IIRC it started as a mod, then went into state of commercial product.
Wonder why it's not on Steam.

Sorry for not posting the name of the mod. Yes, it's Survive in Catacombs re-release. Pretty flawed total conversion, but still worth playing if you like They Hunger or undead levels from first Thief (author even used bunch of graphics and sounds from TDP, including the zombie moans).

Faery Tale Adventure II: Halls of the Dead (The Dreamer's Guild, 1997). As Sariloth, Lord of Order, threatens the land of Farr, the three spirit steeds summon the three brothers from Holm, before being turned into a stone statue.

jHCkayh.jpg

Halls of the Dead features full voice-acting (which often cannot be skipped), a mouse-drive interface (various options can be clicked on and then dropped over an NPC), and more extensive equipment for the brothers.

Although the rest of the game is real-time, combat is turn-based and has some tactical elements.

The brothers clear out the goblin village near the hamlet of Padavis.

A nearby cavern contains many more goblins.

Castle Jovanc is filled with undead, including the playful ghost of a young boy, whose spirit is put to rest after the brothers find and return his teddy bear.

Magic is divided into six colors, each with a separate pool of mana, and includes offensive, defensive, support, and utility spells.

The frozen wastes of Mons contain howling winds that slowly damage the brothers with intense cold.

Returning to Bilton, the brothers purchase snow parkas to protect against the cold.

A grateful captain transports the brothers to the partially-submerged Tamnath Ruins.

Lowering the waters reveals another Tapstone, and unleashes a horde of snakes and serpent-men.

Emboldened by success, the brothers return to Roska's citadel, and best him in battle.

The first of the golden apples needed to revive the spirit steeds from their petrified state. About half a dozen artifacts to go...

Halls of the Dead must be the best unfinished game I've ever played. The bankruptcy of The Dreamer's Guild meant that large chunks of the game were excised in order to rush it out before the company completely went under. And the mouse-driven controls, combined with poor pathfinding, makes movement frequently infuriating. Still loads of fun.

Front Mission 5

Some missions are fantastic, easily the best in series:

And lighthearted military tone is nice:

But story is beyond retarded, FM3 is on a Planescape Torment level of writing, compared to this POS. Also: waifu boss?

Once, this was ultra-generic "crystal dragon statue fantasy". Today, we can at least be happy it isn't filled with things smeared with dirt and grim darkness and shit.
Nice pixel art, impressive use of lighting.
On a related note, one thing I really liked in old, pixel art graphics or graphics with pixel art compnents, was how gems, potions and other shinies were drawn. That's one of the areas where modern 3D graphics still hasn't fully caught up.
