The combat gets more complex as you learn ranks in weapon skill. It's pretty enjoyable; I for one liked it more than Dks2, per example. Also, considering that's one small island, it has enough variety (play at least until you get to visit Harbor Town or the Monastery, which are pretty well designed).

How so? Most of what I experience early on was waiting for an attack, dodging to the side, and then counter attacking.

It's more than enough, after all the game is not combat-focused (at leasy first 2 chapters). It's a proper rpg with quests, factions and all. But since you don't find the charm, I guess there's no point in forcing yourself to go on.

To say you didn't like Risen 1 is to say you didn't like Gothic 1 and 2. Not that it is as good as those games but the design is almost a carbon copy and the quality is not that degraded.

Tried playing Gothic 1 and the controls were pretty terrible. I did a few quests in the Old Town but got tired of the controls and eventually gave up. Didn't play Gothic 2 nor 3 because they are a direct sequel AFAIK and didn't want to ruin the experience.

The controls in G1 are basically Mouse 1+WASD in combat; M1+W is also used for interactions, talk with NPC, open chest etc. Also works pretty well with a gamepad if you use some remapping software.
I wonder how you people manage to tie your shoelaces.

I think the controls aren't bad, it's just the way the character behaves and moves is kinda retarded and wooden and takes getting used but in the end it helps increase the difficulty by providing a learning curve and an option to master the system and it also restricts your opponents in the same way. I think the system is actually amazing in what it does in the game aside from being a bit hard to get into.

Mouse 1 + WSAD is the alternative control scheme. The default one is keyboard only that is very much like the one in the PC version of the original Tomb Raider. I actually prefer to play Gothic 1/2 with the keyboard only control scheme, mainly because you can't choose dialogue responses with the mouse and have to move your hand from the mouse to the keyboard during dialogues when using the alternative control scheme, which I find annoying.

Controls are fine. I fucking wince every time I see someone on the Codex complain about them... and it happens far more than it should.

It is hard to ruin an experience more than not experiencing it at all.

If controls in G1 are such a PITA for you, ignore that game and go straight for G2+NoTR (which has a different control scheme, although you can go with G1 controls too). Continuity is not a big deal in these games anyway, there are only a few nods to the original in G2, the game stands just fine on its own.

You can just press S and W during dialogue to choose an option and confirm it with left mouseclick. It's a very good system imo, because it's more accurate than trying to hover over an option with a mouse.

I don't remember G1 but in G2 I use arrows+mouse and for dialogues arrows or mousewheel and it works perfectly. I never thought about it but you're right, it's much quicker than trying to hit the dialogue option with the cursor.

Absolutely. It's a non standard control scheme but it makes perfect sense once you are used to it. I remember playing it on a laptop and not having to use the mouse much was a boon in itself.

Rectify that ASAP, man.

But they don't have quest compasses! :troll:
Neither does Dark Souls you faggot.

But New Vegas does.

Can I play Gothic 1/2 legally without Steam?

EDIT: Looks like a yes ala GoG. I'll get to them sometime.

I want to punch the commentator in the face repeatedly.

I guess I will end up buying this, but not day 1 like I did with the other two games.

Is there anything else coming out during summer? I gave up on the insipid DaS II and have doubts Bamco gets it's shit together for a GFWL-free DaS replay. I demoed Wasteland 2 recently and I don't like it one bit. I think Risen 3 will be privileged enough to get Day Month 1 purchased.

I want to punch the commentator in the face repeatedly.

Why does youtube not offer a multi-channel audio feature? Stupid commentary should be switchable.
