I found this game in my steam library last week, which probably means that I bought it heavily discounted in a sale at some point.
Not knowing what to expect I booted it up. It's been weird. Some disorganised thoughts:
It's quite easy. I somehow managed to get a near invincible build by accident. I plumped for the entire set of chip slots quite early (all the +N SLOTS items), then just auto set my chips. As I have a few chips that give health when I kill/deal damage I am a regeneration monster. I've died once in the first ~9 hours to the first snake enemy.
The default keybinding is weird. I immediately remapped it to Dark Souls, which strangely is not one of the three preset options.
I read that there was some kerfuffle online about many textures being shit but I personally doubted how bad they could be. They are so, so bad. I can't understand how they were left in. Fairly easily
modded via
NAMH which appears to be the way to go these days. There's a lot of out-of-date modding guides online from before the final patch so it took me a while to find NAMH. Predictably Nexus is filled with all sorts of coomer mods. I reserve the right to make everyone's boobs massive at a later date.
It's cool how there is a mix of genres. I find the shmup/twin-stick shooter sections to be "good, actually". I would never really consider those genres normally so they are refreshing.
The environments are beautiful on occasion but bland as all hell most of the time. Somehow they have a visual commonality with a lot of bland Japanese game backgrounds. Like the urban areas in Death Stranding. A queer auto-generated feeling. Can't put my finger on that effect.
The plot is porno-tier junk but the set pieces are cool. I always think the Japanese have an eye for shots, I dunno why I can think of nearly no contemporary Japanese films.
