I agree with the sentiment in 2D but rendering technologies in 3D is far more important.
I think 2D is inherently superior to 3D in all aspects. But if someone wants to use 3D so badly, he should know that 3D in videogames already peaked in the Playstation 2. These games still look good almost 20 years later and look better than most 3D games released today.
Everything else after that as been mostly corporates trying to sell people that more polygons is equal to looking better, when most of the time is actually the contrary, and with the intention that they spent more money on new consoles or graphic cards, but more importantly, to have a "selling point" that don't rely on creativity or anything that is really relevant.
So, you don't need that "high tech" to make a good 3D (while still probably being bothersome and resource consuming, but maybe this is subjective).
