Pretty funny to complain about multimedia lore dumps when the basis for Nier itself is mostly contained in a drama CD. Not saying it's a dumb view to have, just funny.

Not really, if you want the whole story you need a lot more stuff, and that's not mentioning the Drakengard stuff that still ties to Nier (especially after the mobile game tied Nier back into Drakengard's timeline)

I'm just saying that if you say it out loud that you hate this franchise, especially in some American neighborhood, it's not going to end well for you.

I found this game in my steam library last week, which probably means that I bought it heavily discounted in a sale at some point.

Not knowing what to expect I booted it up. It's been weird. Some disorganised thoughts:

It's quite easy. I somehow managed to get a near invincible build by accident. I plumped for the entire set of chip slots quite early (all the +N SLOTS items), then just auto set my chips. As I have a few chips that give health when I kill/deal damage I am a regeneration monster. I've died once in the first ~9 hours to the first snake enemy.

The default keybinding is weird. I immediately remapped it to Dark Souls, which strangely is not one of the three preset options.

I read that there was some kerfuffle online about many textures being shit but I personally doubted how bad they could be. They are so, so bad. I can't understand how they were left in. Fairly easily modded via NAMH which appears to be the way to go these days. There's a lot of out-of-date modding guides online from before the final patch so it took me a while to find NAMH. Predictably Nexus is filled with all sorts of coomer mods. I reserve the right to make everyone's boobs massive at a later date.

It's cool how there is a mix of genres. I find the shmup/twin-stick shooter sections to be "good, actually". I would never really consider those genres normally so they are refreshing.

The environments are beautiful on occasion but bland as all hell most of the time. Somehow they have a visual commonality with a lot of bland Japanese game backgrounds. Like the urban areas in Death Stranding. A queer auto-generated feeling. Can't put my finger on that effect.

The plot is porno-tier junk but the set pieces are cool. I always think the Japanese have an eye for shots, I dunno why I can think of nearly no contemporary Japanese films.

I mean, you could turn up the difficulty. My 7 year old niece beat Ending A on Normal last year without doing any weapon changing, upgrading, or skill chips.

The people who manage to beat the final bullet hell shooter against the credits to get ending E without any assistance have my respect :salute: :salute: :salute:

Of course I hold in even higher regard those who chose to sacrifice their saves in the end to help others :salute: :salute: :salute: :salute: :salute:

There's apparently a sequel in the works, or at the very least, ready to be announced. Unfortunately, the only source is some guy on twitter who works as a games' consultant.

Yosuke Saito said we'd get a reveal of Taro's next game last year. Hopefully the reveal->release turnaround is quick given how long this has been in the works.

Would love to see something from Taro again that isn't some mobile game shit. Also Voice of Cards was an incredible waste of potential across the board too. We'll see if the old dog still has something left in him.

I'd like to see something that brings back the mobile game even as a standalone single player title (which, essentially, it was). That one had several lore dumps that had world changing implications for the lore of Drakenier's setting.

I wish they make a sequel set 20000000 years after nier automata, starring "Kaine" that got revealed in the first trailer as not Kaine, but instead someone that just looks like Kaine and has the same name. Then it is revealed by an optional NPC dialogue early in route C that she is actually related to Kaine from Nier the first game. Then in an obscure untranslated limited edition postcard it is revealed that she is indeed Kaine, but from another universe that got transported 20000000000000 years in the future/alternate universe.
