Defender of the Crown, Cineware, 1986. There were three notable Amiga-original games completed in 1986, and I've already covered Faery Tale Adventure and Arcticfox.

This gorgeous illustration of England is displayed at the beginning of each turn, marking the addition of monthly income to your treasury.

Although there are three rudimentary minigames, the fundamental portion of Defender of the Crown is a drastically simplified strategy game in which you play one of six factions vying for the crown of England following the death of the king. Each side is destroyed if its home castle is captured.

Fpjp3k3.png

Laying siege to a castle yields one of two images, depending on whether the castle is Norman or Saxon.

p9jCyO3.png

One of the three minigames consists of firing stones from a catapult to create a breach in the castle walls.

Damnable Norman rogues! :argh:

Another minigame consists of raiding castles in search of loot, starting with a swordfight in the castle courtyard, followed by another swordfight inside.

There are occasional opportunities to rescue a Saxon lady who has been kidnapped by the Normans, which results in the same minigame as raiding castles, but with a different prize for success.

Unifying the realm through the strategy part of the game delivers victory.

Defender of the Crown contains beautiful graphics but little gameplay, due in part to being written in only six weeks. Ironically, it would nonetheless remain Cineware's most successful game, not only ported to many other systems but also with a revised version released for the Amiga CD in 1993 under the name Defender of the Crown II.

I love the women in this game.

The translation on The Witcher is fucked, I knew it already just from noticing how long some dialogues are yet how short the subtitles are. I used Google Translate to see what was I missing:

English:

- Can you make a potion to cure lycanthropy?
- Hmmm. Never tried.
- The potion's for a wereworlf. The beloved of a young woman...
- Usually, I'd refuse, but I owe you. Let's see... ingredients, check; equipment, check. Come back later, okay?

Polish:

- Could you prepare a potion that would eliminate the curse of lycanthropy?
- I do not know myself, I have never tried. I once made a magical drink for a lady turned into a falcon, but I do not know if it worked.
- I need a werewolf potion. Beloved of a young woman... what I will be divorcing, you know how it happens... (Potrzebuję eliksiru dla wilkołaka. Ukochany pewnej młodej kobiety... co się będę rozwodził, sam wiesz, jak to bywa...)
- Normally, I would refuse, but I owe you so much ... It takes time to convert the proportions of ingredients. Fortunately, I have the equipment and components in place. Come in later, consent? (Normalnie odmówiłbym, ale tyle ci zawdzięczam... Chwilę potrwa przeliczanie proporcji składników. Na szczęście aparaturę i komponenty mam na miejscu. Wpadnij później, zgoda?)

Left the Polish voiceovers because some parts of those two sentences don't make much sense. But overall, the Polish subtitles are much more informative. And personally, even if the English subs are concise enough at times, I'd prefer if they didn't leave me waiting for the Polish VA to finish its sentences.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I was looking for something similar in feel to Drakan last sunday and gave this one a try but uninstalled after 15 min due to bland gameplay. Does it get better?

It's a solid game, polished, with nice graphics and nicely rendered heroine but it's not something that I would consider replaying. I share your sentiment about Venetica, it's a shame that there is no sequel.

The Decline
The title of the game is Blades of Time. I remember acquiring it in some random bundle.

I think no game (Amiga version, of course) has impressed me so much with its audiovisuals. I still remember the music 30 years after.

Too bad the action elemens, especially the jousting, were so frustrating, and the strategy part rather too easy.

Metroid Prime

And culling issues... :negative:
Of course, for optimization purposes the game won't render objects that you aren't supposed to see. And since it doesn't really support a 16:9 mode, you can sometimes see things disappear near the edges of the screen. This can be fixed with AR codes, but I don't know whether they just widen the angle or deactivate it completely. The latter would explain the frequent slowdowns, crashes and other graphical bugs I got when I tried them. No, thanks.
Luckily, it's only a couple of rooms where it's as bad as above. For the most part I didn't even notice, unless I was looking for it. Otherwise the game runs just as smooth as on the original GC, with the added bonus of shorter load times. I never had to wait for doors to open.

