Most important tip for performance increase / HALP MY COMPUTER IS ABOUT TO MELT issue without having to compromise for graphics quality:
- turn down the FPS, you don't need 60 FPS in a turn- and grid-based blobber
- turn down the shadow draw distance
It would be wonderful if this actually stopped the stuttering.

Some people have problems (even high end systems), others don't. There is a whole thread about it on UBI's forums.

Okay, serious question because I feel an idiot:

Where is the shrine to drop off Orlene's flowers? She said it was between the Castle and Sorpigal, right? In the Ashen hills? Why in the hell can't I find it?

Interesting that Blackguards is a bit higher on the top seller list, yet there are many more people playing MMX.

Probably because people either bought Blackguards and are keeping it on the back burner to play later, or they played it but did not find the game to be what they expected i.e. a Tactics game instead of a Baldurs Gate/IWD/ToEE type game. Regardless it's a superb game too and next on my must play list, unless Divinity Original Sin gets released first.

MMX is amazing, but it really needed to be in beta for 3 more months for optimization. This is the only game i have played where i run the risk of damaging my PC due to heat. I know i should stop...but I can't. Not to mention the framerate, and the graphical issues due to having to turn AA and shadows off so I don't fry my GPU.

Hopefully they work these issues out quickly, and hope this game makes them a lot of money, so they can make a sequel that has the best elements of the Xeen series but also MM 6 & 7, like free roaming, properly scaled objects on the map, huge area, reduced loading, etc. I also would like more effort to be placed on NPC interaction. That has never been a strong suit of a MM game, but it should be improved at least. Also, original art. I love the art style for the most part in this game, but once in a while I see groan inducing shit like the crusader model picked right from the Heroes games.

A much simpler explanation is that people are buying MMX from stores other than Steam, which nonetheless provide Steam keys. Steam top sellers only tracks sales on Steam itself, not redeemed keys. Also, I imagine preorders, early access and retail are much larger for MMX than for Blackguards as well.

No real way to tell though, since none of the involved parties will release sales figures.

The only people who care about interactive environment in a fucking blobber are Skyrim fags.

Well, the Dungeon Master/Grimrock genre of blobbers does traditionally feature a bit of physics manipulation, hunting for secret buttons, etc. Not sure if that qualifies as "interactive environment" in the popamolers' book or not.

The funny thing is that they'll never attack Bioware games for that reason. Mass Effect has a 3D world too, why doesn't it lose points for not having an Elder Scrolls-style interactive environment?

Even funnier is that they never attack games like Etrian Odyssey for that, yet when there's suddenly a game in the similar subgenre on the PC it comes under attack from all angles at once.

Take for example Etrian Odyssey IV; it got some highly positive reviews from IGN, Gamespot, Destructoid, etc; all 8/10s or 9/10s. Now admittedly I haven't read all of their MMX reviews, but let's take Gamespot for example. The score for MMX is 6/10, with 8/10 for EO4. Different reviewers, of course - and more importantly, different standards.

Take this quote from the MMX review:

Movement has even been improved from the days of yore. M&MXL features turn-based combat, so you can't gimmick the system. Back in the day, it was common to cheat through real-time battles with tricks like the Eye of the Beholder Two Step, where you would zip forward to hit a monster and then immediately retreat before it could hit you back. Here, you're locked into battle once an enemy closes and the fight begins. So instead of dipsy-doodling back and forth, you're stuck going toe-to-toe with the bad guys. This results in some grueling combat, since you have virtually no range of motion once melee combat has started and no ability at all to choose the better part of valor and run away.

In some ways, the game goes too far. Not only does it take away the exploits common to first-person RPGs in the '90s, but it hammers away at you relentlessly (even at the lower "adventurer" setting). Combat is unforgiving right from the opening tutorial quest to clean spiders out of an underground lair. Monsters flank and surround you in almost every other fight, frequently spawning in out of nowhere to your rear. Just when you've got your hands full with that minotaur in your face, along come two more to hassle you from behind. Most monsters also have devastating special abilities. Almost every enemy has the ability to stun you, poison you, enfeeble you, petrify you, hit you with extra attacks, and more. Wolves and goblins can insta-kill party members if they get lucky. I don't recall an easy battle in the entire campaign. That sounds sort of fun and intense, but really, I could have done without titanic half-hour struggles to best the likes of two goblins, a couple of cavemen, and a pack of panthers.

First, it somehow suggests that step-based games "from the days of yore" were real-time, referencing EotB and contrasting it with MMXL. The reverse of the turn-based-as-tech-limitation argument? Second, it criticizes the game for its punishing difficulty - the same thing that Gamespot praised EO4 for (which is particularly amusing since EO4 is even happier to one-hit-kill you and inflict all kinds of status effects on your party). Same for turn-based combat, "oldschool" party management, etc.

tl;dr Review scores are arbitrary and journalists aren't even knowledgeable about/good at the games they get to review, more news at 11.

