if they don't ban omnath, clover, henge, ugin, and thieves' enforcer I'm quitting mtg until kaldheim and even then I may just come back to draft and dip out again
tread carefully, wotc
Crazy sons of bitches did it. With Shamrock and Omnath being functionally dead after this move, I consider the four rares from Escape additional consolation, cause nobody's going to be playing those, so might as well get the wildcards back.
Not sure what to spend them on now. It's still not enough for a fully functional neostorm combo. Though getting a few Sea Gate Stormcallers doesn't look bad.
Banning escape WITH Omnath is really surprising. I guess it's still powerful in ramp decks since it's essentially 5 mana draw 5, but all the same Omnath was the only time it felt seriously backbreaking. 4 rare wildcards though, nothing to sneeze at. And I'm glad clover's shitcanned. And T3feri banned and burning-tree emissary unbanned in historic AGGROCHADS RISE UP
My gut feeling is it's time to play Izzet. Run your own counters (Not many, but a few), most of your creatures have flying to cockblock rogue evasion, and you're loaded with instant speed removal so you can play the "Looks like you're the one casting spells on your turn now, bro" game. And slip in a phoenix of ash or two just for some cheeky fuck you if they get some mill going on.
Yep, a lot of cunts will be trying mill in the bo1 ladder just to tick people off. Running good escape cards and that black landfall shade shiznit that keeps coming back seems like the best way to come about it.
I'm liking how this plays, by the way.
The SB is provisional, I'm using it in Bo1, so it's pre-loaded vs aggro. I might not need the Shredded Sails at the moment, though it's the closest thing to Abrade in standard.
Sideboard
1 Lurrus of the Dream-Den (IKO) 226
1 Mystical Dispute (ELD) 58
3 Negate (ZNR) 71
2 Soul-Guide Lantern (THB) 237
4 Duress (M19) 94
3 Shredded Sails (IKO) 136
1 Call of the Death-Dweller (IKO) 78
I'm mostly seeing gruuuul and rogues in the ladder and had decent games vs. both. It finally feels like playing a honest game without rigging.
I've also seen a rather explosive GWB +1/+1 counter thing, so looks like people are experimenting once again.
My gut feeling tells me that aggro will be the deck to beat as Embercleave seems to be the "OP" card left in Standard. But if you want you can build a control deck full of removal and beat aggro so maybe we will have a healthy meta. In contrast those sweet value midrange cards like Uro and Omnath are hard to counter as they basically do everything by themselves (card advantage, life gain and ramp all tucked on a single card) and should have never been printed in the first place.
Well, aggro is the first thing to get figured out in a new meta, it's the square one if you will. And it's a good thing that we're back at it. If it wasn't for the shamrock ban, it would be the other obvious thing to revert to, so WotC actually showed some fucking foresight here.
It seems that people are actually trying to figure out new things, I'm starting to see actual control decks in the ladder today, BG is also something I haven't seen in a while.
Banning escape WITH Omnath is really surprising. I guess it's still powerful in ramp decks since it's essentially 5 mana draw 5, but all the same Omnath was the only time it felt seriously backbreaking
it would still have gotten you genesis ultimatum into ugin and such shit, i think that's why they removed it. Not that you can't still do degenerate stuff if lotus cobra sticks, but at least the cobra is easily manageable
It's not that surprising, you're talking a turn 3 or 4 draw five cards and absolutely destroy any balance of the game for even an aggro-based deck.
That shit was spammed like crazy in diamond tier.
Green is known for crazy land ramp, and couple that with a card like that, you will have a challenge coming back.
My go too before the ban was to play those "exile" everything cards and just hope to get some decent counter spells and live through the initial blast wave of 15+ spells. Health ramp is important against red decks if you aren't playing aggro.
lukaszek Looks like historic brawl for FNM on Arena. Probably not as big a deal for you now with your Discord but still should mean even easier access to it if you wanna go ham.
Fuck this game, I'm switching over to MTGO. There are some pretty neat cheapo formats you can play. Anybody wanna buy my account lol? I got a pretty decent collection.
Produces lots of grindy games (if you're into that sort of thing) with plenty of triggers popping up without the automatism of "eeeh, bake cat at eot from now on".
Giant Opportunity is a weird one, but there are matchups where you simply want a 7/7 token (Doom Foretold). You can mutate gemrazers under it and it still counts as a token.
BR matchup used to be tough for me at first, but the matchmaker obliged and gave me four in a row until I figured it out. Hold back the Scooze so that it immediately eats a Coxa
as it summons, this should also protect it from heartless acts. If you can gobble more, so much the better.
Since the games get grindy (with you usually coming up on top as long as you resolve one of the deck's main engines: Gelded Geese with Crumbs or just ramp into Henge with something big - can be done with Mammoth and Lovestruck),
you'll get to school a lot of mono red guys that taking your time in this game is a virtue.
sideboard card. if 50%+ of the copy paste streamer netdeck meta wasn't relying on lurrus/graveyard recursion or zenith flare I wouldn't need it.
well this cycling bozo would have lost anyway even if I didn't play it but that's another story
