Reminder that Drakortha became so enamored by Fallout 3 that his dream job became to work at Bethesda.
I was enamored by Fallout 1 and then STALKER. Fallout 3 was a joke. My DC Chronicles movie was made with Fallout 3 because I was familiar with the engine previously in Morrowind & Oblivion. But it was largely inspired by my time playing STALKER (even borrowed sound effects and music from SoC). I was playing both games at the time and SoC made an impression on me.

Playing SoC evoked a lot of the same feelings I got from playing Fallout 1 back in 1999. It felt mature. Had a grid inventory with guns and drugs. Minimal handholding, and a world that wanted to kill you the moment you walked out of an underground bunker. In the case of SoC that was leaving the bunker in Cordon.

UE5 is shite.
What I don't understand is aren't studios choosing UE5 because it's supposedly so well documented and easier to work with? How do you not turn that into an asset but rather still release a game in this state?

Because it has nice candy at the end of the road in form of superb graphics and promise of lowering workhours per game with stuff like lumen that promises no spending hours on scenes to properly lights them or nanite which promises no LOD work and infinite view into distance etc.

Thing is that UE5.0 was a scam. Almost all of it's new features didn't work correctly or had major problems. Like in case of Stalker2 and their use of version that does not use Nanite on vegetation because at the time EU5.0 didn't support that. That's why there are vegetation popins.

I wanted to try it out on Gamepass, but after reading reviews instead I downloaded it somewhere else.
Haven't played much of it, but it runs smooth for me in 4k on a 7800x3d, RTX 4090 with 32 GB RAM installed on a NVMe.
I will probably play more this evening and I am curious if a lot of the bugs I have seen happen because of hardware issues.

unreal every release runs like shit, stutters and crashes. Almost all unreal engine games lack in immersion and AI but I understand this is secondary to the graphics for typical gamer.

^ above clown, i have the most expensive consumer hardware on the market game runs fine

you're missing one major factor - modern developers
incompetent, messy and happy if their duct-taped pile of code runs at all, optimisation be damned
in short - complete opposite of old school developers

i dont get why people keep treating anomaly as some kind of benchmark for what stalker should be. sure it looks nice and is mechanically impressive but otherwise it's literally just endless fedex quests

That and the carry over invisible walls from the older titles. Otherwise yes, the best Stalker is not made by GSC.

What happened to the engrish from the three older games? Half the charm was having the "ruskies" scrape my ear with their accents. Shame. Get out of here stalker...

What Stalker should be? A Far Cry game where main character talks to himself?

I enjoy anomaly for what it is, a highly customizable freeplay total conversion. Stalker's campaign is good enough to experience it once... maybe twice for the story. But i prefer it's gameplay and atmosphere with additions from Anomaly.

when you play something like NLC or Goldsphere, there's no going back to Anomaly, especially when you realize that Anomaly is just endless rinse and repeat fedex quests
