Game saving not working on Mac & Linux, even on Windows people report their saves being deleted (!!!!) and settings not saved (!).
How the hell can you mess up file operations using an engine that does it for you in 2018? I'm confused.

Now, now. I have been bitten by that bug, and it's not a nice feeling having to redownload the whole game on my potato powered connection. But I do have to give them this much, the patched game was up the next day. At least I hope it's patched. The point is, bugs are fixable, bad design is forever. Just look at PoE.

A damn fine game plagued by ridiculous UI/UX oversights and tech issues. Idk who's great idea it was to separate kingdom management into THREE loading screens, but that pretty much sums up the problem I have with it. Also lack of a proper in-game encyclopedia, lack of proper tooltips and coherent explanation as to why certain things are this or that way (like Upgrading buildings apparently requires you to take over two regions at least, which is not mentioned ANYWHERE and buildings still show "can be upgraded" even if you are still controlling only one region).

SO MUCH DEAD AIR too, honestly about 50% of the game you are either waiting for your slow ass party to backtrack their way through the zone, waiting for loading screen or waiting for unskippable resting "report". Not to mention other (admittedly mildly amusing at first) things like people getting stuck in Web for a couple of minutes or rain slowing your party to a crawl, I wouldn't mind it actually (I like having drawbacks on spells and just decisions in general) if not for everything else being so fucked. As far as difficulty is concerned, I'm no longer butthurt about it. After fiddling with options for a while I found what's working for me (still die all the time, but at least I can somewhat reliably hit things), so there's that.

It's equal parts infuriating and fun, besides most of the issues can be (and hopefully will be) fixed. So if you are on the fence about going in, waiting for ultimate edition is probably the play here, however the game itself is everything PoE was supposed to be and if you are itching for a proper IE-like adventure, bite the bullet and get it.

I noticed two bugs with savegames.
One is where you click Exit to Main Menu, some error shows up on screen and you lose your last save.

Another is connected with having multiple campaigns and making saves for each. There you save in one campaign, and you decide to go load the save of the other one and saves get mixed up and one of them loses the save while another one gets extra one. It is a mess.

There has not been a patch released fixing any of the save game or settings bug, people are still reporting them.
You are right about the design, of course, but the bad reviews won't go away (people don't usually correct their reviews)...

I'm fairly sure the game will be in an acceptable state at some point, but I do feel bad for the devs as releasing in such a shoddy state is extremely harmful sales-wise.

Enjoying the game very much so far.
Some of the situations remind me of my group's glory days of p&p hehe

I see many complains, especially on Steam, about bugs or difficulty.
As if it was any different in the days of Fallout 2 when it launched with game breaking bugs and didn't hold your hand.
Remember when 6 wolves surrounded your low-level Chosen One?
There was no internet to cry about it, you had to man up and get the job done!

Someone even gave the game a negative review because dialog choices can't be selected via numpad. WTF?!
O tempora o mores!
Now back to the game...

Crusader can select Weapon Focus at level 1. Weapon Focus requires a BaB of 1, which Crusaders do not have at that point. So you can't select it.

e: Am an eedjit, the Crusader bonus feat allows you to take Weapon Spec regardless of BAB.

I'm not even talking about known Unity cross-platform bugs like broken input on some systems (typing "Dildor" becomes "DDiillddoorr")...

If they had just chosen to actually test this a month more or two before release.
I'd say about half of the negative reviews could have been easily avoided that way.
Now they'll have to live with that mixed review for a while, or even forever if they don't fix stuff soon.
:negative:
Are you sure Unity does it out of the box? Most games have to implement their own save/load feature, because save serialization depends a lot on the game specifics. That is the reason why SRR didn't have this advanced feature.

No wonder Sawyer "balanced" everything. He knows his crowd better than us it seems

More like he was a significant factor in shaping said crowd into what it is today. PoE came out when people were starved for anything that would resemble IE games after having played them to death, ofter with difficulty mods / SCS / etc., and I don't think at that point they would have minded a challenging game (which would have set a quite different precedent).

I mean the linux version, they pulled it from GOG when people reported loading not working and replaced it yesterday with a new version. Steam linux version probably also got an update. As for reviews, yeah, they kind of dropped the ball on this, but if the game is fixed eventually it may retake at least some ground through long term sales or when they push out DLCs. I hope so, as this shows promise.

I think the ones you describe were a minority. Most PoE players/backers I think were either younger people that heard of BG or older people that played BG some time in their lives and had a fond memory of it... but didn't really remember details.
I believe that the second crowd is the one Sawyer targeted mostly

I'm not talking about saving specifically, I'm talking about file operations. Anything that opens/closes/writes to/reads from files.
I'm certain Unity would offer something here, and even if not, it is part of C#.

Anyway, I've been writing code in C++ and other languages for many years, with simple as well as advanced file operations (reading & writing to the same file from across different threads at the same time) and not once did I encounter stuff like sudden file deletion.
It's really not that hard to get right, so the only reason for such screwups is that it wasn't given much attention, and then some fool pressed the "release" button.

Of course, with Unity there is always the possiblity that there is some cheap "save games!" module on the marketplace which was written by complete amateurs and sold to even worse amateurs and then everyone suffers.

What I meant was that, due to the dearth of IE-style games during the previous 15 years, newcomers / second-timers would have accepted as a matter of fact that "a IE style game is challenging" if provided with one.
It's not like Sawyer targeted his crowd well, since he has been progressively backtracking everything since the first PoE expansion (look at the last DLC with megabosses), and more importantly in spite of all that the crowd of PoE has blown DF a great big raspberry.

Whatever DM made BG1. BG1 was also stingy on XP, nobody complained...

Uhm... what?
I mean, yeah, if you followed only the main quest, but if you went out exploring you could easily find massive XP pools.
The sirens, man, the sirens! Sweet, sexy, 2000XP sirens!
And the basilisks.
And the wolves outside the temple near Beregost.
And...

You had to leave the main track to find those, though. Maybe that was your point?

You don't level that fast in most Pathfinder adventure paths.

Each book usually covers between 3 and 4 levels. So it will usually be rather a lot of sessions between each level up.

If anything, you level up faster than normal in the crpg.

Considering that I'd like to purchase the Explorer edition (base game with no extras), should I buy it on GoG or Steam? Which is best to support the devs?

You had to really leave the main track to find those. Also they were super deadly to anyone new that didn't play AD&D. My guess is that most of such players considered such enemies unbeatable and would leave a negative review on Steam if BG1 was released in 2018 (or probably would complain about the belt Ogre one shotting his fighter).

Normal enemies, like the different groups you fought would leave you nice loot but XP was nothing when split between 4 to 6 party members.

Even a normal Basilisk was like 1400 xp and when you split that by 6 you get nothing. And that normal Basilisk would already murder your whole party.

Kinda wish you could see your character's skills or whatever during skill checks to choose from.

I kinda feel playing good is a lot better than neutral/evil or chaotic. The paladin girl seemed a lot better than the dwarf but that's not a problem and the little girl seemed to be the only thief in the group so not sure if I should restart to get her or what.

Oh and the starting soundtrack kinda reminds me with DAO's.