I have a question - normal edition costs 60 potato gold coins ($20), while deluxe costs 90 ($30). Is the deluxe edition worth it?

Man, if I have one major complaint as far as gameplay goes it's that this game is way too reliant on potion chugging. I ran out of mana potions in the Elemental Forge so it's pretty much impossible for me to defeat Gralkor. Slogging all the way back to Sorpigal :x

Edit: Was able to do it with a Burning Determination scroll and restoration potions after 5 or 6 reloads. Damn, that was hard.

That's a complaint?

Nowadays, an RPG that actually makes you use your consumables is major :incline:

Like level 7. Just make sure you cast the spirit armor or whatever the hell it is. Keep that caster focused on keeping that spell going as much as possible taking breaks to chug mana potions. Also don't stand next to a ledge.

In fact, that is pretty much what most encounters become in the middle of act 2. Maybe I just have a gimped party.

Even further edit: Has anyone GMed Dark magic? I have it mastered and so far none of the spells are even worth it except for the shadow cloak(which is the base level spell) which works every once in awhile.

Why do the vendors not sell one handed axes and why are they not found anywhere for fucks sake? My defender has been stuck with a tribal axe for ages when everyone else gets all sorts of cool enchanted shit from all around.

That was a lesson to be learned early on already. Always buy mana and healing potions as much as you can when doing some shopping. I always keep at least 50 in reserve for both, and if I go below I go get more before heading to any dungeon. I think I now have around hundred both.

Around 6 to my recollection (my druid was lower than the others because he seems to lag behind when it comes to leveling).

Also, I can't recommend more: getting the Sleep spell. That spell was a life saver in act 2, when you really start getting zerged by enemies(like 10 at a time).

How long is the game supposed to be 40 hours or so?

Does it have an auto-mapper?

Thanks. Can't seem to find these details out anywhere.

I was a mix of 6-7, nobody died and it was comfortable. Had to use Cel.Armor a lot, invaluable so it is.

Edit - Veryalien, yes there is an automap and mini-map showing what tiles you've walked over, it also annotates nearby shops and inns etc. You can use personal notes too to set squares for shrines that boost the party. (for example)

Yes, it automaps. I dunno how long it takes, depends on how good you are at these kind of games. For me I take a little longer. I've probably got like 20 hours logged into it, and I just started the 3rd act. Although to be fair, I was stuck for hours in act 1 cause of the bridge guard.

Definitely use the notes to mark where all the trainers you are going to be using are when you find them, even if you can't currently get trained. That will save you shitloads of time wandering around looking again.

Also remember this acronym before travelling: A.B.P.

A - Always

B - Buy

P - Potions

That's how you become a winner, now get out there and get some loot. (Unless you love spending countless hours running back and forth from town to dungeon)

shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit..... i wanna play too guysss :( so jelly with everyone in this thread right now. ifi get it on steam, do i still need uplay? i don't want uplay.

pay $30-$50 to find out whether a game is shitty or not? I'll wait until it hits the discount bin. Just like I will with M&MX.

You missed the second part of my sentence

I must say I'm pretty impressed by you, you've out-stubborned even Humanity Has Risen as far as this game goes :salute:

Finally came around, eh? :smug:

You'll need to install Uplay, even If you get the Steam version. It's only required to connect online during the initial activation, otherwise you can switch Uplay to offline mode.

Or you can buy it, download the crack that gets rid of uplay, and delete the lines of code that prevent you from carrying on with the game without activation.

Edit:
Thanks for the responses. Is there lots of loot to collect?

Dear God, couple of hours in I actually thought the one thing this game gets completely right is the difficulty. Had to reload a couple of times cause of wiped party but never to the point where things started to get infuriating because I couldn't get past one specific battle, especially when I started *gasp* thinking about my tactics.
I guess unless you pitch your game as "WATCH OUT GUYS TEH VERY HARD!!!" in about every promotional video or article a la Demon Souls braindead reviewers expect their awesome buttons to literally make all things explode immediately. This is why we can't have nice things.

I can't start the game because Uplay is broken. I cannot access their forums because my 'IP is banned' even though I never posted or visited it before.

Ubisoft FUCKING SUCKS.

EDIT:

Fixed. Had to download uplay from ubisoft manually and set up.

For mushidushi in the lighthouse just keep defending, moving, healing - but only attack with your caster and ranged. The retaliation is simply too strong at that level to handle with melee.
