It’s early in development but it’s a bit like Might and Magic or Morrowind. It’s like a post-futuristic dystopian setting. There is lots of lore. The landscapes are very immersive. I’ve only played the demo though which is outdated. I’m holding out a bit on purchase as we’ve all been burned on these promising early accesses before.

You should read the store page if you haven't.

Here's a scoop of what the game is meant to be.

1) Creatures.
Where my own art style shines. More details about my plans with them not available at this time.

2) Creatures swarming you, odd challenges, fighting through weirdly constructed areas.
Keep in mind this is not an ARPG. But you can be overwhelmed as they start to surround you.

3) Open world with quests to do in each area.
A few exist already handed out in the main town.
Most quests will be simple. Some are planned to be complex.
Note: A few areas will have a defunct status for lore reasons. But the game is rather big.

4) Joining and/or destroying factions. Letting them get their way or not.
This will officially be done per a MQ. This MQ will be linear until the very end. At which point you can then make choices based upon what you did up till that point.

I intend to do a lot more with the Chasing Coosger quest.

At some point you'll have to do something about the aliens/abominations of the game. I don't know if i'll give it it's own MQ or merge into another.

5) Explore, Kill, Loot, Buy/Sell, Die.
These exist already but aren't the point of the game. Not an ARPG.

I found an item called C-picks and a locked box, so I assume there's lockpicking. How do you lockpick in this game?

For bugs, saves no longer work at all. I also did the travel escort job, waited until the traveller was ready and clicked yes, but when I got to the location (Prospercanius), nothing happened. This isn't a bug but water doesn't restore thirst (but prison water does).

Excited for new creature models and quests.

You must put the C-picks in your active hand. Then right-click and pick "Interact". I should probably add a Use Lockpick option in place of interact in that situation.
Also looks like C-picks are pretty expensive for only being usable once. I'll look into adjusting the price or max uses.

When you get to the destination with the Travel/Escort Merchant you have to talk to the guy again to claim reward or continue the trip (if it's a round trip).
In some cases they will abandon the trip if poor time was made in getting there. Basically always talk to the guy to see what they have to say.

Yes water needs to restore thirst too. I'll fix that.

As for saves could you share your log.txt when it fails to load the save? Did you save with same version of the game you are loading with?

You should know you basically have to re-roll for each update to guarantee the game will work.
It's luck if you can load without the game shitting itself somewhere.

Re-rolling preserves lots of the basic character stuff. Just not your items or completed quests or the world state.

Come to think of it I should probably check it preserves your character portrait and description. Shit!

Anyway re-roll is necessary if the game updates because I can't predict the future. The claim that you can have perfect save compatibility is similar to the claim that nothing really interesting changes in the updates.
I also rather not shackle myself or toil in complicated save upgrade routines which could easily be coded wrong anyway.

Sometimes you can ignore re-roll but it's not recommended as a habit.
In reality you're better served starting fresh.

There are only 3 quests in the game, only the Find Coosger quest takes serious investment. You can use the achievement points gained regardless to recuperate your losses.

The save system also has its own issues. You'll find "a container was not found" spammed in your log.txt This is due to some non-determinism that has slipped in.
I want to blame Unity3D, but it might be my fault.

By tomorrow i'll have a new patch.

edit: All has been fixed.

I have returned to the game after some time and would like to enjoy it, but a lot of texts are unreadable due to overlapping. I don't see anything in settings to change the resolution or whatever.

I have the font set to 10, but the texts are overlapping everywhere still. My monitor resolution is 2560x1440 and this is how Redaxium looks on my pc:

How weird. That's the one I usually play with and took that screenshot with.

I'm not sure what this means. Your buttons look quite small by comparison. I also see you have black strips running down left and right.

edit: what's your monitor size in inches? and do you have any other modes enabled that might prevent proper stretching to your screen?

If I had to guess you have some kind of letterbox mode enable or cinematic mode enabled or whatever they call it when black strips are shown.

Your gpu software or os might have something to configure it.

