Appropriately, I have the oldest thing presented so far:

1986. He's got Ultima 4 (1985) and even Wizardry 1 (1980).

Your stuff is not old enough, old man.
Technically he has the first Zork game in there (1977) which is even older....

What I do find a bit weird though is that he has Sorcerian but not the original Dragonslayer (or indeed Atari's Adventure which arguably was the inspiration) or Ys. Whilst he has some of the classic text adventures, some of the real good ones like Spellbreaker that not only were good games but a heap of paraphernalia with them would be worth adding to the collection.

Despite being old enough i don't have any CRPG games' boxes prior to late 90s. I'm a potato, in early/mid 90s game were sold by nice young people on a now non-existent stadium in Warsaw or similar places in other cities. For some reason they sold the games 5 to 10 times cheaper but without boxes. Imagine that! I bought the first original games in mid 90s and those were strategy games not CRPGs (Civilization 2, Sid Meier's Gettysburg). My first CRPG(-like) is very non-prestigious - Diablo 1. Oldest owned good CRPG is JA2. No reason to show those, it's rather pathetic for an old fart.

It's ok, my brother's and me modus operandi was buying the game original, copying the floppies and returning it saying "it does not work "

I actually do have Ys.

As far as Dragonslayer, I've tried to keep the collection to just IBM-PC games with the occasional Amiga or other operating system when I think it's necessary (Perihelion!).

Also, as a side note: this is my 3rd collection over the years. The 1st I just thought I didn't want to keep collecting and sold them off (to a few Codexers as well) but caught the bug again. I wanted to collect the Codexes top 50 cRPGs in physical form and just kept going with the 2nd collection. That collection was sold off to help pay for my daughter's college then Covid (lockdowns, boredom, etc.) happened and I got the itch to start this, my 3rd collection. :philosoraptor:

I've still got my Atari Adventure Box (along with some OG Sears Telegames stuff and a couple boxes of D&D/Star Frontiers with Playboys hidden in them) but its locked in a trunk we've lost the key for. I think Zork is in there too but I didn't play it much.

It's my dad's army trunk from Nam. No can do. Will eventually get a locksmith or something.

Sold my MtG collection in '96 to buy a '76 Impala to drive back east. You can imagine what that would be worth now. I'd rather not.

Oh well, I got it from gypping other people on trades when I really was an asshole. Poetic justice.

Don't feel bad. Sometimes I feel like MTG was like the heroin of our generation.

All the games I've played over the last 25-30 years (can't make up my mind if it sounds more depressing or impressive when you say it like that, a quarter century of gaming, holy shite), I've either sold back to game stores (for next to nothing/store credit), lost, threw out, left behind when moving, gave away, or god knows what else.

More recently, I've been gaming digitally exclusively. When someone like mindx2 posts those pics, it's very impressive of course, the nostalgia hit is real, but all in all, I think digital gaming suits me well. So much easier to keep track of, keep in good condition, etc. At least until Holy Gaben does something unexpected. But if and when that happens, well, nothing lasts forever anyway, even mindx2's boxes will be gone after a couple of thermonuclear wars.

Unfortunately not (yet) complete. Not shown are some minor variants (changed publisher logo or warnings etc.).

Never even owned an xbawks lol. But I do have a patched drive that can read the discs.

Also some Linux boxes and DVDs from Loki and LGP (sadly not many RPGs):

You couldn't have known back then how crazy it would become. An even semi-serious collection from the first years of mtg... yay. Even mine small(-ish), mostly casual, collection from late 2000s - mid 2010s is worth ~10k $ now.

Don't care much for using (Ex-)Twitter but feel free to pass the images along yourself.

So which of the Arx boxes is your favorite, and why?
I like the Russian Limited Edition published by Akella because of the unique cover artwork. No idea if that snake woman drawing is concept art from the game or something that was specifically made for the box - it's not in any of the bonus content or fan-site kit AFAIK but it doesn't really seem out of place with the other concept art sketches. Also this version was the hardest one to get, but mostly because DHL managed to lose the package for a couple of moths. The "box" itself is just a DVD case with a cardboard sleeve so somewhat less exciting and my copy only has a disc with no manual or other physical items - but those could be missing. It does include the bonus content from the Atari Limited Edition on the disc though: a strategy guide, art book and making of video. There exists also a jewel case version of the Akella Limited Edition that I'm still missing.

The German and US boxes are a bit fancier with both having a flap/page on the front that can be opened for more artwork/screenshots. You can't really see it in the picture but the original German box has a glossy finish over the character and logo (but not the rest) which is a nice touch - they didn't bother with that when printing new boxes with the updated USK 16 rating. The US box on the other hand includes a ~A5 poster of the city map - the one that is included as map.pdf in the digital distributions, but with less JPEG.

The two Taiwanese boxes (one has English text in-game, the other one Chinese) are the only full size boxes I could find (excluding bundles with other games). Sadly the additional space is just air/cardboard - no extra goodies here. AFAIK the Chinese translation (text only) is not sold digitally anywhere and neither is the Japanese one (text + voice) so it's nice to have legal copies of those. Getting non-EU/US versions is also always more exciting because it tends to be more involved than just pressing buy on eBay.

That is some grade A autism. My autism is more retarded - I buy games on GOG that I already own on Steam like I'm trying to balance a chemical equation.

Get best of both worlds. If I don't wanna spend money on the game themselves I would get the game digitally and then archive it somewhere. I have levels to it
CDS: I get some clean CDS, each has about 700MBs. They're cheap but write only, so I burn the important stuff, like Fallout and my fart samples.
Drives: I have some hard drives (I read SSDs are better for archiving, fact check me on this) that have more ephemeral information, like Fallout 2 and moan samples.
Online: Then I setup some google drives/mega.nz and other online directory sites to really cover my basis for important stuff. This stuff is expected to die but it acts as a last resort, in case my house burn down.
I keep backups upon backups. I read the writing on the wall on the future with the internet. And I hate 90% of modern media as well, which makes me further paranoid about this. In the future I would like to collaborate with my library and see if I can find a way to get them to archive books they have there digitally and let me donate my burned copied of media, just to keep Fallout archived in my city, so that future generations can play it (if they can run it on Windows 25)

Jesus, you Western European and American guys, I'm so jealous. It was all cracks on noname floppies in post-communist Europe... I had about 3-4 legal cassette games for my C64 and that's it. I would love to have a wall of originals with manuals and feelies but aren't gonna pay the price of a small car for that at today's "collector's prices" (for floppies that most likely don't even work anymore).
