Dunno about DoS 1, but I heard that DoS 2 sold around 5 million copies. I think if in Pathfinder will be implemented turn-based mode - it will sell a bit more.

I wonder where you found this info. Even 3kk would be extremely optimistic for PC version of D:OS 2 and Steamspy is useless after Valve closed API.
It was
Divinity: Original Sin 2 1,688,895
in June 2018 leak.

Also I believed this information, because everyone around me (at least people who play games) played DoS 2, shitload people on social media started to post about DoS 2 too, so I started thinking that DoS 2 became REALLY popular.
anvi Sorry for misinformation.

Probably PR, humor and accessibility for general audience.

Owlcats tried to make P:K more casual-friendly compared to their previous works, but steam forums still drown in tears of "genre experts" who think that any game they cant complete on highest difficulty without reloads is "badly designed".

I must admit that game is more enjoyable for me on Hard than on Unfair. I completed last one for achieve, but stat and damage bloat limits efficient builds too much for my liking. And summon spam turns stale really fast.

Main idea with making P:K accessible was relying at casuals being conscious enough about their skill to choose comfortable difficulty.
But it failed spectacularly cause they turned out to be a prideful bunch with idea that any "normal" is beneath them.

Owlcat is bit at fault here too since they never noticed (or did not cared) that easy mode was renamed to normal long time ago.

Imo unfair is idiotic mainly at the beginning of the game, from ~lvl8-9 onwards you usually should have the tools to handle it without too much trouble and in chapter 1 and the start of ch2 you at the very least can pick which stuff to do first, ie farm XP with the easier stuff before attemting the more challenging fights.

But the tutorial and Oleg's was just nuts, single arrow crits for 90 dmg and mobs that have like 70% THC is a bit much for a lvl1/2 party. They should give you a fighter companion immediately instead of the gnome and Linzi, you should complete the mansion at lvl3 instead of 2 and the early fights at lvl1-3 need to be easier so a larger variety of character builds can actually complete them.

I’ve learned how to get through Unfair early game pretty consistently without too many reloads. But it just means spamming rest, True Strike, Fan of Flames, Stone Call, etc. You do it once, and it feels like a shackle on how to play instead of a clever discovery. Doing anything else in the early game is just submitting yourself to insane RNG.

The increase in difficulty was always the wrong kind.

That was what was said right at the beginning of the piece. The howling from the shills was deafening. The Codex called that kind of fucktarded stupidity "incline".

No one is forcing anyone to actually play on Unfair, though. I feel comfortable playing on Hard, so I play on Hard. Someone else might prefer Challenging or Normal and its fine.
If people enjoy playing Easy, that's also ok.

I remember playing the most difficult user-made modules for Neverwinter Nights on "Very Hard" (highest difficulty) and finding the whole thing ridiculously easy. It was the official expansions that I found hard as nuts. I hope P:KM goes on to make at least a mil. These guys at Owlcat deserve it for making such a good, hardcore AD&D game, and for actually trying.

D:OS2 broke over a million? Impressive for a somewhat niche RPG. I recall how happy the lead developer was when the first game in the series made 200K.

It's impressive.. but also a bit sad. As other devs will try to follow in their footsteps. And I'd rather not have this become a blueprint of crpg design.
I mean sure, turn based, with combo effects and a lot of freedom is good, but these games have a lot of issues also.

Is it just me or are the DLCs too expensive? I'm still waiting for a complete edition, but browsing GOG's sale made me think about that. 8 euro for a companion and a class, and 12 euro for a shortish side adventure, taking into account f.e. PoE's DLCs are 10 euro a pop and are longer (I think?). Is Varnhold's lot even good?

In bucks or euro - maybe. But cheaper than chocolate bar in Russia thanks to regional pricing.
I played only BoW for Deadfire, and Varnhold campaign is longer than this one.

It's 2 companions with different personalities, although that is a spoiler + their quests with new areas (member it's not PoE, in PK companion quests stretch through 6 acts with multiple encounters and they also have additional dialogue when made advisors) + some miniquests + romancing + harem ending (considering the state of other... women... in the game, you could say it is "buy yourself a reasonable waifu the DLC")

Varnhold is pretty damn good, its dungeon is best dungeon in my opinion they made, solid BG2 stuff packed with all kinds of monsters. And if you crank up the difficulty to max you'll bang your head against its walls for fucking hours especially once russian DMs would begin doing spoilery spoil stuff making it all even harder.

Also I wish the game would react more to your race/class choice but I guess PoE 1 and 2 spoiled me a bit on that

It reacts to your choices more than PoE ever did, even if the bar is not high due to most reactivity in PoE ever being just banal superfluous stuff.

Yes real C&C is better then in POE1&2, but POE checks about race and class still nice. Sure it's mostly just txt reaction but still fluff is nice.