Have you ever run a game at 2560x1440 resolution and not had those black stripes?

I just ran Deus ex while having Radexium on in the background and when I returned the resolution fixed itself permanently.

Solution: Run og Deus Ex and Redaxium at once

Cross-pollination of screen resolution I guess.

I was going to say that mouse cursor looks huge for 2560x1440.

I thank you for guiding me through these unforeseen events that have led to an unexpected and miraculous fix. It was no mere accident that I ran Deus Ex. The term deus ex machina really does suit this situation very well. What a book example of synchronicity indeed!

Men. I regretfully must say things aren't looking too good.

I suspect my hardware might be breaking down. It's getting harder and harder to have reliable Linux builds.

That or Windows is purposely sabotaging the linux builds. Are the files just getting too big now? Idk.

I suspect the windows builds break too, but have such a superior performance profile that they hide it better.

I can't even with this shit anymore. Right as i'm about to do the most important stuff.

It seems no matter what game engine you choose it or something else will eventually beat you down to its level.
It is then you are going to find out what deal with the devil you really made.

Shall I move your game in the Upcoming RPGs thread to the "cancelled" section?

No. I can say optimistically maybe something like Halloween is still doable. (Not a promise)

I've had Linux support since Day 1 of EA. According to steam only a couple players are linux users though. It's just incredibly disappointing and taxing to see it break so often.

Remember I don't know what the cause is. It could be the drive the Unity Editor is installed on.

I have tons of backups of the game. Both code and the entire unity project folders.
If Windows shits itself or the hardware it runs on does, it's not the end.

Remember what the game really was about in the beginning was this:

I intend to get around to everything eventually. Quitting is not an option.

No way will I let this die.

A very interesting playthrough BING XI LAO!

This convinced me that 2D rpg crowd have very different intuitions about how to interact with the game.

BING XI LAO is trying to do something very difficult.
He's taking on the learning curve and trying to give first impressions at the exact same time.

Game still has accessbility issues it seems.

In other news i've managed to make time and enjoy an MMO.
For fun, but also research purposes since my game is kind of massive and filling it up will not be trivial.

Don't worry though i've already gotten tired of the MMO. Not bored though, just tired.
But the reason i'm tired of it is special. (took 2 days, i've played it in the past, years back)

This MMO is strange because the stuff like story or places to explore far exceeds the character progression.
Even the monster variety is excessive. You won't spot blatant reuses of an asset often.

The MMO is a total rarity. Usually mmos are all about endless meaningless powerups, ranks, and busywork.
(almost always easier for the developer in terms of cost to implement versus time to for player to grind out)

This MMO basically stops being meaningful character progression-wise when you reach the max level.
At that point everyone can be everyone. Including your npc allies to a lesser degree.

The issue is compounded by an expansion that lets you quickly powerlevel to max level and even covers for you being under-leveled until you reach the max level.
You only need to reach half of max level before your troubles of leveling are all solved.
The game also has very few character levels, so you're not exactly achieving brilliant unexpected distributions of stat points.

The game always intended for the max level to not be a big deal for much of the content.
It got its wish but also really didn't.
Max level only means something if you haven't reached it, but after you do you can do anything. Genius balance or maybe confused designed?
Back in the day with a larger community and when the game still had development, you could probably easily look past any fault and focus on enjoying what's there. This is probably true for any game you enjoy.
But if you've played the game before, you have to cope with the fact that you know what's there.
Or agonize little by little of not being surprised when you wanted to be.
This has lead me to a crisis, where I find doing anything tiring.

Here's how:
-It's a great RPG but completely oriented towards combat as how you customize.
(The missions/quests do offer complexity in how you fight but it's more of a spectacle)
-Any build you make someone else could do by simply being your class. In time you can always acquire their exact same shit.
-Being that builds are combat only, they don't customize anything else about you.
This follows from the fact the game is completely combat oriented.
(Credit where credit is due the game will incorporate fair amount of story to tastefully present things like skills)

The true customization you can have is the many titles you can earn.
This is what the modern gamer would refer to as Achievements, just harder to achieve.
But these titles almost all mean nothing. Literally they're just titles.
They imply the effort of what it took to achieve them, nothing more.
It's an rpg but the most customizing thing about it that could set you apart offers you nothing.

