So if you can customise the companion completely, what's the point of giving them a background?

Hey here is this barbarian who constantly states she didn't like magic, but you can still make her a caster just because you can.
because it's my game and stop being a fucking socialist who wants to control what I do
god damn commies
Why is there so many communists on the codex?
Because they don't have control over their lives elsewhere, so they do whatever they can to control others online. Old story.

High proportion of posters that come from ex-communist countries. Because humans are instinctively wired for confrontation and developing/asserting their own identity, where a large number of people have rejected an ethos, a minority of them will be inexorably impelled to internalize it as their own creed. It creates a sense of independence from others that nurtures their ego as a placebo for power they can't feel in everyday life or interactions.

Other primates fight because their instincts impel them to do so, but humans have rational capacities and usually need some kind of reason to upset the status quo. Truth be told, upsetting the status quo is, like a male chimp challenging an alpha male, its own reason.

Who are you talking about? Amiri?

Anyway, the point is (jesus christ why do I have to keep saying this) players get to choose the degree to which they adhere to the imaginary role-playing restrictions that the developers (and other players, apparently) have in mind when they write their companion characters.

What the fuck is up with players telling other players how to role-play in singleplayer games? I just do not understand this arrogant attitude at all.

How about we give players the option to play their CRPGs however the fuck they want.

How about we let developers have their vision how they want their game to be.

If they have a vision for how their companions MUST be, why let us customize them at all? Why can Octavia be made into a Barbarian at later levels, but not initially? Your argument rests on faulty assumptions.

:nocountryforshitposters:
There is a middle ground between "totally free customization" and "completely locked into a certain customization". Pathfinder does exactly that.

Total customization of companion is bascally reducing them to glorified portaits. Might as well just make party created at game start like some RPGs in past actually did.

Except for the part where they have their own personality, story, interjections, etc., Yeah, totally

Which hinges upon their initial class most of the time...

I don't understand people, who thinks personality depends on class of character. I mean, the game features alignment system (yeah, I know, alignments is shit crutch, but still) which influences their personality and devs obviously wasn't thinking about stats fitting their class. So I don't see the problem in allowing player to choosing classes/respec companions (ofc some restrictions still applies, like on monk and paladin or choosing deity).

Of course their class is part of their personality. Classes even have alignment restrictions. Do you imagine, idk, Keldorn Firecam of Order of Radiant Heart as anyone but Paladin? You think what you basically do all the time doesn't affect your personality? Think Linzi of Bard College being Bard writing books having quests with Bards could be a Barbarian?

I put people who can't handle companions having their own classes into same category who can't play game without option to hide their helmets. :shitposting:

News from TB mode: did Oleg fight, died to Bokken a few times. I like how my future AT (now just wiz/thief) can at beginning of combat capture someone flat footed and shoot cantrip with sneak damage at them. Makes you think who to focus/charge depending on initiative rolls etc.
I also now understand the point of level 1 spells like Expeditious Retreat, Longstrider or Vanish (although yet to try use Vanish and then ambush enemies in next turn).

Also Quicken Rods are this game's Time Stop.

Also very sad enemies don't understand the idea of 5 ft step.

AI feels like fighting cripples... but extremely muscular and power armor wielding cripples.

Let's say you can choose whatever classes you want for every companion since level 1, then Amiri, Linzi, Valerie, Octavia, Regonar, Ekundayo, Harrim and Tristian's background won't make anysense when you didn't choose some specific classes for them. That's more than half the companions in the game.

So, what? To you it matters for immersion, but it doesn’t bother me at all.

I can play the game however I want. Developers should give us that option.

It’s fun to use companions and try and play the game using the restrictions, however, it shouldn’t be forced.

With creating whole party at the start like in i.e. IWD? Nothing, but it limits certain parts of gameplay and especially story. Which isn't important in in very heavy combat focused games but is self-robbing of gameplay in games with more story focus.

You realize that there is no technical obstacles from pre-making companions with unique names, stories, dialogues and then allowing you to pick and choose them at the party creation screen and making them completly customizeable by player in terms of class, weapon proficiencies, etc ?

If you want to play how you want, then play how u want - respec, use mods, change their stats and classes, give them all 55 point buy, whatever. You are saying all this as if you cannot play how you want and developers must caretake to your every whim and desire.

But leave the default state of the game world actually reasonable where things make sense for players who like it that way.

Designers took stance on the matter; you whiners were the reason Scrolls of Atonement got into the game and you can buy your way out of making wrong choices when playing LG Paladin.

And I don't want to play the game in RTwP, does that mean it shouldn't be forced as well?

Just use the mod, it's what mods for anyway, to let you adjust the game based on your own preference.

Atonement has always been in 3.x. It is there for a reason. Not putting it into a CRPG and allow a fall to be permanent is bad design.

The problem is not that. Is the fact that you can make Linzie learn an Figther level, but can't make Octavia an pure Wiz. "hur dur arcane tricksters have insane damage" only because sneak attack is broken since is different from pnp.

And I don't want to play the game in RTwP, does that mean it shouldn't be forced as well?

I wanna be able to choose between turn based and real time at will like M&M VI-VIII. Why i can't?

Late added TB in original RTwP game is a easy slog fest. Late added RTwP in original TB is messy annoying clusterfuck. Trying to balance it for both equally from early developement will make it medicore at best at both.
