Josh's class update was going to be on Thursday at 10AM, but they bumped it back a week. That's why they picked Thursday specifically.

When the Trailer/New Website came out the articles all went up at 6AM as well.

A preview embargo on a game that was funded by backers solely is not what i would call a show of good faith by Obsidian, they could either send the info they have to the backers first or they opt to cater to the usual publisher run press cycle, guess they went for the second choice.

They have sent us info in official capacity 80 times now. You got to have something for the press. I would have liked to see what was shown but I can wait.

People may scoff at this, but the press is more used to see unfinished projects than most gamers are. A lot of gamers would probably complained about the unfinished state of the footage, whereas journalists are seeing early prototypes for all kinds of projects. One recent example being Son's Bloodborne that got leaked. The framerate in that game is still not great. Unfortunately, people have complained about that despite the game being far away from release.

Conveniently ignoring that they /have/ sent info to the backers first many, many, many, many times over now, and that their stated goal for gameplay footage (E.G, a good one) to release for the backers make perfect sense.

Wantign Obisidian to give /nothing/ to the press is weird as hell, especially as so before that every other Kickstarter studios had given more exclusives to the press than they did (and, yes, i am including W2 in this).

Still, having an embargo in place for new info before releasing it to backers...

Pillars of Eternity
I can’t talk about what I saw of Pillars of Eternity at the show just yet, but I can say Obsidian’s spiritual successor to the old Infinity Engine games (Baldur’s Gate, Planescape: Torment) is right near the top of my most-anticipated list. --Hayden

Seconded. Look for more details on PCWorld soon. --Brad

Pillars of Eternity Top 5 at E3 from Escapist Magazine, mentioned first too.

Yes, this Kickstarter title made its first showing at E3 this year, and it is coming along quite nicely. When you look at it, the isometric view and art design has a distinctive feel of Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, not surprising since many of the team have ties to the old RPGs in some way. But this is not a D&D game, so Obsidian has come up with its own rule set, its own world and bestiary, and its own classes and races. Unfortunately, what we saw at E3 is under embargo until later this week, but suffice it to say... Damn, I want to play this when it is ready.

I'm not a huge fan of what Obsidian is doing here with this press exclusivity, but it does seem to be working.

Vault Dweller - remember our discussion? There you go, Obsidian's marketing chops at work. In two days this game is going to get a hefty publicity blitz.

And that is the whole point. We as backers might feel disappointed, but I do think what they are doing is only what they think is best for their game. If this info was given to the backers directly, the press would have no reason to cover the game at all. What the game needs is exposure by bigger gaming outlets. Giving them an opportunity to see the game for themselves is a great way to get their attention.

Would people have preferred if Obsidian didn't go to E3? Not given the press time with the game and a reason to write articles about it to spread the word in whatever way that may be (positive or negative)?

To be honest I don't think anyone is. Oh look they're gonna get good reviews because of it. Someone there understands the press.

:troll:

There's no reason to be a fan of it, but i'm sure a lot of backers including me don't care at all.

I mean, possible if information was given sparringly before. But that isn't the case.

Makes no difference to me; I just want to play the game myself, not see someone else's curated pre-release experience of it. Games like this, where story and choice is supposed to be important, are definitely ones I want to play more than watch.

With that said, if their tactics increase exposure and as a result sales (not saying they will, I've not looked into the subject at all) it can only be a good thing because it will mean they get to make more of this type of game in the future.

I haven't been able to muster up any outrage over this. As a backer I don't feel that entitled to see some stuff. Especially if:

1) I get to see it eventually
2) It helps Obsidian drive interest in the project

The latter can only be good for people who like their games, and for people who want to see them succeed.

There might be a psychological factor, as well: if journalists/reviewers are given a sneak preview, they might reciprocate by writing a better review and generating more buzz. At this point, it's all about spreading awareness of the game to non-pledgers who might be interested, but haven't been keeping up with updates or are not aware of PoE.

[In before ... no ... Me,me ... let ME say it!]

InXile makes a business move by sub contracting and, and, and, was selling out to THE MAN!

Obsidian games the 'for hire' media, stymies the immediate gratification of THE MASSES, and codex commentary reeks of rationality!?!

Where are the heroes of the PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF GAMING!

Whither the rage?

What do I read?

Clear sighted adult commentary or love stuck pandering?

i understand persona's will posture to posture in this grand play ground where it's always 2 more for flinching.

So are we all performance artists.

But.

Would not want to be with in 30 feet of anything Obsidian when the thrill is gone!

30 feet? Horse shoes, hand grenades, and area effect manure flinging … close is good enough …

POE? I only care because YOU care.

Best Indie RPG: Pillars of Eternity
(Obsidian)

Yes, Obsidian isn’t exactly an Indie Dev, when they land huge contracts like BioWare and Bethesda often. But they successfully funded their passion project Pillars of Eternity through Kickstarter, and that means we’re going to classify it as independent since its development is entirely driven by proud backers. Our full preview is coming later this week, but Obsidian set out to create a classic Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale style RPG from days gone by, and we think they’ve more than succeeded. This is a game you’ll want to play, and it made many of us sad we didn’t back it when we had the chance, just to say we were there when it started.

So that's PCWorld (among best from both writers), Escapist Magazine (best of e3), Kotaku (E3 highlight), Gameranx (best of e3), games.cz (best of e3) and mmorpg.com (best of e3) that are definitely going to give it a good review, and most likely game informer and gamasutra as well.

I think they've just taken their favourite games and given then all a specific title. Many of them overlap. Most of the sites have done the same thing.

Doesn't really matter if they all mention DA:I, TW2 and PE. It'll get some DA:I and TW3 buyers to consider PE too.

I'm glad Obsidian is playing the media game and not shitting on the industry to enamor themselves to the backers a la Brian Fargo.

I have no illusions that Kickstarter is a viable, long term business model. Kickstarter has created a moment here where there is excitement about CRPGs again and I hope that as many companies interested in making good games capitalize on that as possible. But at the end of the day for me to continue being entertained these companies need to thrive so I'd much rather they play the media game than sit here thinking my 70$ or whatever I ended up backing entitles me to exclusive access to all information. After more than a decade of decline I'd like to see RPGs return to being a viable investment.

for being supposedly "old school" and :monocled: individuals, many of you guys are whiny bitches. Chill out and let the company do their shit. your fucking entitlement doesn't pay their bills (yes, i understand that many of you whiny bitches were backers). they need to advertise, let them do it the way they've been doing it - the successful way. who the fuck cares if you see it two weeks after the press. trust me, your dick isn't going to get any bigger/more sucked if you've seen a video game press-release before the people who write about it in mass media.