What tires me out about this game should be in focus now.

Max level is where all the good shit happens, but it's also where character progression stops.
Half Max level is enough to reach Max level that same day. In fact you could reach Max level in one day from scratch if you aren't a total noob.
This is with an inactive player base.

Being an MMO PvP also exists. But the official PvP mode literally puts you at max level instantly.
Plus you get to pick any elite items you wish, no effort required.
I think it was that way since release. There are low leveled PvP arenas, but no one uses them.

Any exceptions to what i've said are very very few. The best exceptions of which are story or environment limited. Or occur at max level where most everything is already doable.

Summary:
-If you wanted to kneecap your game and playerbase so people only play for the titles, this game does it perfectly.
The story and explorable areas are still incredible.
-The game is a true snowflake for its great execution on story and such. But lacking in its ability to let me be a snowflake.
-Putting aside the dev's choice to let you powerlevel yourself with official content:
The game is a masterpiece even by single player standards.
-Games of this size cannot be truly bettered, and that's a problem. A problem so incomprehensible I believe it requires
an incomprehensible solution.
-Imagine a game that's enormous and filled with rich amounts of content, but its customization and progression cancel each other out.
I can imagine such a game, and it tires me the fuck out.

I've decided i'll be adding character classes to the game.

At the moment you can pick from three species, but otherwise all have the same access to same abilities.
The vasty majority of abilities are randomized and scaled to higher or lower level which is kind of boring.

I guess I should explain how things are at the present.

Your skills all belong to what I call a Skill Library.

There are finite number of skills which each fall into one of three categories.

-Attack
-Defense
-Roleplay (RP)

In reverse order,
RP is just things like Steal, or Explosives, or Analyze. These are not procedurally made.

Defense skills are just temporary buffs. These are procedurally made.

Attack skills focused on doing damage of one element type or another. These are procedurally made.

Melee attacks exist too which is just your unarmed ability. These are not procedurally made.

Weapon attacks are like Melee but you hit with the added weapon damage. These are not procedurally made.

While these selections are not awful they are not great either. When you create a new character you can still reset & customize your stats how you want,
Thus your initial racial bonus can be reworked.

If you neglect to pick an affinity at the start, you can still do so later.

Anyone who has bothered to play the game long enough to level up a bunch of times will notice the skill selection progression is always more of the same except stronger with varying cost.

What makes me think character classes is a good idea is to add more deliberate playstyles. Particularly combat-wise.
The more ways for the player to do combat the more ways the enemies could become varied too.

I've been playing an MMORPG that focuses on combat and horizontal progression. I've become something of a fan.
Probably only because it was made at a time where some depth was still necessary.
I can definitely feel the effects of this MMO having too little to do, yet all the freedom you could imagine to do it.
Unforgivable torture, esp. since i'm a developer and no real developer wants to make a game or play one that they'd only play casually.

There is a kind of elegance you can achieve when your game has a lot less depth and instead focuses on the apparent depth of the window dressing.
So many wonderful places to do things, yet if only I had things to do.

But are "things to do" a horizontal progression problem or a vertical progression problem?

For vertical progression:
Picking a character class is the first thing or should be the first thing of consequence.
Picking a character class's profession is the second, but I don't see time to personally add such things.

The gameplay that should follow must be fun. What is fun?
Fun is mystery in new content and mystery in strategies to exploit what's *new*.

But once you've completed the fun stuff, that's it. No replayability. A seemingly unsolvable problem.

If nothing the player does lasts, then maybe nothing has really progressed.

Everyone knows the cruel fate of a pizza that's perfect except it's missing a topping.
It's an unspeakable emptiness inside that never wanes.

IMO itz time games git gud. Starting with mine.
