than Friede or Orphan of Kos, comparable to Sword Saint Isshin, but not as crazy hard as Malenia. Still, what an amazing boss fight, peak Souls experience. Hard, aggressive, but at the same time skill-based, without cheap one-hit-KO grabs from across the room or other shit - every time you die, it's your fault, and you make progress after each attempt. The music, atmosphere, adrenaline and stress level during the fight, just magnificent. 10/10.

Finally finished the game, took me 50+ hours for some reason - this included doing everything that's possible, messing around with different weapons, and most bosses solo. Amazing game and brilliant effort for a first-try Soulslike from a new studio.

The list of things done well will be probably very long, but here we go:
+ great atmosphere
+ fun combat: fast, responsive, with proper feedback and no strange hitboxes
+ very good weapon variety keeping things fresh, with each weapon being unique in some way
+ good enemy variety, new enemies introduced even 1h before you're done with the game
+ very cool idea with weapon altering mechanism (handle + blade separated), allowing for interesting combinations
+ consistent difficulty, game is kicking your ass even at the end, elite enemies are no joke
+ great boss fights: memorable, difficult, but not being cheap at the same time
+ no 'Lost Izalith' areas: attention to detail was kept until the end
+ fantastic optimization, 4k & 100fps+
+ nice music
+ surprisingly interesting story
+ good writing
+ interesting characters
+ side quests are not as cryptic as in From games and actually doable without a guide
+ some serious C&C that influences the ending
+ decent character development with different amulets / P-Organs / Legion Arms
+ very good level design at times (not consistent though)
+ very polished product, both in terms of overall attention to detail, no bugs and optimization
+ tons of references to Bloodborne / Dark Souls / Sekiro; the guys clearly played all those and knew what makes the game good

Hard to point out anything bad to be honest, maybe some minor stuff:
- game is pretty linear, you need to progress chapter by chapter
- 3 of the Legion Arms seem to have limited usability
- some of the fights will require you to 'git gud'
- game may be too difficult for people with poor reflexes (at times)

9/10, definite GotY for me. The game is leagues above your typical Souls clone, the only non-From game that can stand the comparison is Nioh 2. I had more fun playing this than Dark Souls 2 to be honest. Must play for anyone who liked Bloodborne / Sekiro / Dark Souls.

Interesting, thanks for the write up.

When does it start to get hard? I played a bit of this last night and was bored. The presentation and everything is very good, but the early game is so easy it's almost ridiculous.

It's like dark souls where it's pretty easy or mildly challenging unless you stubbornly refuse to use 99% of the things available to you at which point you've made the game so repetitious and boring that you'd be better off playing by throwing darts at your controller from across the room instead.

 Hey, I don't often use consumables in any of them other than estus. Less of a conscious challenge choice and more of my general hoarding mentality that's been cultivated over decades of playing RPGs.

If you aren't holding every potion, throwing knife, buff item, and other consumable the game offers by the end and then still not use it despite there literally not being a chance of a future "rainy day", can you even pretend to have a monocle?

I remember when I couldn't figure out why everyone was saying the mimic tear in elden ring was so good because mine just spazzed out and died without doing much good. Shittier than the zombie mage. Turns out mimic tear isn't cut out for guerilla warfare, doesn't know what to do with every slot filled with weapons and gadgets for any situation.

Work smarter, not harder is my motto. But If you do play the hard way, then it'll get pretty bad in lies of P before long. The basic mooks aren't much of a threat but the crackhead spaz minibosses and bosses will probably be very annoying. Without an arsenal, you'll probably have to learn the timing on the parry which I tried for an hour or so and said "no thank you"

The first 'skill check' Boss is probably Scrapped Watchman, so around 3h in. If you can get him in few tries solo, it means you're pretty good at the game. Most of the hardest encounters are mid to late game though. Hardest boss for me was Laxasia, followed by Green Monster and a fight with a certain group of enemies. Honorable mentions to Archbishop, King of Puppets and Nameless Puppet. And of course the Clown, so more like a mini-boss.

Yeah, you can load up on that stuff after you summon it, but the best use of mimic tear is if you have a "fuck you" high cost nuke spell or heal equipped and then let it go nuts spamming that. It doesn't have mana, so you can basically become invincible depending on what you've kitted it out with. But you're wanting to give it only one or two things to do and then re-equip the rest of your stuff afterwards.

Work smarter, not harder is my motto.

Yeah, I'm more about the Rocky Balboa school of fighting. i.e. "Block with your face until they lose!"

Thanks, I'll stick with it for a bit and see how I feel about it. I was pretty close to bouncing off of it.

How am I supposed to do that while malenia is slicing me up like a thanksgiving turkey? :argh:

Well you could always try this.

git gud.

Failing that, this helps some struggling people out.

Summon, pray RNGesus is on your side and Let Me Solo Her is still playing, watch how a man does it.

Anyway, about Lies of P.

Killed some bosses and mini-bosses, cleared out all sidequests that I've found, got a bunch of weapons, finished the factory.

Pros:
  • Great presentation
  • Nice level design even if the progression is linear
  • Weapon handle/blade swapping is nice with how it lets you tinker with scaling and movesets
  • Interesting setting - kind of like Steelrising except far less janky and kind of actually good

Cons:
  • So far, one of the easiest Soulslikes I've played. Zzzzzz - but it has killed me now and again when I stop paying attention.

Meh. Solid 7/10 - may or may not finish it, but didn't feel my time was wasted so far either.

Bah! I'd rather die than do either of those suggestions. IIRC I found a blood spell that pretty much stunlocked her in tandem with one of the non-mimic tear ghosts.

IGN awarded it Best Soulslike of 2023. It's funny and insanely stupid to me that they have this as a category, even for IGN standards.