The numerous missile expansions are actually useful, thanks to the powerful beam combos. This one will burn your missile supply in seconds.

Little details:

Hot Plasma Beam.

Cold Ice Beam.

GM8_E01_16.png

And the X-Ray visor shows Samus's hand inside the cannon, making the corresponding gesture.

GM8_E01_17.png

I'd say the 3 most challenging parts on Hard are
- the gauntlet in the Phazon Mines (long stretch without a save station)
- the Omega Pirate
- and this one

GM8_E01_18.png

GM8_E01_19.png

A good reason to get the Ice Beam combo.
Also, culling in the lower left corner.

GM8_E01_20.png

The biggest challenge in this fight is to stay awake.
GM8_E01_21.png

:salute:

I would have continued with Echoes, but that game runs like ass even in 4:3.

I remember how I beat the first three MK games on the PC with every single character in every game, including the secret characters in each one (Smoke's fatality in MK3 is lulzy).

I haven't touched a single MK game since.

A lot of trial and error involved, but I'm getting the hang of it. Also, laser rifles rock.

Fuck escort missions, worst crap there is:

Fuck Yukon. This is definitely one of the worse levels I have ever played. Ever.

Atlantic Accelerator
Atlantic what? :smug:

Impossible if you don't figure the gimmick, pathetically easy if you do. The briefing tells you that there are spotters so the gimmick is to only babysit agent 3 and make sure you kill the white dots on the map because they're the spotters. You do that, no airstrikes. Agent 3 I decked in full miniguns, everybody else 6 lasers with 2 miniguns for backup. Took me 3 tries. Got nuked on the first 2, figured it out and spammed the minigun on the side of the building they come from.

Uruguay is difficult when it comes to numbers of agents, but Yukon is on my top 3 list of the most horrifying experiences ever, because it's an escort mission.
There can be nothing harder than Yukon. Nothing. Not because the numbers are overwhelming, not because you get airstrikes rained on you not because jack shit. Just because I have to fucking babysit a fucking retarded AI that dies in 2 hits in a mission where everybody and their grandmother has rocket launchers and miniguns. In a game where the pathfinding is utterly shit. In a game where enemies come from behind buildings that I can't fucking see past. Until this mission I thought all these limitations were fun and presented an unusual challenge. Not anymore. Fuck Yukon and fuck whoever designed it. And again fuck escort missions, not just in Syndicate but in every fucking game from then until now. Escort missions are shit and should never be in any fucking game unless you give me control of the AI.:argh:

Also, yo Ninja Destroyer, glad you finally got rid of the tags, brother.

Considering Yukon is the opening mission of the Data Disk (and I can't remember having any trouble with it) this comes out of left field.

And yes, I agree with escort missions being shit all-round. In fact, someone explained this in better imagery than I ever could:

You sure you're not thinking of Alaska where you have to rescue the guy attacked by an APC because that's the "first" mission?

You're right, my bad. Still, Yukon doesn't sit in my memory as badly as the Accelerator and that S-American escort mission.

And if you think this is all horrible, there's a game called Syndicate Wars that wants a word with you.

Oh man, this game is so fucking good. Retrying a couple of things you realize just how non-linear it can be. Aside from ending changing C&C there seem to be dozens of different stuff that can happen depending on how and when you do certain things. Who will you kill, who will you put on the machine (will he be a human or a replicant, sometimes it seems this is random and sometimes it seems your actions can influence the outcome). Are YOU a human or a replicant - your choices will mainly decide it, or at least how you want yourself and the others to think of you. Who and when you'll encounter them also has some randomness, as it seems npcs have their own schedules. There's a lot of extra info that can be obtained if you do certain things.

In my playthrough by the endgame I could choose between two main endings (and two sub-endings), and apparently there are at least 3 more main endings, with various more sub-endings.

Also, this game is fucking gorgeous.

Nobody Home. Apparently depending on your actions there's a chance to meet both Rachel and Tyrell as NPCs in the game.
